Part of our Heart has been gone with the boys and girls who are serving our country. In spite of this we have had enriched and profitable school days. This STAR gives you a pic- ture of how you and your friends have spent this wartime school year. As nothing is perfect, mistakes already noticed have crept in at a time too late for correction. Please understand that the printer, the en- graver, and we ourselves have been handicapped by shortages. The time element also has contributed to many mistakes. If these errors con- cern you, we are extremely sorry. In this space the Editor extends sincerest thanks to the Staff, to Miss Bennie Gene Bledsoe, and to Miss Amy Jean Greene for their untiring cooperation. May this, your 1945 STAR, al- ways recall pleasant memories of Henderson. You have done it first by being yourself. Under your sensible, understanding, and cheerful guid- ance, We have grown, and our Women stu- dents have caught your spirit of noble living. For passing over all the foolish, frivolous, and weak things that you cannot help seeing in us, for ignoring the possibilities of the weakling in us, and for laying firm hold on the possibilities of our good, we thank you. With sincere appreciation for your keen insight, rare judgment, and frank criticisms, We honor you not only as our Dean of Wom- en, but also as an understanding friend. For these reasons We dedicate our 1945 STAR to you - - - Miss Eleanor Gilliam. AEM ff 'Q1hMii5HH5IEPDFf6L'31' 6BBEi!YbYkfi5fEFH-?f15E39KlfXl?v3 1??iJi'2'f Wifi? Rl!! EMF RWfJ7f7i95iE -. Her friendliness, tact, and dependability have merited such honors as Editor of the Oracle, President of Y. W. C. A., and membership into Kappa Delta Pi. With her persistence, ability, and ever-increasing popularity, it is easy to see why leanne is Hender- son's Most Valuable Student. CLAUDIA AGEE Claudia has proved herself an exceptional lead- er and a good influence on the campus through her work with the Upsilon Phi Sorority, the Woman's Council, and the Choral Club. An accomplished music student, a sophisticated senior, and an at- tractive all-around young woman-that's Claudia. BEVERLY BEANE Because everyone who knows her loves her, because she has made a place just for herself at Henderson, and because Bev is so easy to get along with, she was chosen for national WHO'S WHO. President of the Iunior Class is one of her many honors. Bev loves bridge, fun, and people, and by simply being herself she is a top-ranking Reddie on the campus. menlcan Qolllleaaa and Clllnivenmtials WANDA BILLINGSLEA National WHO'S WHO fell to Wanda for the second time this year also. Her vivacious person- ality has gained her the honor of cutest girl at Hen- derson for three years. Wanda is the capable Edi- tor of the Star, and because of her ability as a leader has headed the Senior Class, Kappa Delta Pi, and Philo Sorority as president. EURITH DILDY Daddy Dildy's widespread popularity on the campus merited him a place in national WHO'S WHO. Always ready to make the best of any situ- ation, Eurith has added much to all events on the campus. During the first semester he led Gammas as their president and has made a place for him- self on the Henderson campus which cannot be filled by anyone. SUE JONES Being a transfer did not hinder Sue's popularity in the least. By her second year at Henderson she was chosen for national WHO'S WHO. Either a queen or maid at all social events, this music stu- dent from Malvern has shown that she possesses not only intelligence, but beauty and popularity as Well. clllfholi clllfho allmonglt Studentli in MARTHA SEARCY A beauty every year at Henderson and Queen of Stars when only a sophomore, Martha has also carried the honor ot the most popular girl for two years. ln spite of being a little girl, Mott has won the heart oi everyone with her sweet smile and pleas- ant disposition. Beauty, however, is not all with Martha, for she is a Kappa Delta Pi member, vice-president ot the Student Body, and has o major part in almost every cam- pus activity. ROY SCOGGINS To enumerate all oi Boy's honors at Henderson would be impossible. His major position this year is that of president of the Student Body. A member oi national WHO'S WHO for the second year, Boy has also claimed such titles as Most Versatile Boy, Friendliesi Boy, Most Popular Boy, and Typi- cal Henderson Boy in our own Colleqe's Who's Who. His winning personality has drawn friends to him from over the whole campus. meniccm Collllecliea and flflntuanziitlaa BURHELL VENABLE Burrell, a very well-known figure at Hen- derson, has his finger in almost every pie here. A junior from Texarkana, being sec- ond semester president of Gamma Sigma, and member of the Student Senate are a few of his honors. Mail call is his most popular time, and his work in the Bookstore, humor and patient answers to Burrell, did I get a letter? are a few reasons he has made his own niche at Henderson. GLORIA YOUNG Versatile is the word for Gloria. Almost a straight A student and super-efficient business manager of the Star, combined with an over abundance of vitality and ability to have a good time make her an exceptional young lady. Spanish is her pet, and she says she is going to South America some day. Sparkling eyes, bobbing curls, and a cute smile make her an all-over favorite on the campus. IBEIIIIIE IRACKET By Hoy scoeaiivs After inactivity in sports for two years, Henderson and other Arkan- sas colleges resumed a partial sche- dule cf athletics in l944-45. The REDDHES played a schedule of sixteen games with colleges and service teams. Henderson began the season by taking three warm-up victories from independent teams of Gurdon and Arkadelphia. I Two of the top service teams of the South, NATTC and NAS of Mem- phis, soundly trounced the REDDIES in the opening games of the season. Henderson was no match for the ser- vice stars. Collegiate competition began with a two-day trip to Conway, and the REDDIES dropped games to Hendrix and State Teachers. The next game played was in Russellville, and Hen- derson was on the short end of a game played against Arkansas Tech. The rivalry between Henderson and Ouachita was renewed with the Tigers taking a thrilling 49-43 victory. Blytheville Army Air Field de- feated the REDDIES in the first game of a five-day road trip. Then came a close defeat by the Arkansas State College quintet. NATTC and NAS again easily won over the REDDIES in two games played at the Naval Base in Memphis. Henderson lost two more games to Ouachita. The season was com- pleted as the REDDIES lost in games played with State Teachers, Hendrix, State College, and Arkansas Tech. Coach Duke Wells held intra- mural football practice for three weeks. The HEDDIE squad of 23 men showed much spiritg and if V-E day comes during the summer, the football team will play a full sche- dule next fall. lntra-mural programs were car- ried out in touch-football, ping pong and softball. Many close and ex- citing games were played in the four-team football league. Two ping pong tournaments were held during the year. Softball games furnished recreation after spring football was completed. The Senior class and Y. M. C. A. added sports interest to the college program by sponsoring two high school invitation basketball tcurna- ments. Hendersonians can expect a big shot in the arm now that the REDDIES are about to resume athletics. The abandonment of sports was neces- sary to add strength to our fighting forces. However, Arkansas colleges can now see ahead to a future of intercollegiate sports, and Hender- sonians are all HREDDIEH to train for them in a big way. fl - I , Grganizations ROY Student Senate OFFICERS ROY SCOGGINS .
