The rea- son is simple. HHS is UP, UP 8t AWAY in everything we do. We pride ourselves on our Touch of Class and, with enthusiasm, we have achieved recognition. As Mr. Wilson welcomed us back, we realized summer was over! Then off to classes, we were issued books, and encouraged to learn as much as possible in order to develop our own personality. The faculty worked hard to push drifters back in the right direction. We knew the year would surprise us as we continued to rise in our Balloon of Suc- cess. This year we continued our journey to the top, some- times encountering rough winds now and then but al- ways relying on each other to put ourselves back on course. Excitement and an- ticipation filled the hearts of the students at HHS for the new year. Seniors enjoyed Freshmen Initiation, which was fun while it lasted! The first day of school was unique - the Seniors pa- raded to school with bal- loons, posters, and horns, ready for a big year. Our Home Town 4 ,hmumf tg! la-5' u- g Hendersonville is the City of Four Seasons and the home of the HHS Bearcats. A southern town, nestled in the mountains, it exhibits a down-home friendliness for those who live here. A hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains is just an hour's drive away. Many lakes, rivers and streams in the surrounding area offer excellent fishing, sailing and other water sports. With the cool weather, sweaters and letter jackets make their way into the halls of HHS. Ski season is antici- pated by the many local ski buffs, while others can only wish for spring, warm weath- er and summer vacation. Small town activities are the pastimes of many of the students at HHS. Cruising Main Street and checking out the scene at McDonald's are a must on a Saturday night. Spring, summer, fall and win- ter, the Bearcats make their imprint on the City of Four Seasons. City of Four Seasonsf5 Painted faces anxiously await the start of the 1982 Apple Festival Pa- rade. The Student Council worked hard again this year to provide the Bearcats with a fun-filled event. Juice and seeds flew through the air as people bit into the refreshing melon. Spirit climbed throughout the year. The Sophomore and Junior classes dominat- ed in showing the most spirit. All classes made their pres- ence known at Pep Rallies and ballgames. Bearcat fans came out with Red 81 White, bandanas and enthusiasm to cheer the Cats on to victory. The Bearcat team demon- strated unity by raising their arms during the fourth quar- ter of each game. Coach Brintnall had originally began this to encourage the team to keep playing their hardest. At each game, the symbol of the raised arrn became more evi- dent and referred to as fourth quarter. The fans, led by the cheerleaders, picked up on fourth quar- ter and waved the red and white bandanas high in the air. One highlight of showing spirit was the cropping of hair by Bearcat men. Pep Board continued to boost the 'Cats by selling spirit towels. Throughout the year, the Bearcats together rose to the occasion. The spirit began on Monday with Let's Get Physical Day'l. Students wore sweatshirts, head- bands, leg warmers and oth- er physical attire. The Freshmen had the highest class participation that day. Tuesday was bandana day. The bandanas, any color, could be worn around head, neck or thigh. The winning class was the Freshmen. For the last week, thirteen beau- tiful girls lboysl had been se- lected for Powderpuff Beau- ties. Pennies were placed in the jars by the students. The girls with the most pennies won. Tuesday night was the Annual Powderpuff Game. Wednesday was a formal dress up day. lnductions into the Valentine Chapter of the National Honor Society were held during second period. Fied and White Day and Hall Decorating contest were scheduled for Thursday. This event was won by the Soph- omore class. Students had Friday off from school, but not from spirit or many other activi- ties. The Keywanettes held a Halloween Stew for the teachers, and the Student Council was decorating for the Homecoming Dance. A field decorating contest was held. All banners, made of a wind resistant material, were to be up by the beginning of the football game that night against Madison. Each class was given a designated area of the fence. The Seniors won with their banner saying, t'Cats are on the Prowl. 250 tickets had to be sold in order for the students to have a Homecoming Dance. The task was accomplished, and the dance was held Sat- urday Night, October 30. The theme was That Old Black Magic. Spirit soared in all the activities and were en- joyed by all. Bearcats joined together in these activities. Sometimes competition was rough but the 'Cats always rose to the occasion. Remember what it was like to be new around here? The place seemed a little bigger then, and though we never admitted it, a whole lot scar- ier. For a while we wondered how we were going to fit into this strange, super-sophisti- cated world, but now we wonder what we were wor- ried about. What an assortment of un- forgettable characters we met here. There were class- mates we liked from the start, and those who took a little