CLASS HISTORY Though many ways of travel would be quicker, we the freshman class of 1949 dccided to begin our trip by ship. Ship would enable us to explore many places that would never be seen by tqain or aeroplane. Believe me! ex- plo ed we did. During our freshman year some members of our crew were able to win recognition by their outstanding ability and popularity. Evelyn Baskett was crowned Miss Homecoming, which made all the freshmen forget to cheer for the team and instead cheer lor her. Another one of our loyal members Laura Baskerville, was crowned.Miss Jabberwock which increased our enthu- siasm and love for our class. In our freshman year we also discovered an orator who won third place in the Crown and Scepter Club oratorical con- test. This was no one but Yvonne Bullock. Another discovery and there was an actor who was Plummer Johnson, winner of the Dramatic award. Now we must not forget our ever loyal Frank Bullock who was our delegate to the National Convention of New Farmers of America which was held in Atlanta, Georgia. . With such a good start on our trip why not continue? Behold! There we were in our second year high school with our spirits still high and not the least undaunted because of our sureness and faith in our classmates. In our second year our classmates interest varied and everyone had be- come acquainted with the surroundings and here's what they netted. Laura Baskerville and Grace Ward were so co-operative and efficient in Home Economics that it was nothing left to do but for them to receive medals. Aha, we are still discovering royalty in our midst and here we are with Grace Ward being crowned as Miss Homecoming. Plummer Johnson was voted all-a-round boy on the campus and this made our flag wave stronger over the sea. John Dunston was such a fine sport, he received the sports- manship award, and this made our faith stronger and sure. The Athletic field was being explored because John Dunston was the best athlete on the campus. Another trial for our orator, Yvonne Bullock and she was still at third place. Now we we e sure our variety was great. Remembering ou first two successful years there was no doubt that we would return and continue. This our Junior year was greater still because some of us were invited to join thc C.own and Scepter Club which is the Honor Society in ou: school and all high schools in North Carolina. Those of us who received the invitation were: Evelyn Baskett, Mary Branch, Glennie Brooks, Ernestine Bullock, Frank Bullock, Yvonne Bullock, Josephine Crews, Maurice Henderson, Plummer Johnson, Dcloris Knight, Estelle Lewis, Annie Marable, Elnora Russell, Archie Southerland, Lattirnore Turner, Celesta Walker, and Sarah Williams. Of course we accepted for was it not an honor ro be asked?

Evelyn Baskett was again crowned queen but this time queen of the Boy's Club Beauty Contest. Our two queens are still together and now we find Laura Baskerville reigning queen of the Business Department. We were fortunate enough to discover another actor in our midst. This was Frank Bullock, who had never acted in a play. The play won first place, with Frank selected as the best actor at the district tournament held in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Appearing in the first place play with the first place actor were Yvonne Bullock and Lattimore Turner. Our oraror has at last reached success and now we find her first place winner of the Crown and Scepter oratorical contest, Chamber of Commerce Essay Award and also second place winner of the Americand Legion Contest. Need- less to say, this was Yvonne Bullock. Frank Bullock has now jumped from delegate and is now the National Vice President of New Farmers ofAmerica and State President of New Farmers of America. Most of us at sometime have enjoyed looking at television but few of us have suffered the fright of appearing. We can boast because one of our crew, Frank Bullock appeared on Strike It Rich and was a success at winning. The proceeds went to the less fortunate, therefore we were proud of him. Our experiments didn't stop there because we were the first Junior Class to have a member win the French Award and this was our striving orator Yvonne Bullock. Encouraged, happy and looking forward to landing at the shore of graduation soon, we continued. We were again happy that we had royalty and this time Evelyn Baskett was crowned Miss Homecoming for thc second time in her high school career and Deloris Knight was her attendant. Another queen was Sarah Williams and she was queen of the Debutante Ball held in Raleigh, North Carolina. To us this was indeed an honor because she reigned over girls from all parts of our state. Ou: queen was not alone because Yvonne Bullock and Josephine Crews also attended the ball as Debutantes. Attending the ball as gucstswere Evelyn Baskett, Grace Ward and Plummer Johnson. We were not shocked, but were certainly surprised to discover an artist among our crew - Plummer Johnson who won the Chamber of Commerce Poster award. As the ship draws near to graduation we adopt this motto, which we plan to abide by strongly We have started forward, sail on. Written by Yvonne Bullock
