Sing Carolina’s praise! Hail to our Alma Mater; _ ; Hendersonville always! Ready we stand, to her just demand _ Loyal and eager stand we now, To keep our future bright. Pledged to the Red and White! Vii Deep in December it’s nice to remember, Although you know the snow will follow. Deep in December it’s nice to remember, Without a hurt a heart is hollow. Deep in December it’s nice to remember, The fire of September that made us mellow. Deep in December our hearts should remember — And follow !!! 15 Dedicdied REMEMBERED Not on our golden fortunes builded high— Not on our boasts that soar into the sky— Not upon these is resting in this hour The fate of the future; but upon this power Of her who is remembered. | She seeks no office and she asks no praise For all the patient labor of her days. She is the one supporting the.huge weight; She is the one guarding the school’s gate. She bears the burdens of these earthly ways; We pile the debts; she is the one who pays. She is the one who holds the solid power To steady students in their trembling hour. . Shall then this woman be forgotten? Do something for her; let her never be Forgotten. A. Smt D218 LI a Lt On Our school system is operated by Hendersonville City Board of Education whose members are appointed by the City Commission- ers who are elected by the people. Few people realize the amount of effort that the Board devotes to the school system. It is the duty of the Board to engage personnel to maintain buildings and facili- ties, and most importantly, to obtain necessary funds. The Board works through the superintendent, who has direct contact with school personnel. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Ben Prince; Mr. Henry Marsh; Mr. Hugh Randall; Mr. John Gregory; Dr. James Lutz. (Not present at the time of the picture was Mr. C. E. Livingston). 18 If teachers and pupils work together in the classrooms, they cannot be insensitive to overtones of the cultural problems and the issues that come to the forefront in homes and in schools. I wish to congratulate Henderson ville High School in the way it is dealing with these cultural developments in a way that adds to the dignity, freedom, moral stamina, and well-being of this community. Hugh D. Randall The Laureate for many years has been thought of as a mirror to reflect the life, the thought, and the spirit of Hendersonville High School. I am sure that your labors on the 1967-68 Laureate have been pleasant and rich in meaning. Congratulations to you and the entire Senior Class. C. M. King As you try to remember through the pages of this Laureate, may your memories be pleasant of your days at HHS. As you recall friends, classes, and activities, may you feel proud of the record you have made individually, as a class, and as the Student Body in upholding the traditions and standards of the school. I wish for each of you the very best in the years ahead. R. The primary objectives of Student Council are to serve the school and develop leadership in the students. The Council meets every Wednes- day morning at 7:45 AM. Much of the planning for these meetings is carried out by the Executive Board, consisting of the officers; President—John Porter, Vice- President—Powers English, Secretary—Sandra Rogers, and Treasurer—Sam Neill. These officers work together with the Faculty advisor, Mrs. Croft. However, most of the actual work is done in committees and by the representatives them- selves. During 1967-68 the Student Council began several new projects at H.H.S. A Freshman Orientation was held at the first of the year to acquaint new students with the school. The Interclub Council was established to improve club relations and cooperation. A Leadership Clinic was conducted for the purpose of develop- ing student leaders. Preparations were made to help establish an active Student Council at the Junior High School. An AFS Fellowship was held in February for all N.C. Foreign Exchange Students. 82 Student Council Members Serve School Aside from these new projects, the Student Council has endeavored to serve the school by sponsoring a public telephone, helping with the Diabetes Detection Drive, installing a suggestion box, beginning study halls before school, aiding the special education classes, promoting the Mental Health Workshop, controlling line-breaking, and staging a Student Council Assembly. The Student Council has honored others by giving flowers to the teachers during National Educational Week and giving turkeys to the janitors at Christmas. In the social area the Student Council has sponsored several soc hops, the Homecoming Parade and Dance, the Twirp Dance, and a Graduation social. Main financial projects have been the sale of balloons at football games and the Bottle Drive in March. Much of the Student Council’s energies have been devoted to the improvement of the conduct, attitude, and co- operation of the Student Body. 83 Hey Club “We Build” Key Club is an international service organization sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.