getting used to. There were teachers we enjoyed, and teachers we survived. And of course there were up- per class celebrities - like the Southern Men of '8O and the Buns - who awed us with their style, Naturally, being the lower class innocents, we were hazed. For a week we were rushed from lunch to perform K. W X-515 on the sundial or stopped in the halls to carry just a few books g and after that, we were basically ignored. There was always the problem of getting there . Some of us were lucky enough to hitch a ride with a driving friend, but we usually had to stay at home. With the advance of the Sophomore year came the Driver's Li- cense, our key to the world. As Sophomores we shed the image of shy children. As a class we took on the ways of an unleashed hurricane, our SPlFilT striking violently and at random. No one will forget the vicious battle for the Croft Cup. The hours spent around HHS taught us that school was more than ballgames and homework. The third year arrived, and we remained determined to keep up the furious pace we had set the year before. We soon found out, though, how busy the Junior year is. We scrupulously saved our lunch money to provide for the 1982 Junior-Senior Prom and prepared ourselves to grab a few flowers from unsu- specting neighbors' yards. With the coming of spring, '82, we realized our days as underclassmen at HHS were numbered, and we thought desperately of ways to leave some sort of legacy behind. And then . . . Finally, after surviving three years as underclass- men, years of adapting to high school life and learning how to make the most of it, we became SENIORS! In au- tumn, 1979, we entered HHS for better or for worse, and we remained close-knit and kept our spirit, with only oc- casional relapses, right up until May, 1983. Of course no senior could deny getting a little bit slack or could resist visiting colleges , seeking off-campus nutrients or in- venting plans to beat the new skip once-get suspended rule. After all, we deserved some privileges feven if we had to invent them our- selvesl. If we could handle T.E.'s English Class, Frank- lin's Physics class or Jack- sori's Calculus class, we could surely cope with a few privileges. This was our year - SAT's, Senior steps, marching in, early dismissal, those Friday lunches on the road, and the Senior Play all included, and when it came down to the wire, most of us had a good time. The years spent at HHS provided us with valuable experiences. We learned many things here, some useful . . . others that don't matter at all. But as graduation approaches and the sheltered life of HHS draws to a close, all these things seem to lose their im- portance and thoughts turn toward the future. We begin to think about where we are going with our lives. Priorities are arranged, values decided upon, and experience gained, giving birth to the maturity necessary for the world beyond HHS. The last few weeks will be filled with hard thinking and hard party- ing with old friends. Each class likes to think of having left its mark on HHS, but as we look back and re- member autumns when all the excitement in the world flashed between two goal-posts, winters warm with the glow of holiday spir- its, springtimes that dazzled us with the promise of free- dom, long, lazy summer va- cations . . . we look back and remember . . . the people, friends who stuck it out and those who faded into only a memory, best buddies, old flames . . . we look back and remember ... various courses, teachers, ball games, dances, parties and all the other happenings that made our four years of high school. We will realize that it was HHS that left its mark on us forever, for better or for worse. Those seniors who have proven themselves outstanding throughout their high school careers are chosen to become members of the Who's Who in American High School Stu- dents, a very distinguished honor. They are selected on the basis of service to the school, whether through academics, arts, sports, or leadership. A committee of faculty members nominates note-worthy seniors, takes the list of nominees to a full faculty meeting, and holds a discussion. The faculty then votes on a small group of twelve-year students to re- ceive this honor. 50fWho's Who WHO'S WHO TDavid Kitts, Patty McCarthy, Thane Gash. Terry Jamison, Tong Kok Tang iEmiIy Georgl. For the Class of '84 the Ju- nior year seemed to be the busiest yet. In addition to the numerous traditional respon- sibilities put upon their shoul- ders, the Junior Class had dedicated many extra hours to the school. Though this was the third year this group had attended our school, the class of '84 never stood out before like it did this year. After getting over the plea- sure of finally being upper- classmen and catching their breath at the realization that their Senior year would soon be upon them, the Juniors buckled down to Moby Dick, the last 500 Vocabulary words, that feared research paper, and the grand finale, the Junior-Senior. Through all of these new challenges and privileges the Juniors were growing and changing. With each new experience, they became closer to