Iresident Vice-President . . . . .Secretary . . . .Treasurer . . . . .Reporter Page 10 - ATI E T0 RE EMBER On a cold winter day as the snow softly floated to the ground, I sat in front of a glowing fire- place. In the beautiful embers I saw the mem- ories that my class and I had formed. I suddenly remembered the first day as 54 frantic freshmen entered the doors of ole' H. H. S. But Miss Margaret Grime and Coach Paul Burgess were there to help us gather our wits, The first thing we did was to elect the officers of our class. We chose Jean Caruthers, President: Jane Montgomery, Vice President: Pat Edwards, Secretary: Earline Curtis, Treas- urer: Virginia- Helm, Reporter: and Kenneth Lemons, Sgt.-at-Arms. We elected Pat Edwards and Earline Curtis as cheerleaders and Jean Caruthers as Football Queen Attendant. As I looked at one ember it reminded me of the red knees which resulted from a skating party at the Hippodrome. As the embers grew higher, I seemed to recall more of our unforgettable days at ole' H. H. S. In the fall of '56 our class gathered again for another year of hard work. The first thing we did was to elect our class oflicers, President, Jack Avant: Vice President, Pat Edwards: Secretary, jane Montgomery: Treasurer, Linda Beech: Re- porter, Sally Tillmang Sgt.-at-Arms, Pat Hart- man. We elected Earline Curtis and Linda Beech as cheerleaders and Pat Edwards as Foot- ball Queen Attendant. Earline Curtis was win- ner of the Latin Medal. One of the highlights of our Sophomore year was our picnic and skat- ing party at Centennial Park and the Hippo- drome. As I continued to gaze into the glowing embers I recall to memory the glowing memories of our eventful junior year. We chose to guide us through this trying year, Mrs. Gilbert jones and Coach A. D. Starnes. We elected as officers, President, Pat Hartman: Vice Presidents, Ellis Brewington and james Campbell: Secretary, Pat Edwards: Treasurer, Glenda Whitaker: Re- porter, john Barrett: and Sgt,-at-Arms, Larry Reynolds. We chose as cheerleaders Earline Curtis, Captain, and Pat Edwa-rds and for Foot- ball Queen Attendant we chose Carolyn Castle. The winner of the Typist Medal was Pat Ed- wards and the winner of the Athletic Medal was Glenda Whitaker. The Representatives of Girls and Boys' State were Kathleen Forkum and Ray Butler. This was truly an eventful memory in our social world. VVe had a gala time at the junior and Senior Prom, our theme being Mardi Gras. Another of our unforgettable moments was our junior Play, entitled the Imaginary In- valid, which was ar great success. As the fire crackled and sent a few sparks sputtering up the chimney it reminded me of the confusion that resulted when the time came for us to order our long awaited rings. After things were straight- ened out, everyone was well satisfied and very proud of them. As I wandered back over the years the fire gradually became only dying embers, this be- gan to bring more forcefully and vividly to my mind the end of our journey through school. It was fast coming to a close, just one more year to go, but as it unfolds itself its been the most glorious of them all. As our leader and advisor we chose Miss Milton Curtis. As our officers we chose Pat Hartman, President: Ray Butler, Vice President: jane Montgomery, Secretary: Pa-t Edwards, Treasurer: and Kathleen Forkum as Reporter. For the cheerleaders again Pat Ed- wards and Earline Curtis, were chosen. Earline was elected Captain by the cheerleader squad. The Homecoming Queen was Kathleen Forkum and Football Queen Attendant was Glenda Whitaker, and Carolyn Castle was F.F.A. Queen Attendant. Pat Hartman was elected the Stu- dent Council President from our class. 