The Conquering ribe HE YEAR I024-25 brought back to the portals of Henderson-Brown a U a ,Q ll Sophomore Class whose chief virtue was in the triumphant possession of several graceful idiosyncrasies. There is little need to name them Q here, for they are time-honored attributes of this astute classy let us say that they are sophomoric and let it pass at that. Among this ensemble of peculiar and brooding traits, not one, it might be said, was ill-used. The whole, moving in majestic harmony, created a lambent flame of intelligensia, which, casting forth a luminous effulgence, set agog the brightest of the astral spheres. From the beginning the class entertained no vast and disproportionate expectations, no ambitions impossible of attaiinnent. For them there we1'e no worlds to conquer- Alexander had conquered them all. But after all, the1'e wei'e continents to be ex- plored aud mapped out, continents of new thought and wider learning. 'lloward the wider acquaintance with such worlds the class turned all its energies. The record of its accomplishments is unalterable proof of its zealous efforts and of their fruition. The dark and stormy sea of indefatigable toil bore on its translucent surface, beyond the bending horizon, sunny clad islands rich with the fruit of a virgin land. Infinite possibilities, ever widening vistas of opportunity, greet the explorer's eye, and broad, calm harbors invite the prow of his gale-wrecked vessel. The Sopho- more Lllass is comparable to such an explorer. They have sought out new shores, have traced the skein of mighty sun-blealted rivers, have journeyed resolute through the sullen gloom of waving forests and pressed on across the undulating plains whose boundless expanse offers to the eye not illiinitable leagues, but unwalled universes. ln the years to come, they who have traveled so far that, infinite distances out there on the horizon, their eyes may trace the purple shadows of far-off mountain ranges beyond whose portals lie yet other seas and other lands worthy of the pioneer. The far-off leagues of sea and land have called, Not tn adventure and Wanderlust, liut tn a heritage, a space unwalled Beyond the limits of the universe. To me they eall, the winds of fate, I XVith promise of a kingdom that may he XVinds of my fate that thicken the gale And blow my wandering bark aeross the sea. And there I'll huild me empires fairer far Than any xx ruught by brains or toil of men- l3ut see beyond the dim horizon's line A The vision of il new world yet to be. 60 F R E S H M E N From Meditation.By Ghilqni 61 Colors: Green and XVhite LOEB DUNCAN . . So, of course, the ship of enthusiasm, if allowed to drift at ? random, would waste itself upon the stormy sea and be of no benefit to the cause t ? for which it was built. Campus activities take sudden turns and routes that ' are surprising to the most sagacious, and require a steady hand to steer them aright. The detours in the campus life of Henderson-Brown has been tactfully managed and overcome this year by the president of this organization, Elmer Hood, and his co- oliicers, Doris Owens and Louie Dickinson. It is necessary to ascertain just who has been directly responsible for the valuable part of our enthusiasm, in particular. Those so-called yell leaders for the season 1924-25 were Hazel Kane, Vera Kinard, and Paul Gallowayg they ably filled their positions. VVith their earnestness and vivacity they accomplished marvels with their cohorts of cheerers. H. B. C. has got the pep and a little bit more. That little bit more might mean many things, but, brieliy, it signifies the true spirit which every sincere, peppy Hendersonian has and holds. And because ours is a school with a heart in it, and our athletes show their skill, some of the students were even prompted to assume the role of human horses Thanksgiving Day. They pulled a gigantic red and grey oval proudly across the football field. The Hoat was a marvel of beauty alone, but girls, clad in red and grey, who tossed the colors of their school to their boosters, perfected the scheme which the Pep Association had fostered. Every time the Reddies donned their togs and hit the line low and hard, that same spirit was manifested, though in a less spectacular manner than when our rivals from across the ravine were met. VVhen they fought in foreign territory, those wireless messages meant the same unfailing loyalty as the audible messages sent out to the team on Haygood Field. Variety is the spice of college life, however, so student elforts have never been limited to that form of athletics existing only in the Fall. There is a transplanting