their final challenge, their senior year. But until then, they were ready to prove that they were much more than a spirited group of Bearcats, they were the Class of '84. X' SR? 3 sig NS - Q ? as ' Q 'Q' X QR J '-, i K , 1 ' :vi 1 , . The word Sophomore seems to imply sophisticated mo- ron , a contradiction. Yet if we look at the term a little closer, we could infer that it suggests the transition into maturity. Though most of us are not fully aware of it, we do quite a bit of growing up in this year. At first glance, the Sopho- more year appears rather un- eventful. After all, what can we do except anticipate get- ting our driver's licenses? But once we delve into our second year at HHS, we find that this assumption is incor- rect. The flurry of activities can overwhelm us! The 1982-83 Sophomore Class seemed to be involved in ev- erything. Their unending, powerful SPIRIT showed in their participation in various organizations, clubs, and sports. From the poster-filled 2nd floor hall to the vicious struggle for the Croft Cup, the Sophomores put their all into everything they did this year, continuing the pride they had the year before. With added responsibility fend a weekly addition of for- ty words to their vocabular- iesy the Class of '85 has prov- en to be true Bearcats. V M arva Brown NNHATKSAF RESHMAN? At first it seems that the people at HHS are all lumped into one category: students. But viewed at closer range it becomes evident that far dif- ferent classes exist. The top- ranking three are easily dis- tinguished, but the Freshmen are the easiest to Spot. The Freshmen appeared lost at first - usually when looking for the fourth floor pool - but actually they were amazed. They began their perilous journey through high school life with much anticipation and enthu- siasm. They were there at the ballgames yelling their brains out, they also sat in the bleachers and looked for rides to go out afterward. They could always stay home and read Romeo and Juliet or do their geometry homework, some practiced ,WW 1,,g a:f, ,.. .e1'j ',:::' u,f - - i2 .fz5 ff- 1 V,ff fi' X31 f f 7' , f.,,R'!g,' JE 'W' 15152535 12 ' , Y Qgfjp f' fjgyi a mim e ' 3 V'i g. , . 4.13 fewer ,- a t . ,F ,tw + -7- v , 1 fig . ,M .W V., . . ,,f-,, ., . , ... if !:E,, 4. 5, 4 3, ,fr A . it 9? f r wr!! f FZV f M '-lf' f ya as ,W V .-44. r 'M 9 f 5 if ff -, 'J wwe. , ., ,V A .Q ,3r.... ,wa rf ffl ,, I t V if E, 4' f their instruments faithfullyg others worked out in the gym, preparing for the game, match, or race. Most had a good time. They soon learned that high school means hard work, whether they did their homework or thought up excuses for not doing it. The class of '86 was fortu- nate in that they received very little hazing, although an unlucky few were command- ed to perform embarrassing stunts before the hands off rule was established. All in all it was nice to have the freshmen around. They brought a new and fresh feel- ing to the school. And even though they didn't know the words to The Red and White they soon learned them, both forward and backward. Deskwork is only a part of Coach Par- due's daily routine. With his red towel on his shoulder, Coach calls instructions to the team. The 1982-83 Laureate is dedicated to Coach Jim Pardue for his many contributions to HHS. He has worked with students in the classroom, inthe area of sports and as an administra- tor. He has brought to each area a sense of humor, fair play and caring for the people he works with. Coach Pardue is perhaps best known for his work as Head Basket- ball Coach, a position he has held since 1967. Across the state, he has gained recognition for producing out- standing teams year after year. He has been named Western North Carolina Coach of the Year four times and, in 1972, led the Bearcats to the state AAA championship. Coach Pardue has served as Vice- Principal at HHS since 1980. As an administrator, he encourages the high standards of behavior that the school and community expect from its students. We dedicate the Laure- ate to Coach Pardue in thanks for his service to our school. Dedicationf99 T ITIES Band members perform their routines for the motorama. The dominate colors at HHS dur- ing football season, however, will always remain red and white. When game days rolled around in 1982, proud Bear- cats showed spirit by buying victory ribbons. With inflation bringing the cost of living to an all-time high, the victory ribbons still remained at the traditional price of 10c:. Stu- dents unselfishly sacrificed weekend money to show class spirit. Although class competition was tough, Mrs. Edwards homeroom once again sold the record number of ribbons which earned a free lunch at Jimmy's Pizza. Selling victory ribbons was one of the LAUREATE'S ma- jor fund raisers and was, therefore, very successful. The staff counted and pinned each ribbon in preparation of sales, and every Thursday the staff performed skits pro- moting sales for Friday morn- ing. They were able to learn about America by spending a year with a host family in Hendersonville. Their reac- tions to new environments were both positive and en- thusiastic.
