ALL YH KE ILDING MAIN BU G 46' 'Ui'- fir CU AWRL5 .imrofjf 0 j IL 4 ,elf 0404 owiv THE FACULTY CwuYLfru m Q, I M lyxh . af,-, 9 , Uribe lass nf 1908 li have been cantioneil thus by the wisest man the ages have X known, l1oast not thyself of iovmorrow, for thou knowest not what a tlav may bring forth. l.et another man praise thee anfl not thy own lips. .Xml yet we are going to follow the beaten path antl .lisregartl this atlvice in two ways, first by speaking of the future with its bright prospects. anal seconcl by relating' our own history. lYe tlo this not because we clo not think that this is goofl atlvice, but because we think that after we have taken a flegree in llentlerson College we will he wiser by far than Solomon in all his glory ever hopecl to be, lYe prefer to write our own biography because we flo not think that any other one will give ns justice. The hrst victim of greatness whom we shall see is Kliss Lou Clark. .Xlthough words may fail us ancl our pen may tremble when we face the insur- mountable obstacle of recorcling the qleefls of one so illustrious. our earnest DYHXCY is that the guartlian angel of prose may guizle our pen. liorn on the ocean of joy, rockerl in the craflle of the mleep, rearerl on the imposing beach where balmy breezes blow, the wontler is how she eoultl leave her happy home at lleirne on the Coast and cast her lot with such a quiet anal unassuming class of people as those who infest the halls of Henrlerson, XYe may safely juilge that she will either be a missionary to some tlesert anrl uninhabitel islancl, or cast her lot in a nunnery. Surely she will never treatl the path in which wretched man has set his foot. Her opinion of men is that they are all green. XVhen we were calletl upon to write about Miss Kathleen Gooclga-ine, at tirst we refused, not because we thought ourselves incompetent but because we clifln't have time, However, after being persuatlecl that we were the only ones worthy of such an arrluous task. we acceptetl with pleasure. XYe can say much about her past but this volume will holtl only a small part of her future, for there is a 'young gentleman of this school in love with this fair laqly an4l every one knows what love-stories mean. The conclusion of the whole matter is this, They were marriecl and livecl happily ever afterwarrlsf' llut quite often this is not true, for all do not live like the picture we see. llut we are sure that this will be a happy union, for no one who knows her can picture a man with heart so black, so base, so voirl of conscience, who coulcl not live in peace with such a one as she. 'XYe know that she will meet with unbounclecl happiness upon the high- way of life. lt has always been a custom of the lnrlians, antl is fast becoming that of the whites, to choose as their rulers ancl aclvisors the olwler anQl more experi- enced men of their race. XYe have triecl to keep abreast of the times and have chosen, and chosen well, Nr. .X. tl, Grayrlon to act as our chief. We have selected him to guicle and tlirect our footsteps over the stormy paths of college life because he had more experience before we made our entrance upon the stage in the clrama of life than we have harl since that time. llis form gracetl the halls of Henmlerson long before llenjamin Franklin memorizetl the multiplication table. He is a gentleman of the prehistoric type, wise in council. courtly' in society, stern in commanfl. 'llhrough the journey of his life we are absolutely certain that his path will be strewn with tokens of love ancl gooclwill ancl that he will go to his rewartl as he has gone through school. On llowery bells of ease. 14 If worthier hands than ours had attempted to paint a picture of one so fair as Miss Maud Harper, they would have succeeded only in part. lint since the task is ours we will rise nobly to the occasion and present to your optics a vague idea of this lovely maiden. XYe have sharpened our wits on the grindstone of knowledge to do homage to this Louisiana llelle. Un a summer's day in the month of May fortune smole one broad lingering sznile upon the home of DV. Harper. Miss Maud is the maiden with the smile that won't come off. XXI- hope that life will be one long lovely smile to her. Michael .Xngelo has come and gone. Miss Harper has come midst loud applause. She has not yet gone and quite likely never will, but when she shall have painted her masterpiece, dear old Mike will be thrown into the ashbarrel with the has-beens. ller future, like her past, will be many times brighter than the milky way. If beauty be made the test of knowledge our class-mate. Nr. Vernon lean. is easily the wisest student in our midst. XYbether beauty is the proper standard bv which to judge -wisdom or not we do not know, but this we do know, that in his case this fact is true. Profound utterances upon all momentous questions of the day pour from his mouth continually like molasses from the bung-hole of the universe. VVhere he came from nobody knows, where he treads the paths of research and discovery nobody goes. I-le is small of stature, but it is a universal truth, as we learn from Psychology. that