l-HQTOIZY What kind of day was IT? Why, it was a lovely late summer day of I955. lt was a day almost like any other school day. With one exception! The high school students waiting to enter the beautiful new Henderson High School were excited. One group of students was perhaps more ex- cited than the others, and rightly so because they would be the first graduating class who would have all four years in this new school. This eager group was the Freshmen. Our freshman days were similar to all the others pre- ceding these with one exception, we were now HIGH SCHOOL students. Along with our new positions went the responsibilities of our rank, so we were soon dispersed to our homerooms with Mrs. Sights, Mrs. King, Mrs. Crafton, Mr. Chapman, Mr. Plain, and Mr. Claycomb as our homeroom advisors. Immediately we set to work to organize our class by electing our class officers who were Sonny Ward, President, Jimmy Ray Willett, Vice-President, and Jim Wilson, Secretary. Jim Wilson and Sonn Mills were among the football layers who brought home a victory from Owensboro in the Thanksgiving Day game. Our football team, with a streak of winning victories and no losses, won the WKC Championship for the 1955-56 season . We were delighted to have Sondra Stone as a candidate for Basketball Queen with Donna Dickerson as a band majorette. Following our summer vacation, we once again entered the doors of Henderson High School, only this time we were sophomores. Our second year in high school was filled with many varied activities. The first task with which we were faced was the election of our class officers who were Sonny Ward, President, Glenda Barnett, Vice-President, Betsy Reid, Secretary and Treasurer, and Bud Crafton, Reporter. We placed six members of our class in the Audubon Chapter of the National Honor Society They were Bud Crafton, Beverly McClanahan, Jerry Rhoads, Wanda Collins, Charlotte Steele, and Gary Tooley. Sherian Holmes and Tommy Owen were chosen for All-State Chorus. We were well re resented on the gridiron with Sonny Mills, Bud Crafton, Jimmy Ray Willett, and Jim Wifason on the football team and Sondra Stone as our cheerleader. Sondra was also our candidate for Basketball Queen . Our basketball team was under the capable management of Eddie Owens. ln the latter part of our sophomore year, the band journeyed to Washington, D.C. to par- ticipate in the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. They were named the second best concert band in the nation. Among those who made the trip to Washington were Carlyle Bailey, Kenneth Hutcheson, Gary Tooley, Wayne Walton, Sharon Freeman, Steve VanMeter, Wayne Wilson, and Sonny Beavan. Donna Dickerson and Jean Porter led the band as majorettes. As the summer fled and early autumn approached, we found ourselves once again en- veloped by our studies and school activities. Class officers for our junior year were as follows: Lili Clay, President, Sonny Ward, Vice- President, Wanda Collins, Secretary and Treasurer, and Nina Drur , Reporter. Aloha Tapp and Sondra Stone as cheerleaders cheered our football and basketball teams on to many victories. Our football players were Jim Bantly, Bud Crafton, Jimmy Ra Willett, Sonny Mills, Mel Hunt, Tommy Owen, Bill Haynes, Sonny Ward, Bobby Stone, Edclie Nieten, Jerry Griffin, Jim Wilson, Mike Pullen, Eric Roberts, and Jerry Rhoads. Carlyle Bailey led our band as Drum Major along with Donna Dickerson, Jean Porter, and Sharon Freeman as majorettes. Wayne Walton represented our school at All-State Band. Our basketball team, with Ronnie Hape as manager, consisted of seven juniors. They were Bill Haynes, Bud Crafton, Sonny Mills, Jim Bantly, Jerry Rhoads, Jimmy Jacobs, and Sonny Ward, with Jimmy Jacobs receiving honor as the Most Valuable Player and as a mem- ber ofthe All-District Team . In March, l958 the Honor Society, at its annual induction service, inducted Jeanie Davis, Judy Martin, Aloha Tapp, and Peggy Griffin.
