Smiling Jimmie was one of Dan lN'IcGugin's famous quarterbacks at Vanderbilt. His name is synonymous with Reddie pep, and his brand of coaching is known throughout Arkan- sas and the South. TURNER DELONEY, D Center and Captain MINERAL SPRINGS, ARK. Dee will be back with us next year, and promises to be even a greater sensa- tion as the 'Kfightingest line-man in Arkansas. , -Li 1 . JOHN SUMMERVILLE, Cliff-ken Fulllmt-A BENTON, ARK. Chicken's knowledge of football, his tremendous driving power, and his ability to back up the line were the talk of the school. His brilliant play- ing won for him the position of all- state fullback, and captain of the team for '23. MILTON YyOUNG, Illini Illanager of the Team GURDON, ARK. Among his other numerous duties, scholastic and social, llflutt ably han- dled the business affairs during the past season. However, he will soon transfer his business training to other fields when he receives both degrees this year. I' 'Q-I - D .,, ,M gg-. SAGE IICLEAN, l.7.v111'y Left End CADDO GAP, ARK. Sage has played with the varsity for four seasons. No Reddie was more consistent or more versatile in his playing. For three years he served as a hard-hitting and hard-tackling halt- back, and was chosen for this berth on the all-state team of l2I. How- ever, he was shifted to an end position this year when Coach Jimmie needed a good man to H11 the place. Sage leaves a place that will be mighty hard to fill. BILL l'l0W'ELL, Sn1ilin' Bill Right TarHr KEO, ARK. VVhere the fight was thickest, there Bill was seen to be. A serious injury to his arm in the middle of the season kept him out of the big games, but he managed to enter the Thanksgiving battle where he upheld his reputation as a demon in the line. Bill is another who has served his time, and leaves a gap hard to fill. b v .Sf t JIEVVEL RICLEAN, 'fBu!Z Lrft Ifrzlfbnrfl' Capno GAP, ARK. Bulls fourth and last season was marked by brilliant playing. His clever headwork and his ability as a broken field runner made him one of the most valuable men on the team and a source of constant fear to his opponents. HOR.'XCE XVILLIAMSON, Il aMo ' Right Gunn! XVALDO, ARK. Horace is one who has risen from the ranks. After two seasons with the Dragons he was unanimously pro- moted to a varsity guard position, which he filled with much credit. Judging from past performances, he will prove a valuable asset to the line next year. 6' ,. Last season he was kept out of the game on account of a broken arm, and in the early part of this season he sustained a broken ankle in scrimmage. His worth was recognized, however, when letters were awarded. CIUXUDE Totsox, Bill Right Y1!1t'X'lF LEw1srn.l,E, ARK. Hill is another graduate from the ranks of the Dragons, whose company he kept during his Hrst year in college. This season his ability was recognized by the award of a tackle position on the varsity, thus conferring on him the distinction ot winning letters in base- ball, basketball and football in two years. He promises to be a strong factor in next year's line. Romim' Tnoxrxssox. Sli-my Lrff Yllllilft' 1hRKAlJIil,I'llI.X, ARK. Sleepy is one of the two first-year men to win a regular position in the Red- die lineup. His brilliant showing was cut short by his suffering a broken leg in the latter part of the Hendrix game. Although he was out for the rest of the season he won his I-I. He will prove a mainstay in the line - 1 ot 23. HAI. Noawoop, Righf Turtle Lockesnckc, ARK. Klerry Hal hails from Lockesburg, where many Reddies have been pro- duced. Hal is valued as a speedy and a scrappy lineman. lVhen a surprise attack from the forward position was needed, Hal was right there to de- liver the goods. He is another de- pendable for the coming season. P DALLAS DALTON, Pezcee Lefl Guard STEPHENS, ARK. Pewee hails from where they grow 'em big. His prospects for winning a letter in his first year were blighted by a serious injury to his ankle, but this season he came through in grand style. He, with lVilliamson, formed the Pillars of Hercules on each side of the fighting center. FLETCHER YOUNG, Fletch QLlI1I'f!'7'IlI1L'k GURDON, ARK. Fletch ended his career this past sea- son as a Reddie. His educated toe proved a valuable asset in many emer- gencies, and his consistent punting was an invaluable aid in winning many games. Despite his handicap in size, he won his H for three successive years. He has the unique distinction of being the only man to win letters in football, baseball, basketball and track. COLLINS EDWARDS, Pug Right PIIllfbllCk VALIANT, OKLA. Pug is a scrapper from Oklahoma who for two years has held down the position of a plunging halfback. No man of his weight could hit harder, nor was anyone a surer tackler in the pinches. ERSKINE ORIXIE, Er-L, Right End Huoo, OKLA. Erk is another Oklahoma find, and is the second first-year man to gain his letter in football this season. His playing was consistent, and marked by constant progress, indicating that the coach would have no worry over the position of right end next season. ri e . .v . l s ,, - -ij, ,. f -, Y' 1-- i., l'lERRI.-XX CLEKIENTS. GEORGE XVORKAIAN. Suriv, Guard ARKADELPHIA, IXRK. Susie is a player who has persisted un- der difficulties. Being crowded from the regular lineup this season by big- ger men, he became a substitute guard who could always be relied upon. XVILBUR XVHITTHORNE, Red Quarter and Ifrzlfbmvf BENTON, ARK. Red is the second Contribution from the town up the road to this year's squad. Although light in weight, he was heavy in punch, his specialty con- sisting in his uncanny knack of side- J. i stepping his opponent, and twisting through a broken field. HE.