Theater Arts ABOVE LEFT: Mr. Kenneth Gilliam. Mr. Gilliam, who is presently working on his doctorate in comparative arts from Ohio University, is an assistant professor in theater arts. After he graduated from Henderson State College he furthered his studies at the Univer- sity of Arkansas where he received his Master's de- gree. He joined the Hendrix College faculty in 1967. Mr. Gilliam directed the 1971-72 season's first major production, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail. BELOW LEFT: Mrs. Ella Myrl Shanks. Mrs. Shanks came here in 1952, having completed her graduate work in theater and drama at Northwestern in 1951. In 1955 she became Dean of Women, a position she held for four years. Her specialty is direction. The season's second major production, Moliere's School For Wires, was directed by Mrs. Shanks and presented during the Week of GTAHAH activities.

Qv 8 Art RIGHT: Mr. William H. Hawes. Mr. Hawes, assistant professor of art, joined the Hendrix College faculty in 1967. He did his undergraduate work at the Univer- sity of Wichita, where he graduated with a B.F.A. He went to the University of Arkansas for his graduate work and there was awarded his Master's degree in Fine Arts. Mr. Don Marr Knot picturedb, is associate professor of art and came to Hendrix in 1959. He received his M.F.A. in 1958 from the University of Arkansas. He received his Bachelor's from the University of Ten- nessee at Knoxville. He presently serves as head of the department. 5' ABOVE: Dr. Matt L. Ellis. Dr. Ellis, emeritus profes- sor of philosophy, graduated as valedictorian from Henderson-Brown College with a Bachelor's degree, obtained his Master's and Doctor's degrees from Yale, and received a LL.D. Degree from Hendrix. Dr. Ellis was professor of philosophy at Hendrix from 1935- 1941, and served as President of Hendrix from 1945 until 1958. In February he announced his permanent retirement from the faculty of Hendrix College. RIGHT: Dr. Robert G. Shoemaker. Dr. Shoemaker joined the Hendrix College staff in 1966, and the fol- lowing year he was awarded his doctorate in philoso- phy from the University of Texas. He received a Woo- drow Wilson Fellowship in 1963-1964 for his graduate work, which included studies in French and German, He presently serves as head of the department of philosophy. Philosoph -Q
