Spencer, former teacher and present principal of Henderson Institute, 'we ,proudly dedicate the 1969 edition of the PANTHER. For many eiiucsational, civic, 5-and religious affairs. We, the class of 1969, representing all chfasses that have graduated during your tenure, take this opportunity to thank you. Your guidance and understanding not only in your vocation but also in your avocations have earned you a place of highest esteem in all our hearts. A great deal of time and effort have been put into the production of this annual in order to make it the best yet! Many of you have reached the culmination of your formal education: may your school years serve you well in your chosen career. For you who plan to further your education in college, you have a strong foundation on which to base your future. To the underclassmen: These are your most valuable and productive years. Do not permit yourself to stray in the wrong direction or become entangled in the wrong group. As you reminisce through the pages of this 1968-69 annual, the Panther, it is hoped that you will recognize the significance of a most wonderful and profitable year. If you, the stu- dent body, the faculty, and the administration are pleased with the production of this book of memories, then our endeavors shall be rewarded. MARTHA FULLER, Editor 1-me f .r V- ,, r r' X ,A fm If Q11-Giniwf 11-Ghitur as message: 1- ,- fnqe- 'J These are the young years the fruitful years when time means only the day after tomorrow. These are the years of tender dreams, but youth is brutal as well as tender and youth is reality as well as a dream. ln a short time your 69 Panther will lose its immediate appeal, but later it will be your key to reminiscence. Re- membrance is a yearbook's purpose, the GQ Panther serves well only if it brings back happy memories of our years at Hen- derson Institute. The Annual Staff pauses amid the wonders of life and the magic of science, to bring forth these golden moments of the past. We will travel the paths of achievement, fun, beauty, and skill through this yearbook. Do not remember your 69 Panther for what it costs, remember it for what it will be worth to you inthe future. The bus started on a fair September morning in the year of 1964. The road was bumpy but we were determined to make the trip with the help of our wonderful chaperonesg Mrs. G. R. Darensburg, Mrs. E. B. Engram, Mrs. B. H. Reid, Mr. L. Harris, Mr. E. J. Cash, and Mr. H. L. Cushenberry. After a year on the road as Junior High students and a rest period, we resumed our journey as Freshmen. The ride lifted our spirits and inspired us to continue the trip. The bus came to a rest area and we rested for the summer. The doors opened again and our dedicated chaperones boarded the bus: Mrs. V. J. Alston, Miss S. L. Perry, Mrs. M. S. Buliuck, Mr. C. W. Brown, Mr. R. Ford, Mrs. E. E. Thompson and Mrs. E. L. Adams. New students from New Hope, Kit- trell, Carver, and Oak Grove boarded the bus behind the chaperones. After everyone became acquainted, the motor started and we continued our journey as sophomores, being involved in many activities. The trip was enjoyable but we decided to stop for another rest period. After the short rest, we had to make a decision as to whether we wished to continue because we knew we were making progress. The trip was interesting but some of us were becoming tired and restless. They were the ones who got off before we reached our destination. We tried to convince them to stay but most of them had made up their minds to stop at this point. The majority of us, because of our ambition and desire to succeed, continued the trip as Juniors. We stopped for our final rest period which seemed very short because we wanted to get started on the last part of our journey as Seniors. The students left on the bus wanted to ride to the end of the line. We were the ones who knew that the trip would be a very great and rewarding experience. Thus, we proved to our dear chaperones and others that we had become dignified Seniors. The bus came to a stop, the doors opened and we left realizing that the ride, though sometimes hard and sometimes good, was a well spent period in our lives and a time that we will always cherish. It is the life and breath of months of planning and working of the devoted members of The Annual Staff. As we end these pages of our 1969 Panther, we also end another school year. For Seniors, the high school career is over. The Panther Staff finishes its work for the year, and meets its last deadline. As we reach the top of the stairs, we cherish the memories behind us and we turn our attention to the future. We have reached one of our goals, attempting to conquer all obstacles step by step . We the Panther Staff of 1969, have con- sidered it a pleasure compiling this annual into one that will always be a treasured part of our lives as well as yours. With this, the spotlight dims for another year, but not before it shines toward the future, showing a never-ending parade ofclasses, sports, activities, and the people who make up the homeland of Henderson Institute . Now the challenge remains, with a spotlight on the future. We, the undersigned, have brought our long hours of hard work to an end with this 1969 Panther as our finished product. We hope that it affords you much pleasure always. Elijah Gill m of at fgairun igiai MrS. Elnora Allen Mrs. Lucy Alston Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mrs. Mrs. Mrs. M.r.