good stuff is always done up in small packages. The walls of dear old llenderson have never inclosed one who had a clearer and more definite knowledge of Psychology than this noble American youth. In class, facts about this great science roll from his mouth like the wild rush of the cataract flown the steep declivities of the mountain-side. From present indications Mr, Jean will be a medical doctor of that class who say Throw physic to the dogs, but through the long lane of life he will always have our sympathy, On a beautiful spring morning the home of Klr. and Mrs. Ketchem was brightened by a dream of beauty, a beautiful specimen, from the flower garden of humanity, and ever since that time the loveliness of that spring morning has been symbolized by the life of this fair maiden. lllherever she goes she carries the sunshine of goodwill and unselfisbness. .Xnd yet she has been unfair to a certain extent by making a special case of one young man in this institution. lt seems to us that he receives more of the sunlight of love and affection than any one human being is entitled to. However, we are inclined to believe that when the shadows have a little longer grown, when the present crisis has reached its climax, our present friend and schoolmate will brighten the world with her kindness and will become the benefactress of the human race. XVe long for the time to come when she shall have reached the zenith of her glory, and we can all say with the learned Ben johnson. That lady was a class-mate of mine. In every age, in every clime. it matters not what the occupation or sur- roundings are, there are those who tower above the common herd. So it is in study where Miss Mamie Locke so easily surpasses the common mob of students. Since her childhood days, when she wandered in the meadows among butter- cups and clover blossoms and chased the butterdy from flower to flower, when she waded in the laughing waters of the mountain stream and played with the fishes in the rippling brook, she has ever worked onward and upward with this one thought uppermost. Hlfnowledge. knowledge. get knowledge. jXnd thus she towers to the sublime heights of learning and pours out wisdom on class like sunshine from a summer sky. Her mission on this terrestrial 'ball is to proclaim the rights of woman, to prove to the world that woman is intellectually man's equal, and to demonstrate to the ages that man has no monopoly on learning. 15 Panhandle Pete has said 'Z-Xll the world loves a lover. The class of naughty eight takes great pleasure in joining the world in loving its fellow member, Mr. blames Mehaffy. llorn in love, reared in love, fed on love, and surrounded by love. we predict that he will die in love. We voice Thomas Carlyle's sentiments when we say. Pat Mehaffy is the greatest ladies' man the centuries have yet produced. lt gives us pain to think what is and what might have been. Meliaffy might have lived one thousand years ago when knighthood was in llower. lYe regret very much that our conscience prompts us to say that our dear friend Mehaffy is just one thousand years too late. Henderson College does not carry a stock of hearts large enough for a man of his caliber. Like Alexander the Great he has conquered all the hearts in our quiet little college, and according to his room-mate cries at night because there are no more hearts to break. The proper time for our friend to have acted on life's stage would have been as Dr. Maulrlin has so happily said. ln days of old. when knights were bold. .Xnd the price of coal was high, .-X maiden fair, with peroxide hair. Said 'Love me. or I die'. lYe have now reached the sublime height of beauty and intelligence in our narrative and when the blooming countenance of Miss Ruth Pipkin is flashed upon the canvas of public scrutiny we all take off our hats and stop to do homage to the first lady of the class of IOOS. Her childhood days were passed among the most happv surroundings which our imagination can picture. She was indeed fortunate in having a number of brothers and sisters to guide and direct her footsteps. .Xfter she left the shelter of her parental domicile to seek adventure in a boarding school. she was fortunate enough to have a young man take the place of her brothers and look after her welfare. He would doubtless like to have the task for life. but alas! poor lad. your hopes are in vain. For this maiden fair has delved too far into the rights of woman, and drunk too deep from the waters of woman's importance. Her future lies before her. not sur- rounded by masculine attention but bv women bending their knees before her and seeking leniencv at her hands. lYoe unto the man who crosses her path. Such is the result of higher education for women. 