Gra nviii« County Ubrafy 8y tem p.O. Box 339 Oxford, NC 27565 PUBLISHED BY THE PEP PAC STAFF Miss Carol Jones, Sponsor Jean Harris, Editor Rose Romer, Co-Editor Nancy Watkins, Business Manager Henderson High School Henderson, North Carolina Foreword Step, step, step-how many steps a person makes each day, each month, each year! An en- tire lifetime can be recorded by making note of these significant steps that are vital in making a life satisfying and meaningful. High school life is full of vital steps. Whether the steps lead one to the showers of confetti at a home football game, the quietness of the Henderson High School library, the noise of the halls as classes change, or the thought- ful exchange of ideas in a classroom, the im- portance of the steps of education, leadership, and character can never be minimized. Truly these are the basic steps upon which the pros- perity, the success, and the happiness of high school students depend. May the steps of education, leadership, and character, which are begun in high school, al- ways lead upward, and may therebe many cher- ished memories along the way. 4 — v; v . Dedication It is difficult to simplify into such a small space all that one person has meant to this school in the seven years she has been with us. Her big smile and quick wit have stimulated within us the spirit of joy and fair play. She who has given her time, her talent, and a part of herself to all of us plays a dedicated part in the cherished memories we carry with us. As teacher and friend, she will always hold a place in the hearts of Henderson High School students. We see her at all the home ball - games rendering her services to us. She impresses us with her rare talents and unlimited knowledge in her biological classrooms. She gives a part of herself as the devoted sponsor of the Futurians. Mrs. Howes displays her rare talents in the classroom. It is with love and gratitude that we, the members of the Pep Pac Staff, dedicate the 1967 Pep Pac to Mrs. Martha Frazier Howes. Mrs. Howes gives a part of herself to H.H.S. Her time is sacrificed to students at the ballgames. The goal of the governing body at Henderson High School is to establish and maintain leader- ship, fellowship, and democracy among stu- dents. Each homeroom sends one boy and one girl representative to the Student Council. In turn, the representatives report to their home- rooms on the current affairs of the Student Coun- cil. The Student Council inaugurates projects which emphasize school spirit and participation in school-sponsored activities. These projects which are undertaken each year include the Homecoming Events, Sadie Hawkins Week, Mr. House contributes his opinion at Student Council meetings. The Student Council furnishes representatives to serve refreshments at ballgames. School Spirit Week, and Religious Emphasis Week. Also, committees are appointed from the council which are responsible for various activities of the school. Included among these are the Building and Grounds Committee and the Parking Lot Committee. The Student Council enables students to voice their opinions. They learn to disagree without being disagreeable. They learn to work cooperatively for the good of the student body. The faculty and students are grateful for this most important student organization. Dennis Tharrington speaks in assembly programs. 67 National OFFICERS: Jerry Stainback, Parliamentarian; Allen Terry, President; Nancy Petty, Corresponding Secretary; George Blackburn, Vice-President; Leigh Oakley, Treasurer; Mrs. Margaret Glover, Sponsor, Nancy Watkins, Recording Secretary. The National Honor Society book store is a valuable asset to H.H.S. students. 68 Honor Society Character, service, leadership, scholarship--the four basic requirements for induction into the National Honor Society. Students are chosen by the faculty on the basis of these four virtues. At the beginning of each second semes- ter, fifteen percent of the Senior Class, ten per cent of the Junior Class, and five per cent of the Sophomore Class are selected to become members of the John T. Alderman chap- ter of the National Honor Society. Induction into this club has become the goal of many students. As the name signi- fies, it is certainly an honor to be a member of the National Honor Society. Members must strive to maintain the re- quired overall ninety average and to continue their service to the school. The annual tapping ceremony has become a highlight of the activities at Henderson High School. All members are proud to be a part of this organization. The Spanish Club of Henderson High School is dedicated to the task of present- ing to its members a realistic portrayal of the temperament and culture of the people of the Spanish-speaking world, a world on which the sun never sets. With this purpose as a firm foundation, the Spanish Club members engaged in various activities designed to create an atmos- phere of Spanish feeling among the par- ticipants. Such projects were the con- structing of afloat to represent the Span- ish Club in the Homecoming parade and the observance of Foreign Language Week. Projects which assumed a more civic nature were the collecting of food for an underprivileged family at Thanks- giving and the collecting of toys for the welfare children at Christmas. High- lighting the year, the Spanish students were most fortunate to have as their guests in the Spanish classes several Latin American natives for a brief span of time. Without a doubt, the Spanish Club is one of the most rapidly developing clubs of Henderson High School. For Thanksgiving andChristmas, the Spanish Club sponsored needy families so they could enjoy the holiday seasons, too. Mexicans demonstrate their native dances to give a Spanish party an authentic atmosphere. Mexican visitors are welcomed by the Spanish Club. The Spanish Club is represented in many activities including homecoming. 