Foal-h Rowlantl's attitude since he has boon ooaeli ot' th lirdtlies has het-n an t-xt-nipiii-it-atitm of that courageous spirit. So surf'esst'ully has he inculoatecl that spirit into his men. that the team has aohievirl two suc-vessful seasons untlt-r the han- ilioap ol' almost insuporalilt- tlitiioulties. Rowland has the strength and personality of a great coach. and during his two years lit-re has built up a host of ardent frienrls and admirers. W BENNIE PARKER Captain Bennie has the honor of having piloted the Redclies suovtissfully through one of the most arflUOUS seasons in Ht-ntlt-rson-Brown gridiron history. Parker wt-ll mt-rits the praise which he has received as the learler of the 19215 Rt-dtlie vlan. No harder worker, fierr-er lighter and more f-onsoientious leader has ew-r captains-tl an Arkansas football team. It was largely Parlit-r's courage and lighting spirit whivh animated tht' past seas0n's Rvtldii- toam, anal it was his sheer merit as a football player whiz-h gainetl him a plzlc-in on the All-State team. He has to his credit an enviable revortl as a i-antain :intl as a player. JOHN ADAMS Caplain-EIN! John comm-s into the inheritance of a bt'-rth left vacant hy the passing of a great captain. This is a position whit-h, under suvh vircumstanct--s, is particularly tlirlit-ult to fill with unusual cietlit. But those who know the new captain of tho Reildies feel no anxiety on that soore. J0hn's l'C'C'0l'tl in the past both on the gridiron and in privfitt- life has boon a splendirl one. He has all of tho qual- ifications of a good leaflt-r t-ombincrl with uursual ability as a player. Adams comes into the position as captain at a most auspicious time. Ncxt year bids fair to be the most stui-vt-ssful in Reddie gridiron history. XYith the combination of a grt-at team and a great captain, the 1927 Rt-ddies should make football history. TOlN'IlVlIE LOVELL Managfr Loyalty has always been tht- most certain indication of unwavering faith in anything. If this is true, then Tommie's faith in tho Redtlies is supreme. Tommie has not simply been an offivial busi- ness manager of the team, but what is more he has been its most loyal adherent and its most unfailing supporter. His services have been invaluable to the team and his loyalty has been an inspiration to less constant supporters. .3 , .t PROCTOR HILL 11411-fllllflf Frip is also mir- of tht- fast, shitty ltiniil with ph-nty of weight and drive to rip tht'-ligli ai lint for :ippi-P-1-izihlo gains. EVANS VVRIGHT Quarterlzacla Here is one of the heafliest, i'l-Pvtest little lmrits that over t-nrried a pigsltiu tlirongii a lvr..'q.-n ri--ld. Lavking L-onfidonct' in his natural ability, Evans performed ohst-uriely on thi- I.l1'ag,on Blowing Mavhine for threat years, thvn in his senior year he blazed like a meteor across the griilixon Hiinaim-nt. Start- ing in the Magnolia Aggie game, he playttd brilliantly and with the aid of better intwitvi'-eiiv-J than wus given-him, would have turned clelfeat into victory. Ht- starred in ev:-ry game throughout the season, and his record for this single year of varsity football is difficult to surpass. ALLAN BERRY Right Guard During a season when good guards were plentiful, Berry's playillg UU'0Ugh0Ut the SGRSOH WHS outstanding enough to place him on the All-Association team. Big, fast and powerful with a ready ability to dope out plays before they were started, he starred on the defense and his offensive playing was above par. YVith two more years of football still before him his record in the future should be even better than his record of the past, JOHN ADAh'IS Left Tackle Pontlvrous in bulk, powerful in action, John was a continual menace to the opposing' team. His driving strength united with his smashing tactics enabled him to smash many of the opposing plays he-fore they were well started. Adams is Captain-elect for next year, and with due considera- tion for his past fine record, next season should be his best. ROBERT THOMASSON Right Tarklf Here is another instance of the Return ot' the Native. After an absence of a. year from the Reddie ranks, Slumber returned to continue a splendid record begun in 1922. His record during the past season was a brilliant one, his playing always above the ordinary. A driving power of offense, he seldom missed getting his man when the play came through the line. This is probably Slumher's last year on a college gridiron, and it marks :L brilliant finale to a. fine football career. CLARENCE CORNISH Right End Krupp came into his new position by virtue of his speed and his ability to receive passes. A tremendously hard hitter, he was exceptionally brilliant on offensive work. In every game he materially aided his own backs in gaining ground by cutting down the opposing secondary defense with monotonous regularity. He played halfbaek on defensefhis former position was halfback. Cornish offered a nice exhibition at the flank position, even with his lack of experience at the new job. A brilliant record will be expected of him next season. 