of that outdoor zeal and pep to the gymnasium where the Reddie quintet receives the whole-hearted support that the eleven had won. Then baseball and track claim their share of attention, and they get it, too- and it all issues from the same source. That inexhaustible enthusiasm also extends to the Reddi- ettes. They are important factors in this co-ed institution, and the record would not be complete without mentioning them and their splendid sportsmanship. There's Yale, and Princeton, and Cornell, Columbia, and Harvard-you know them wellg but there never was a name like Henderson. VVe are truly proud of all the winning ability she possesses-in athletics, in forensic arts, and in scholastic attainments. Be it ever so difficult, the Pep Association will rise to the demands of the occasion, and retrospection of this year's accom- plishments reveal that many obstacles have been overcome by the management of this organization. RUSSl2I.LVlI.I.E, ARKANSAS - 4-ffgq 5 , - ' ,ffm - 1 fr P 125 Review of the Season 2355- REVIEXVING the football season of '24, with its mingling of hopes and dis- ' appointments, its victories and defeats, there is much to be said in praise of the P Reddies, a team which, throughout the term of its gridiron activities, played f Y under the handicap of constant physical injuries. Yet, they fought their way QL through a hard schedule and came out with a fair share of victories to their credit. Only six letter men returned to bear the standard of Henderson-Brown through the autumn of I924. Around this nucleus was gathered a squad of husky, powerful new men, and from this combination was evolved a machine, potentially powerful, but sometimes lacking in perfect co- hesion. The Reddies began the season in Nashville, Tennessee, with the Vanderbilt Commodores. In the past, Vandy has regarded this game as a mere practice scrimmage. This time, the Com- modores were surprised and somewhat demoralized by the fury of the Reddie attack, and were forced to play an entirely defensive game. They were extremely lucky to score two touchdowns, one coming on a blocked punt. The score of I2 to o, small as it is, is not entirely descriptive of how hard fought the game really was. The next game of the season was played in Little Rock, on October 10, with the Russellville Aggies. The XVonder Boys came down to Little Rock expecting a hard fought game. This expec- tation w as fully realized. The Reddies took the lead by scoring a touchdown in the initial minutes of the game. They retained this lead until the last few minutes of play, when a break gave the Aggies the ball anti a touchdown. An unusually lucky kick for extra point after touchdown tied the score at 7 to 7, as the final whistle blew. Next, the Reljltlies met the Austin College Kangaroos on the Texans' own stamping ground. This game showed the real offensive power of the Reddie machine. The Reddies pushed the oval across twice in the first few minutes of play, but injuries and lack of men caused them to wither before the rush of the Kangaroos in the last quarter, which netted Austin College three touchdowns and victory. The Reddies celebrated their first game of the season on Haygood Field by trouncing the College of the Ozarks Mountaineers by the score of Z7 to 7. Here the powerful driving of the Reddie backfield gained almost at will. The Hendrix game, played at Little Rock October 31, was the greatest disappointment suffered by the Reddies during the season. Handicapped by a loss of me11, due to injuries, breaks in the game, fumbles, and penalties on the part of the Reddies gave Hendrix two touchdowns and a I2 to 6 victory. In consequence of the reverse suffered by the Reddies al Little Rock, the strong showing made by them against the State Teachers College a week later was doubly gratifying to the Red and G ray supporters. At ll o time did the Normal threaten the Reddie goal. Their only point came from a 40-yard drop kick, which paved the way to a I9 to 3 victory for Henderson. The following week the Reddies loosed the full fury of their attack upon the unsuspecting Panthers, of Arkansas College. The team was in good condition and worked as one man. Their efforts y vere rewarded with gl points-while the most the Panthers could annex was a cipher. The Thanksgiving Day struggle between the Reddies and their ancient foes, the Ouachita Tigers, a game hailed as the classic of Arkansas football, was one of the cleanest, hardest, and most spectacular game Acl of a long series between the two rivals. ever aerial attack by the Tigers gave the Reddies the small end of a I2 to o score. 126 Louis SMITH . .
