Student Council activities covered a broad area of student life in 1966-67. A New Student's Party, a number of sock hops, a Christmas Dance, and a Twirp Dance were sponsored by the Student Council to meet the social needs of the student. In order to establish a better intellectual atmosphere, the council created a special Stu- dent- Faculty Relations Committee. An appeal was made to Mr. Lockaby to change mid-term and final exam schedules. Nearly $600 was raised in a highly success- ful bottle drive. This fund is more than enough for a foreign exchange student next year. The Council sold Student Directories and Bearcat hats at or below cost to boost school spirit and benefit the students. Most importantly, the Council acted as a sounding board of student opinion. Student feel- ings on going off campus at lunch were conveyed to the school board. Also, an attempt was made to improve assemblies and to sample student opinion on this matter. In short, this year's Student Council made an honest effort to represent the student body and to make H.H.S. a better place. Lynn Padgett, Secretary; Grant Healy, Treasurer; John Porter, Vice President; Casey Jones, Presi- dent. 78 The Student Council sponsors sock hops to provide social fellowship among the students. One can learn from athletics not only about other people but also how to get along with them. Inteam games, competition teaches the individual how to work with others for group goals. Making decisions and accepting respon- sibility for the consequences is required on the playing field as in life. We strive to encourage a spirit of fair- ness, observance of the rules, sporting at- titudes toward teammates and opponents, and ability to take it'’ in victory or defeat. We hope that among your experiences at H.H.S., the ones of athletic competition will be the most cherished. Sincerely, Joe Hunt Coach Charles Byrd, Bearcat football line coach, graduated with a B.S. degree in 1958 from Western Carolina College. Following graduation, he entered the Marine Corps, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. Returning from the Marines, Byrd received anM.A. degree from Western Carolina in 1965. In addition to his football duties, Byrd is also the tennis coach. 103 Coach Joe Hunt, now in his third year as head coach of the Bearcats, graduated from Western Carolina College in 1950. From there he went to his position as head football coach at Sylva-Webster High School. In 1964 Hunt took over as Athletic Director of Hendersonville High School. Coach Hunt is also in charge of the golf team. Coach James Seay, also a Western Carolina College Alumnus, graduated in 1965. The two seniors this year were the big point pro- ducers. Wayne Hoots from the outside had an average of 18.1 points per game, and David McDaniel on the key had a 14.1 point average. Strength out front was provided by Porter and Eng- lish who, although only in their first year on the Var- sity court, proved to be excellent ball-handlers. ° Eric Orr and Bill Bailey in the forward spots also added to the depth of the 'Cats as they were found to be dependable in all departments.