'The officers were also from our class, lst Vice Presi- dent, Ray Butler: 2nd Vice President, Kathleen Forkum: Secretary, Pat Edwards. Even though the embers were gradually fading away, I still recall the steak supper the boys gave the girls. This was given as the result of our magazine campaign. Our trip to Washington and Gradu- ation remained as the final glowing embers in the fireplace to mark the end of the unforgettable four years we the Seniors have spent at H. H. S. I had heard that Gene had become quite fa- mous and it was rumored that he had almost perfected a rocket ship which was capable of reaching Mars. My curiosity was aroused and I decided to stop in and in- quire if the rumors were true. After being sworn to secrecy I was shown through the ship. As we were about to step off the ship my foot caught in a lever near the doorway and the next thing I knew I was whirling through space! Gene and Nell had jumped clear and I was all alone in a strange world. Suddenly there was a thud. All was still again. Cautiously llpeered outside and what should I see but Pat Hartman! He welcomed me to Greenland Mars and sent one of his little green men off to call Marion and the children. Unknown to the earth people Hartman had been sent to Mars on a special mission. He inquired about all of our classmates of '58. He was glad to hear that: Sallye Tillman has become America's most famous com- poser. Liberace presented to her his golden candelabra. Her picture is quite sure to go into the Hall of Fame. Wayne Mitchell and Donald Woodard have their own partnership. It'ls identified by-Mitchell and Woodard Groceries Inc. jane Montgomery has her own special dress shop in New York. She does her own designing and has become quite famous. She is quite efficient in filling the place of Mrs. Starnes who has just retired. jack Avant and Taylor Carter have their own dancing school in Chicago. Rock and Roll is no longer popular so they are teaching The Moon Sender Dance. Roy Taylor King has his own U-Drive-It Company in Nashville, Tennessee. Christine Vaughn has a family of three and is secre- tary of the P.T.A. and president of the Women's Club in her commbnity. Linda Beech and Shirley Shoulders hold prominent positions as models for Lilly Dache' in gay Par'ee. Shelba Story writes the script for the Red Buttons Show. It seems that her practical joking paid off. Bob Ralph has taken Dudley Green's position as sports writer for The Nashville Banner. He's the best yetl Page 16 il Nancy Dotson is executive secretary for Wayne Gib- bons in Hollywood. Wayne has become famous as a producer of western movies. Those inseparable twins, Murrell and Calvin Stamps are founders of the famous Stamps Kennels. Collies are their specialty. Barbara Garrett is an Avon representative for the com- munity of Old Hickory. She and Ray have six girls at home-three sets of twins! Margaret Smith is Physical Education instructor at Tennessee Tech. She has just been promoted to Head of the Phys. Ed. Dept. for freshman girls. Peggy Dotson-oh, pardon me-Peggy Cook is very happy just taking care of Robert and their five handsome children. Being a famous interior decorator and having a hus- band named Donald and two lovely children' to care for all combine to make a mighty busy woman out of Earline Curtis, er-r-r, Dixon. There's no stopping that Glenda Whitaker. She's just won the title of Champion Ice Skater of the World. However, she's proudest of Robert and their three ador- able children. Carolyn Castle has her own business-The Castle Day- time Nursery. She loves every minute of it and the kids worship her. Wayne Smith is a confirmed bachelor and also a traveling salesman for Royal Vacuum Cleaners. Ann Hale has just been voted best dressed woman in America. Hazel Mae Steele and Thelma Frazier have set up their own Nurses Training school in Southern China. They are serving humanity in a great way. Gene Gourley is head football coach at H. H. S. Last year his team set a perfect record. They are looking for big things this season. Dorothy Ann Buchanan, or rather Keele, has just been elected Mrs. America. johnny was so proud of her that he went out and bought her a new mink coat. Sue Ann Garrett, other than being a housewife, has established the Generosity Club of Americas Through this organization, she helps to. educate underprivileged children. The Martians begged me to stay with them but I was lonesome already for good old earth so during the night I stole away in the rocket ship and whirled back to Gene's Scientific Lab. Take this story and believe it or not. There's one thing for sure-never again will I board anything that even looks like it might fly!