'A lYe now pass from the sublime to the ridiculous. l am Sir Oracle, when l ope mv lips let no dog bark. ll'hen Mr. l aul Shell Powell. our class-mate. opens his lips there is no possible chance for others to speak. He was born when conversation was at the high water mark and has ever been the foremost social lion of these regions. ftinong the fair sex he has no equal, but a sly old fox is he. llc wires in and wires out and keeps the ladies all in doubt. He moves the wagon of thought in Henderson College along the rough and rocky road of learning. lfverywhere. at all times, he dashes brilliant sparks of knowl- edge to Freshmen and gives instruction to Seniors. lt is a burning shame that ill fortune falls to men of such promising futures. llve regret that we have to relate on these pages what an awful calamity. what an awful end. awaits one of such great promise. lt is painfully evident, as it has been ten thousand times before. that this youth. the llower of manhood. is destined to be wrecked in the voyage of life upon the barren and treacherous rocks of matrimony. Statistics fail to relate the time and place of Miss Mary Simpson's birth. lint that she was horn we are almost sure. During her childhood days. wlnch are far removed from the memory not only Of us, but of our honored president. Mr. 16 A. O. Graydon, she was led by her parents to the oracle. ln response to their prayer the oracle gave forth the following utterance: No matrimony for you until you hnd a beautiful man. Now she runs up and down the campus, the streets of Arkadelphia, and through the study hall like Diogenes with his lantern, hunting for a beautiful man. Unless she gives up the vain search, we predict for her nothing but old maidenhood. lf she has not already reached this periol of life we offer her our most hearty congratulations. lint the end she is trying to attain is like a rainbow, the idle dream of the queen of dreamcrs. Speaking of dreamers brings us to Miss Xlaye Turrentine. She has made a study of the mystery of dreams, and since she is a dreamiof beauty, it is perfectly natural that she shoulil have made a success. ln her youth she dreamed from early morn till dewy eve. llihen a few :nore years had passed she began to dream of nature and to direct her thoughts toward the woods She reached such a high state of perfection in these fields of thought that sho personified nature and gave it names like Dearwood. lndeed she is a veritable nature fakir. XYhat she will Finally grind out from the held of knowledge. tiine only will tell. There are some who have the elements of a noble character so concealed in them, that we never know what great truth will next fall from their lips. Such a one is our class-mate, Nliss Turrentine. But who is that handsome dog with the athletic shoulders and that grace- ful form? That is Duckie Peabody, alias Dudley Tull, ex-quarter back on the Henderson team. The history of such a character as his is too black to stain the fair pages of such a sacred volume. It is a source of regret that statistics have forced us to place his name on a few of these fair pages. O Statistics, what an awful blood-curflling monster art thou! .Xs for the future we hate to speak, but stern duty demands this of us. llis picture will grace the rogues' gallery of every police court in our great republic. The only reason we have allowed Duckie a berth among us is because he has the wonderful power of appropriating all superfluous hearts. He is known as the man with a heart like a trolley car, always room for one more. Therefore it is plain 'to all that he is a comforter to all love-sick maidens in the hour of sore distress and in the time of need. This is his one redeeming feature. There is one peculiarity about his criminal face, that is, the smile he always wears, but XYilliam Cullen Shakespeare has truthfully said in his little ballad entitled Ten Nights in a llar-room, or 'XYho Drove Tacks in the llaby's Face. Une may smile and smile and be a villain. There is one characteristic much desired and appreciated in women and so seldom seen that when such a phenomenon presents itself to our eyes we stand dumb-founded. There is one and only one of the class of Ioo8 in whom this admirable trait resides. That happy, yea, thrice happy maid is our fellow student, Miss Nettie Wihitesiile. She was horn when conversation was at a premium and is a walking advertisement of that old maxim, f'Silence is Colden . The remarkable trait of which we speak and which our classmate has so happily attained, even soaring to the heavens in her fame, is the faculty of being in a state of mind which is not bubbling over with empty conversation. For any person of such high accomplishments and possessed in addition of such infinite knowledge, success awaits the plucking like a ripe and juicy peach ready to fall into the lap of mother earth. Thus encleth the chapter. ltlanv things have been left unsaid which we might well have mentioned. If we have said too much, time only will tell. Misses Elsie DeVoe, Eula Bussell and Norma Tucker, Mrs. Harper is taking a Post Graduate Course in music. Miss Alva Tarrant, voice teacher, has just returned from her trip lo Europe, during which, on her return, she was shipwrecked a11d tloatetl around on the ocean eight days. yet came out on dry land, with renewed vigor, singing, 'tFly away, Kentucky Babe, Fly away to Rest. Miss Beryl Henry. successor to Carrie .