lc 1950 HENDER BILL DEATON, Editor NEVADA THOMASON, Business Manager Page 2 i- SON Sia EXPOSES  We won’t try to tell you what the Reddie Spirit 1s — because we don’t know ourselves. We do know that it is something—an intangible something — that gets you the first few days in Henderson and never leaves you as long as the memory of Henderson exists. “his year we have again seen the Reddie Spirit come out as it always has in the past — the teamwork, the friendliness and fun, the brotherhood and the work — an incomparable combination earning us the name of “The School With a Heart.” If you are from Henderson you have felt this Reddie Spirit. The Reddies opened their 1949 campaign with a smashing 47-20 victory over the Ark- ansas College Highlanders from Batesville. The HSTC eleven built up a 40-0 lead by the intermission. Coach Duke Well’s gridders scored three WD sainathe first period to roll over Arkansas A M at Monticello 30-20. Victory number three came at the expense of Hendrix College. The Reddies trounced the Warriors 33-7 to remain undefeated. The next week the Red and Gray travel- ed to meet the Arkansas State Teachers Bears. The Reddies had to take to the air before they could crack a stubborn defense and blank the Bruins 12-0. Magnolia A M gave the Henderson crew a scare before the Reddies won their fifth victory 7-0. At Clarksville the following week, Hen- derson had to come from behind for the first time. The College of the Ozarks held a 14-7 half-time lead but the Wellsmen came back strong to win 20-14. In probably the most impressive win of the year the Reddies dumped a favored Ark- ansas State eleven 28-6 on Haygood field to give them a 7-0 record. Henderson never could get their offense moving the next week in the championship game at Russellville and the Wonder Boys triumphed 26-0. Then the annual Turkey-Day Classic. A crowd of around 8,000 jammed Haygood Field and watched the Reddies go almost at will against the Ouachita Tigers for the first 53 minutes of play. During this time the Red- dies scored two touchdowns and two extra points for a 14-0 lead. In the last seven min- utes of the game the Bengals evened the count and won on a last-minute field goal 17-14. CoacHEes WELLS, HONAKER AND APPLEBY Page 183 “Season § First Henderson _---------- 47.