-XRIX l'I,-XRMON, Taffy C?llIl!'l'l'l'b!It'k EL Domino, ARK. Toppy struggled for two years in the ranks of the Dragons before achieving the coveted UH. He was handi- capped by injuries during the early part of the season, but by Thanksgiv- ing had rounded into excellent condi- tion. In that game, being called upon to run the team, he proved himself to be the End of the season. He shows great promise as a Held general for the season of '23. THORPE PIANIILTON, llrzlfbfzrl- lVlCCRORY, ARK. Thorpe is another product of the Dragon mowing machine, in which he gained distinction as a broken field runner during his first year. Having been deprived of the privilege of play- ing in enough games to win his letter, he proved a valuable reserve to the regular backfield. SS 1 fx as 'Yi Ei Q2 FP 1 P 'o Q i 3 CW ,3 Football of 1922 'o'0 552 'fe, WHEN the school year of 1922-23 began, hopes of a brilliant season for B' all gg the Reddies ran high. Better material had not been gathered on the X Q55 Henderson-lfrown athletic field in many a year. 'lihirteen letter men , 5 were back. A spirit of optimism prevailed. The first game, however, chilled the heart of even the most optimistic fan. Something was wrong. ln a miserable game on the home field, September 25, the Reddies blundered to a defeat of I2 to O by the Southeast Oklahoma Normal. At once Coach l-laygood began to remedy the evident defects of teamwork with gratifying results. On October 7, in their game with Vanderbilt at Nashville, the reorganized Reddies exceeded the expectations of their most ardent supporters. They held the mighty Commodores 7 to 0 in the first half, and we1'e defeated 33 to O only after being battered down in the last quarter. ln the third game of the year, on Friday, October 13, the Reddies lost to llissis- sippi College at Pine Bluff by the score of 3 to O from a field goal in the second quar- ter. But they made a greater number of first downs, and registered more yardage. On October 20, however, the Reddies easily defeated the College of the Ozarks at Clarksville, 42 to o-the first association game of the season. Friday, October 27, proved a red-letter day in the athletic calendar, for at Arkadel- phia on that date a double victory was scored over the old rivals from Hendrix. In the morning the Dragons gloriously trounced the Bullpups, 26 to O, and in the after- noon the varsity swamped the Bulldogs, 39 to 0. In the next engagement, on November 3, the Reddies showed a reversal of form, and donated a game by 34 to O to L. P. I. at Ruston. On their second trip to Louisiana, however, they showed a better brand of football. At Shreveport, November II, they battled the powerful Centenary machine to a scoreless draw during the Hrst half, but, giving down under the assaults of their heavier and frequently changed opponents, lost thc game, 28 to O. On November 2I the widely heralded lVonder Boys from Russellville came down like the wolf on the fold and won a thrilling contest by a field goal in the last minutes of play. But the Reddies had the edge in the yardage gained. Last came the great Thanksgiving game with the Ouachita Tigers. As usual, the struggle was the hardest fought of the year. ln this game also the Reddies made a greater number of first downs, but they were forced to swallow a bitter defeat of S to O through a safety and a touchdown in the first quarter. Although the record of the season showed but two victories and six defeats, it was not one to be ashamed of. A heavier schedule had never been tackled by a Reddie team. All in all, the team of 1922 will rank as one of the strongest in the history of the college. F7 Tonsox, Capfain BASKETBALL SQUAD BASK E We BALLS! REDDIETTES 90 Baseball Last year's team was composed of some of the best players that have ever worn a Red and Gray uniform. The loss of such men as Stinnette, Captain l22Q Taylor, Courtney, Edwards, Rogers, N. Smith and Rowland will greatly handicap Coach Haygood in his efforts to rebuild the team, but the presence of F. Young, Captain '23, Tolson, Hamilton, Rush, and Harmon is very encouraging this season. However, a large number of new men have reported for practice, and competition for positions will be keen. At this writing Bell, Cobb, Thomasson, Dalton, Orme, Hardman, Atchley, and Blewster are making a good showing and undoubtedly most of these will win a position. The only serious weakness seems to be in the pitching stall. The several state records were shat- tered. Sidney Page, captain of the team, broke the record of the mile run by several seconds. Other men winning first places were: Rush, two-mile run, Crawford, half- mile run, H. Baker, pole vault. Among those winning second places were: Smith, pole vault, VVhitthorne, high hurdles, Norwood, low hurdles, VVilliamson, shot put and discus. Page is the only letter man missing this year and the prospects for a win- ning team are brighter than they have been for years. Smith, captain this season, is expected to win his share of the honors, VVilliamson has a good chance to win in the shot put and discus throw, Baker should repeat his feat, Whittho1'xie and Norwood are due to win in the hurdles, Crawford undoubtedly will triumph again in the half-mile run, and it is generally conceded that Rush will break the record for the two-mile run this year because he did so in practice last year, besting the time by 30 seconds. Being sick three days preceding the meet, he was nat- urally out of condition and ran entirely on his nerve, winning by a very comfortable margin. He will probably run the mile race also this year. At this writing nothing definite can be determined concerning the abilities of the new candidates aspiring for honors in the meet this season. 92 O 6 O wan OLga,ni5afi0nS 5 5 r i. l, 'L Us 'v ful 9- The Y.