-X. Nation. will make her last tour through the South, deliverng her special lectures on Tempe-r' nee, this fall. Don't fail to hear tl her at this place, October .2oth. tHere is an example of the fruits of Expression, 191181 The bell ringing, I put' down my paper and we11t to answer the call. .X little fellow i11 uniform handed me a telegram. She also told me that Mittie Grace Illahan had married a French Nobleman and was tl1e star in the leading circle of French society. Coming out of this Kitten Nursery I heard the shrill cry Peanuts and popcorn. five cents a sack. The voice sounded very much like one of our distinguished orators of '08 Going in the direction of this ery, I came upon a little popcorn stand, stationed at the corner, where, seated on a three-legged stool, Guy VV. Holmes was poring over his favorite selection, An Old Sweetheart of Mine, laying it aside every now and then to remind the passersby again, that he still had popcorn and peanuts for sale. He told me that Lillian Brown had given tip her study of piano music and had joined the Salvation Army, being the captain of its hand, and that Lillian Strong was the prima donna of this associatio11. Going on down the street, I went into a book store, and was looking over the titles, when I noticed one, How to Express Yourself and How to Act on All Occasions, by Bessie Grace Pearcy. I picked it up and opening it, I noticed tl1is one place especially: To girls: Dear friends, whenever a 'guy' proposes, nrcier, under any circumstances, reject him. I committed such a rash act once, and am now suffering the penalty of living the lonesome and retired life of a writer. Reading from the DeQueen Bee, I learned tl1at Ruford Turrentine, a former citizen of that town, but now pastor of the Skeeter Valley circuit, while' going to till his appointment, his mule, becoming frightened, had run away, and he not being able to stay with his old pal, was thrown off and his nose dislocated, thus spoiling for life his former handsome countenance. Little Rock Gazette tSpeciall March 5th, 1918: This city was awakened to a new realization of affairs last evening by a thrilling appeal on Woman's Rights, delivered by Miss Stella Holland, who is now arousing the United States with her grand ideas ex- pounded in her eloquent talks. After her great speech she favored her hearers with a touching ballad, Love Me and the NVorld is Mine. CSigned.J JAMES TNIEHAFFY. They are the faculty and the means nothing more than a mischievous llenderson cadet and an Edison l'lionograpli. On the pinot' science teacher the shock was the greatest for he was first to hear and realize the truth and in a way he was partly to blame. For an experiment in Physics he was planning a surprise to his class by recording for them one of our grand old Southern melodies as sting by our Southern Male Quartette. lYith this purpose in view he put a clean disk on the machine and with all in readiness started down the grand stairway. lVhe'n he came to the last landing he discovered some of the hoys in the hall and so, carefully placing lns hurden out of sight on the stairs, he took a careful survey of the hall and then sauntered into the office. About this time the young cadet appeared and his watchful eye spied the machine, Naturally curiosity pulled him down the stairs and he saw in a minute that the disk was blank and everthing ready for action Quick as a Hash his brain was in action too and his eyes were fairly dancing a jig. Upon the window sill went the machine and tick went the small lever. ln a few minutes all was over and everything was back in its place, Even the boy was seriously pondering over a geometry proposition when Mr. Mitchell came from the oflice, Perhaps he stayed longer than he intended but the hall was clear and he and his project glided noselessly into the society hall where the Quartet was waiting. The record was made and a splendid one it promised to be, and in his dream that night he could see the bright. pleased faces of the Freshmen and hear the familiar strains of My Old Kentucky Home. llnt sleep would not have been so refreshing if he could have seen a gray-clad Iigure with a small round box in one hand slip into the laboratory and out again without a sound and still hearing apparently the same burden with him. Two-thirty came at last and when the class was seated he gave a brilliant lecture on the progress of science. Then to illustrate he walked over to the Phoriograph and for the second time in its late history we again hear that click. Camphor:-Smelling Salts 2- XYater:-lVhat do we hear now? XYQ had guise three thousand ui ' ' 4'lll:ll ' that is the fact that one leaving the earth with Ilhere is one peculiarity almut au .t . ,, , ' ' ' ' ' l' Hr. Mitchell mis mouth open swells up and loses the power of ljlfiltlllllg, Ll'1fQ1tL1l1fltQ5 68 did this and when we had reached such a stupendous height he resembled the walking advertisement of a Dutch wet goods emporium. Dr. Klauldin conveyed him to the com- pressed air chamber and gave him the usual treatment for iinpraessario of the lungs. ln exactly four seconds he was returned to the deck safe and sound in body but not in soul. In the short time of three