4. k J EUGENE SHERMAN Left Taflzle Bo was careful to begin his college gridiron career by acquiring a splendid record. According to many competent football critics, Sherman was one of the best tackles in the state. He starred consistently from the beginning of the season. A smashing type of player, he offered opposing teams no end of trouble. This is Sherman's first year in college football and with the acquisition of experience, he should develop into one of the greatest players that Arkansas has evcr produced. AL Cox Center Cox was throughout the season a good, hard-playing, dependable man. Equally good at defense or offense, he constituted a strong cog in the Reddie machine. A high school center of some fame, he easily adapted himself to college gridiron environment and bids well to become a great player. PAUL LIVELY Left Guard Lively is one of these steadily consistent fine players who stars in every game. Though not a spectacular grandstand player, he was a constant power in the line both offensively and de- fensively. Lively's fme playing contributed greatly to the impressive showing made by the Reddie line during the last season. GRADY NEWTON Center A famous saying has it that centers are born, not made. Grady seems to be one exception to that rule. His favorite position was formerly right guard, until the Reddies found themselves badly in need of a center, then he was called upon to handle the job. That he filled the position well may be seen from his record of the past season. He stood out as one of the bulwarks of a strong nine. RAYAIOND FISHER Halfbadc lialfbark Fisher, who hails t'rom Missouri, early established his fame in Arkansas football by almost eonsistently spectacular playing. By that we do not intend to imply that Fisher was a grand- stand player, he was not. His playing was simply so outstanding that it well deserved the title of spt--etaeular. Fisher was equally good at skirting the ends and in plunging the line. It might truly he said ol' him that he never failed to gain yardage either way when Called upon to earry the ball, He played right end on defense and covered himself with glory by his defensive playing. LOY EVANS Quarterlzack The Dermott Flash they Called him during his high school days. and the name is no misnomer. 'Fleet of foot and shitty, Loy was always hard to pull down in a broken tield. Every game in which he played saw him gain good yardage. Uombined with shiftiness and speed he possesses a good football head and uses it well. He has all the attributes of a good quarterback and next season should see him well on his way to football fame. XVILLIE HAGERMANN Lzff End Hagermann's work at the end position throughout the past season was practically faultless. As a defensive player T'Villie has few equals. His ability to figure out plays was uncanny. XVith his excellent head work he combined speed and aggressiveness and a remarkable knack of snagging passes. A Freshman, Hagermann easily broke into eollegiate ranks and his playing has been out- smnvling. Very little amount ol' yardage was gained around his end. ED VVILLIAMSON Right End Handieapped by lark of weight and lat-k of experience in college football, YVilliamson yet made a name for himself by playing hard every minute, and by playing the best brand of fo0tb:1l'l. Many of those who played against Jug pay him the tribute of saying that he is one of the brainiest flank men in the game. He played his position perfeetly and his tackling was hard and sure in every play. Starring on defense, he was no weakling on offense, for his blocking was flawless and he possessed an uneanny ability to receive passes. The machine is composed of Burris, Pickler, Tibbetts, Fissel, Stewart, Harris, Bul- loch tcoachj, Trucks, Hamilton, lXfIcClendon, Kloore, Cannon and Huie. The Dragons have been from time immemorial, the greatest second team in collegiate foot- ball in this state, and always have administered defeats to the Pups of Hendrix and to the Tigerettes of Ouachita. The Pups have never defeated the Dragons, and have very seldom tied them, while with the Tigerettes, it is an uncommon thing to carry away thelscalps of the Dragons on Nlonday preceding the Thanksgiving battle between their big brothers. llloveover, the Dragon llflowing lllachine takes great pride in administering overwhelming defeat to the high schools in the state, and have played many of the strongest with satisfactory results, very seldom losing a game. It is not theirs to have the limelight of the papers shed upon them, to play before the thousands of fans who crowd the games of their big brothers, to receive the coveted H at the close of the season, to be tendered banquets and feasts galore, but they must fight an obscure 1-ight, taking all the knocks they can stand from the varsity, struggling to overcome any odds that might arise, and as an incentive to better play- ing, reaching just a little nearer the coveted varsity squad positions with each hard knock and gruelling scrimmage. Here, in the ranks, is where the making of men forever goes on upon the gridiron of Haygood Field, and here in the ranks there is developed a spirit of fight and love that cannot be found anywhere else, truly, the reserves deserve their name, the Dragon lklowing Nlachine. 79 ce' 'e n ,rf ,-- ' .