75 Latin The Latin Club is designed to promote a better under- standing between the Latin stu- dents and the Latin language. Miss Ramona McIntyre fulfills the duties of sponsoring this club. Students interested in the promotion of the Latin lan- guage, both past and present, are eligible for membership. The club strives to keep the spark of classical learning at Henderson High School alive. Emphasis is placed on the annual Latin Banquet held to enjoy the tradition of promot- ing slaves to masters and creating slaves from new members. A variety of events and projects are taken up by the club. Throughout the year, Latin Students busy themselves with Latin songs, studies of Roman History and religion, and projects representing the Roman culture. The menjbers decide how and where to receive their training and learn about scholarships that are available, certificate requirements, and teaching standards. Each year the Future Teachers of America observe American Education Week and present a chapel program. The most outstanding project is when the senior members actually teach classes on Future Teachers ' Day. They also assist teach- ers throughout the year. They are given the opportunity to expand their knowledge in all fields of science, as well as express any new ideas they have concerning problems of modern science. To be eligible for membership into the Mono- gram Club, a student must earn a letter by the required amount of participation in a varsity sport. The school year of the Monogram Club is highlighted by the student-faculty basket- ball game. It is an active club, providing its members with opportunities to bowl, hike, ride bicycles, and play volley- ball together as group activities. Members may also participate in non- school-sponsored activities such as tennis, golf, and horseback riding. Each girl receives a certain amount of points for each sports event she takes part in, and when she has ac- cumulated enough points, she will be presented with a school letter. This is the only way a girl who does not play basketball, but has an interest in sports and the determination to win a letter can succeed in doing so. To be eligible for mem- bership, a girl must earn a total of twenty-five points by partici- pating in a number of various ath- letic activities. The club takes students that are interested in business and trains them in this field. Distributive Edu- cation students maintain jobs in which they work after school. This plan is efficient in training the students for future business careers. In the classroom, these students learn just how to handle their job in order to be a profit to them- selves and their employer. The club works at various workshops and projects. Each student works hard on such pro- jects, displaying their leadership ability. The principle purposes of the club are to exchange ideas, to develop leadership in the field of work for which the youth is being trained, to set high occupational standards, to stimulate a profes- sional attitude toward work, and to promote good citizenship. 86 Education Phyllis Bunting is engaged in boxing a coat for a customer at Roth-Stewart ' s. Henderson High School is proud to welcome a new club, which is derived from a new course, Industrial Cooperative Training, in the curriculum this year. It is the Vocational Indus- trial Clubs of America or VICA. It helps develop leadership abili- ties through participation in edu- cational, civic, recreational and social activities. It fosters a deep respect for the dignity of work. In this new program, a student benefits from a high school edu- cation and a well paying job. The student participating in VICA is able to learn a trade before gradu- ation and is made aware of the meaning and purpose of work. The annual highlight of the club is an Employee-Employer Banquet which is held in the spring. The banquet helps to stimulate a friendly relationship between the employed student and his em- ployer. Mr. Rex Pace, Co-ordinator; Shirley Alexander, President; Rodney In- scoe, Vice-President; Delores Jones, Secretary; Dottice Guill, Treas- urer. The VICA members plan activities during a Tuesday morning meeting. 88 THE BULLDOG The Bulldog Staff is certainly a service to the students of Henderson High School. Working together, they are constantly ob- servant of the news concerning the students and faculty of H. H. S. Under the sponsor- ship of Miss Peggy Stanton, they work as a team to publish a newspaper that will be of interest to everyone. In the very first days of school, the staff must begin preparing themselves for a busy year. The business staff takes care of the paper financially by selling advertisements, while the editorial staff concentrates on writ- ing feature articles, editorials, and even the less serious section of the newspaper, called the Limelight. This extraordinary newspaper, The Bulldog , is a printed example of the stand- ards of Henderson High School. Its fine staff deserves a sincere congratulation from each student and faculty member for its service and for its ability to arouse the attention of the reader. Each year the final edition of The Bull- dog” is dedicated to the Senior Class. This issue is especially cherished and remem- bered by all who read it. The Bulldog Staff is undoubtedly an asset to Henderson High School. Careful planning and long hours of hard work are vital to the production of an acceptable annual. Although the sixth period of each day is available for members of the Pep Pac Staff, a great deal of the planning and actual work is done outside school hours on the students ' own time. The Pep Pac Staff is responsible for several important projects throughout the school year. One of which is the election of Miss PEP PAC. Knowing the results of such elections is an exciting part of being on the staff. The supervision of school pictures taken in the fall and spring is another re- sponsibility of the members of the Pep Pac Staff. They are faced with many desicions concerning the annual color, theme, cover design, and layout patterns. They must identify each person in each class and all persons in group pictures. Being a mem- ber of the Pep Pac Staff can be quite edu- cational. Members become familiar with technical terms used by the printing company and they are able to visualize and under- stand the methods and materials used in the production of a yearbook. The staff has an assembly program each year in which the annuals are presented to the student body. Originality, accuracy, and perfection are necessities of a successful annual. Miss Peggy Stanton and Durwood Turner from the Bulldog Staff, who were willing to share their pictures with us, deserve a word of recognition. To Miss Carol Jones, our sponsor, a simple thank you would be inadequate. To her we express our most sincere gratitude for her contribution above and beyond the call of duty. And Heaves A Sigh Of Relief . . . A yearbook is more than ink on paper. It is the life and breadth of months of plan- ning and work by a devoted staff. As we end these pages of our 1967 PEP PAC, we also end another school year. For seniors, the high school career is over. The PEP PAC Staff finishes its work for the year, and meets its last deadline. As we reach the top of the stairs, with cherished memories behind us, we turn our attention to the future. We have reached one of our goals, attempting to conquer all ob- stacles step by step. We, the PEP PAC Staff of 1967, have considered it a pleasure compiling this annual into one that will always be a treasured part of your lives. With this, the spotlight dims for another year, but not before it shines toward the future, showing a never-ending parade of classes, sports, activities, and people which make up HHS. And now the challenge remains, spotlighting the future. We, the undersigned, have brought our long hours of hard work to an end with this 1967 PEP PAC as our finished product. We hope you will be pleased. 1 37 Maids After A Hard Night ' s Work . . .
