A record-breaking enrollment has en- abled more students to catch the spirit of the School with a Heart. The Heart of Henderson is big. Every person in the his- tory of Henderson's campus has made it so. In this 1947 Star, we offer you the key to this school year. It has been impossible to record everything worth remem- bering . . . but let the links of our key chain in the following pages stimulate your individual chain of mem- ories . . . Page 138 1 IQLMJ Gridiron Qesults Sports at Henderson resumed full-scale operation with the opening of the football season. Head Coach Duke Wells and As- sistant Coaches L. I. Van Horn and Robert CSleepyD Thomasson had many former Reddie gridders around with which to build a strong team which finished second in the state in total games played, winning five, losing three, and tying one. Led by All-Staters Dale Wood, Don Muse and Fletcher Kizzia, the Fledmen rolled rap- idly in both early and mid-season. After dropping a game to Oklahoma City Univer- sity, they won five straight games, beating Arkansas A.cStM., Hendrix, Arkansas State Teachers, College of the Ozarks, and East Central Oklahoma Teachers. A tie-game with Arkansas State broke the spell and was followed by two defeats: to Arkansas Tech and Ouachita. Each game was a story in itself. Oklahoma City University . 53 Henderson ..... 0 The Heddies opened their grid season 400 miles from home, tackling a big OCU team coached by two former Hendersonians, Bo Rowland and Bo Sherman. Rowland had played under Henderson's limmie Hay- goody Sherman under Ftowlandp and Duke Wells under Sherman. 'Twas a grand re- union, but as Coach Wells said, We were playing out of our league. Henderson .... 5 Arkansas A.cSfM .... 0 ln the first night football game ever played on Haygood Field, the Ftedmen beat a strong team from Monticello. The Reddies began clicking to move goal-ward during the second half. E. Kizzia tore through a hole in the line, then lateralled to Clint Full- er, who raced across for the only score of the game. Henderson . . Z l Hendrix .... 0 lt was a beautiful day in Conway, where the Henderson gridsters backed by some 200 . special train rooters scalped the Hen- drix Warriors. The game was scarcely five minutes old when F. Kizzia plowed through the line to score after a sustained march down the field. A pass interception by Rich- ards followed by a long pass from Hammons to Sawyer accounted for the second score. Another interception, this time by Sanders, sent the Reddies digging for pay-dirt with F. Kizzia again plowing over for the tally. E. Kizzia kicked all three extra points. Henderson .... l9 Arkansas State Teachers . 0 A rip-roaring, fast-charging, hard-driving Reddie eleven stunned' Arkansas State Teacher's Bears l9-0 in the second home game of the season. A recovered fumble by Fuller on the Bear 25, a short pass from Kizzia to Hays in the end zone, and the score was 6-0 for Henderson. Soon thereafter lim Goza blocked a Bear punt and F. Kizzia plunged over for another score. A thick fog in the fourth quarter failed to stop the Fteddies, as F. Kizzia intercepted a Bear pass on their 20 and lateralled to Fuller, who carried to the 3, from where Kizzia plowed over. Henderson .... 19 East Central Okla. Tchrs. . l2 Playing heads-up ball with a never- say-die spirit, the Reddies came from be- hind to beat East Central Oklahoma Teach- ers team at Ada. After falling behind l2-0, the Redmen reached pay-dirt just before the half on an intercepted pass by Red Gat- tin, who ran some 45 yards to score. Fletch- er Kizzia passed to lack Sanders for Hen- derson's second score, and the winning touchdown was scored by Harry Ledbetter. Henderson .... 33 College of the Ozarks . 0 Rain failed to dampen the Reddie power as Henderson downed College of the Ozarks 33-0. A first-quarter drive, led by the Kizzia boys and Sanders, ended in a score with Elbert plunging over from the l2. Again in the second quarter, Elbert plowed over for the tally. After receiving an Ozarks punt, Buddy Parker raced 60 yards to score. The Reddies ended a long drive by McBrien charging through to score. A long punt re- turn by Parker and a plunge by Fuller put the ball on the Ozarks 5, from where F. Kizzia made the final Reddie touchdown. CContinued on page 1451 Page 139 HM MACK SAWYER . . He-nderson's great line, headed by Wood, Muse, Rich, Goza and Hays, threw back repeated thrusts of the lndians, twice within the 10 yard line. Arkansas Tech . . . 14 Henderson .... 7 This was a tough one to lose, but the Reddies looked and fought like champions in dropping a 14-7 decision to the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys. Henderson scored first after recovering a fumble on the Tech 12. A leaping catch by Iim Sawyer and a pass by E. Kizzia bagged the touchdown with Muse kicking the extra point. Tech came right back to score on line plays. In the second quarter Tech scored again. Ouachita . . 26 Henderson .... 