minutes and seven seconds we had reached the enormous height of twenty-three thousand miles which the great poet NVilliam Cullen Shakespeare has so happily styled in the well-known saying That is going some. XVhen the enormous height of iifteen thousand leagues and fifteen inches is reached a novice is affected in the most peculiar manner. Prof. Mitchell began to act like a man with weeds in his roof-garden but l was told that he only had hats in this think-tank. At first he began to i'un around the deck like an old hen after a grasshopper. Then he made a dash for the propeller where the air-sick always go. The iirst stop was made at'Saturn where Ed preached a sermon. Ile was so enthusiastically received by the inhabitants that they took otif one of old Saturn's rings and gave it to Prof. Mitchell. the conservative member of the party. NVhen we reached Uranus we inet Prof. Proctor returning from Mars on the University of Chicago observation ship. He had fallen in the Qleomargarine river and caught three fishes in a most startling manner. He came to the surface with one in each hand and one in his mouth. He said that he didu't like the climate and country up there, although he was offered a position as plowmau on the farm of King jake the Great at a salary of twenty sous per. which would be about 3525.00 in our money. He wanted to go back to Mars with us, but Dr. Mauldin turned him down with these gentle words, Nay, Nay, Pauline, we can't see you for the dust. After wishing Prof. Proctor a prosperous voyage, which consumed twice as inuch of our valuable time as our trip, we left Uranus and sailed on to Mars, encountering many schools of air-lishes and aerial monsters. The most laughable incident of the voyage was the captivation of Prof. Mitchell by a lacoon, an air iish resembling a mermaid. She is perfectly harmless, but he was ignorant of this fact. She spied us coming from afar and became infatuated with him. NVhen she began to make' love to him his face turned deathly red and he tried to explain. but she only said, Hush while you can for after 11 while you can't. Then bracing up. he took courage and asked her if she loved him, whereupon she replied, t'No, not at all, hardly. The voyage back was dull. Prof. Mitchell was in the cabin dead to the world and the lights on Mars had all been extinguished. We came down so fast that we Hew around the world three times before we could land. NVhen we did step from the Luna to terra firma we were greeted by Prof. Proetor's pet rattlesnake, Bill, who raised nis tail and rattled that touching little ballad entitled, XVhen we part let us all go together. Prof. Mitchell. in an interview with the Star reporter on Mars. said that he was highly pleased and that he intended to return recently with his wife. The ,game was rather slow on both sidcs but was hard fought. Not until the last live minutes of play did we succeed in crossing tlteir goal line, ln the very lirst game of the season we played a team which outweighed lla at least Iifteen pounds and the score was 5 to o in our favor, which goes ltr -how that spirit is rather to be Chosen than great weight. 1 The next victim was Ouachita College of this city. They were led tu the slaughter on Henderson Field on the twenty-eighth of tlctolwer. The game was hotly contested from beginning to end, hut at no time after the Iirst down was the game in doubt. This game was played to the tune of 2: to 6 in favor inf lleiidi-rsttn. On the night of the twenty- eighth the Henderson team was given a reception at the Young Ladies' llome of tluaehita College. After the game the team was entertained with a reception. Again, as in nineteen hundred six. we were fortunate in having scheduled the hardest game of the season for Thanksgiving Day. The battle was fought on llendcrsnn Field and lasted tifty minutes. If the usher attempts to find a seat for you be sure to let him run up to the front of the house while you take a birds-eye view of the audience. Then take a seat on the opposite side of the house from that which the usher assigns you. After he passes, call him back and ask him if he has a program or if that is Miss Talk-a-Lot over on the other side. After you have been comfortably seated, hnd a friend in another part of the building, go over to her seat and ask someone to move so you can sit by her. In doing this don't fail to trouble the usher. Talk about your friends first and get rid of all the gossip you have stored away, then trouble the usher in some way. If there are any reserved seats be sure to find them and when the usher says, Beg pardon, madam, but these seats are reserved, give him the icicle stare for about two minutes and ten seconds, then ask if the one next to it is reserved. Then puff up and mumble something about the College and the usher. After her selection is linished and the usher starts up with Howers, if you see him in time get in his way and when he comes back ask who sent them. Take special pains to be ready, if some accident should occur, to laugh and make yourself conspicuous. lf you should embarrass the performer, laugh louder. if not, pout.
