Successes and failures are all part of our lives but we hope to you, through our production of the 1969-1970 Panther, our most rewarding and fondest memories. Our time and effort would be considered well spent if we knew you found in our yearbook a sample of the feelings we have for Henderson Institute. A large THANK YOU goes to our parents, teachers, coun- selors, principal and the countless others who helped us to climb another flight of steps toward our goal. We hope you will enjoy our production of the 1969-'70 SOUL Panthers. Milton H. Brodie 'C off 5011 W ffe press. As Co-editor of the 1969-1970 Panther I have found much pleasurein reproducing all the events that have filled our memory cup to its maximum capacity. It is difficult, even impossible to preserve all of the fun filled moments of our senior year. Along with the other members of the Annual Staff, l have managed to cap- ture a portion of the memories that will remain with us, not only on these pages, but also in our hearts. We have sacrificed many hours inpre- paring this book. We trust that it will be one of the best in the history of Henderson Institute. Your graduation takes place during a very confusing time in our history. We are living in the midst of great social change accompanied by rebellion and militancy. Many baf- fling problems confront us. You will have to find answers to many questions and determine many courses of action to take in regard to morals, values, goals and associations with others. The destiny of our land rests upon your shoulders and will be determined by you. Henderson Institute has attempted to provide for you many experiences which will enable you to realize your potential and to make decisions which will lead to the creation of that type of society which will insure wholesomeness, happiness and well-being. Let us hope that our efforts have not been in vain. Go forth from here and make of yourselves, men and women, of whom anyone will be justly proud. Again I say, Congratulations and best wishes to you all. Very truly yours, 41:5 .af 5 as is 3 E5 1..3..:....:1:,--Tg.--.3 --:-Q :Qs I I 1 5 5 ': : : 'S ' Z - .. 5 5 : ff 3 13 X - 1 0 o '-1 1-Q i J . Now, as you meet the challenge of alarger world community, it is our fondest hope that you have laid well the foundation upon which to build a finer life: that you have formed ideals toward which you will move with faith, courage, and determination: and that you have dedicated yourselves to some worthy task that you will make the lot of mankind better. Agriculture ur up eruzls or Dear Seniors: It is with profound pleasure that I congratulate members of the graduating class of 1970 upon the successful completion of their high school careers. You have reached an important milestone in your lives. Hopefully, you have been provided educational opportunities that will enable you to face life's challenges with courage, serenity, enthusiasm, confidence, understanding, faith and hope. Remember that the world is a learning laboratory. Continue to learn and to grow intellectually. As you move into our democratic, complexed society as responsible citizens, and strive to make a worthwhile contribution, it will be wise to ascribe to the philosophy suggested by Daniel Starch who stipulates that one should: 1. Do unto others as you would that they should do unto you. 2. Know thyself. 3. Anything that is worth doing at all is worth doing well. 4. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. 5. The great essentials of happiness are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. 6. The only way to have a friend is to be one. 7. As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. 8. Knowledge is power. 9. Action speaks louder than words. 10. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You have my best wishes for success, good health and happiness! Bter S. Q11 Warfzh Buffer E229 171175 CC ave U7 Zream 7 7 I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true mean- ing of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal. I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state swelter- ing with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character. I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and girls will be able to join hands with little white girls and white boys and walk together as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plains, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This is our hope. This is the faith with which I return to the South. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountains of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring, And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania. Let freedom Let freedom But not only Let freedom ring from the snow- capped Rockies of Colorado. ring from the curvacious peaks of California! that! Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! ring from every hill and mole hill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring. When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of that old Negro spiritual Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty, we are free at last!