14 Playing before a homecoming crowd of 7,300 at Williams Field on Thanksgiving Day, the Reddies and Tigers staged an ex- citing battle with Ouachita emerging vic- torious. Henderson scored first on an 80-yard drive sparked by Elbert and Fletcher Kizzia and led 7-0 at the end of the quarter. Oua- chita then took over the offensive play, and before the Reddies could get a winning drive started, the Tigers led 26-7. Late in the fourth quarter a short over-the-line pass from Parker to Fuller started the best play of the game. Fuller, with a five man wall in front of him, went 55 yards to the Tiger 15, where he lateralled to Rogers, who car- ried to the two yard line. Ledbetter scored and Muse kicked extra point. The Reddies gained steam in the stretch drive to win seven straight conference games and nose out Ouachita for second place. A win over the confer- ence champion Arkansas State Teachers quintet at Conway started the Reddie victory string, which was followed by two wins over Hendrix, and one each over Arkansas Tech, Little Rock Iunior College, Oua- chita, and Arkansas A, G M. The game with Ouachita in Henderson's Armory was by far the most exciting, as the Reddies nosed out the Tigers 46-45 before an overflow crowd. The state college basketball tournament was held on our court with the Arkansas State College Indians of Ionesboro beating Arkansas State Teachers Bears of Conway for the title. Henderson defeated Hendrix in its first game 47-44, but bowed to a fresh Bear team in its second game of the tournament. Carroll Wood was selected on the all-conference first team as a result of his outstanding play. lim Fisher and Iulius Adams were chosen on the third team. Other Reddie players who turned in fine per' iormances throughout the season are Guinn Daniel, Iim Mac Sawyer, Horace Broom, Neil Welch, and lim McMahon. Page 152 Tennis and Golf Henderson's golf and tennis teams won state championships this year by brushing aside all opposition at the A.l.C. meet in Con- way April 26. The Reddies also made good showings earlier in the season. The first golf match against State Teach- ers found the foursome of lim Lowder- milk, Mike Shoffner, Ian Crow, and Clay- born Fletcher easily defeating the Bear golfers on the local links. ln a re- turn match at Conway, lim, Mike, lan, and Iames Kaufman again won over the Bear team. The third match was with Ouachita, and though the scores of our Reddie men were much better as a whole, the Ouachita team won using the Nassau match play scoring system by a 7-6 score. The Reddies also defeated Hendrix but lost to Ouachita in the last intra-city dual match. ln the A.I.C., Shoffner was second only to Hendrix's Willis Watkins in medalist play. The Reddie net team composed of George Caristianos, Bob Reynolds, Hugh White, and Harvey Walls defeated State Teachers on the local courts four matches to none in play cut short by rain. The second match for the net squad also was against the Bears , but this time at Conway. Q r S if ' i. 5 1 Bob Reynolds and George Caristianos George, Bob, Hugh, Roy Bardwell, and Bill Robey won this time four matches to two. Henderson swept all six matches with Ouachita in the first meeting and won three of five sets in the second meeting. Caris- tianos and Reynolds teamed together to take the state doubles title, defeating Arkansas College, ASTC, and Ouachita. Both reached the finals in the singles and postponed their title game until Reddie Day, May l. Clayborn Fletcher, Mike Shoffner, Iim Lowdermilk, Ian Crow. Since the Star previously Was a private enterprise, this year's staff was handicapped by a lack of publication records. A great deal of hard work has gone into the preparation of the 1947 edition. The editor and business manager were ably assisted by a Willing and cooperative staff Without whose help this book would have been impossible. Reporters always met their deadlines, and each issue was off the press on time-a record unequaled since pre- war days. A point system was established, whereby members of both the editorial and business staffs could work toward earning col- lege letters. Presentation of these awards took place during the late spring, after the Oracle had made an excellent showing in the contests sponsored by the Arkansas College Press Association. A post-semester edition came out in late May, summarizing Henderson during l946- 47. Copies were mailed to all students who attended school this year. Qfpefuafjnlgef Selective harvesting . . . sustained yield! These are the factors which insure perpetual timber supply for America's future generations. And these are the governing factors at Crossett. Nearly 50 years ago, when the Crossett Companies were founded, a systematic program of selective harvesting and reforestation was begun. For every tree cut, at least another was to grow. Then, that waste might be reduced to a minimum, extensive research was invested in the utilization of forest by-products. Out of this came Crossett's kraft paper mill and chemical plant, with other potentials still in the making, to expand the cycle of total use. So it is as a completely integrated forest products enterprise that Crossett looks ahead . . . integration which assures future generations a perpetual timber supply while serving ours today.
