O orl i Garofina Miss Carol Jones .Advisor Betsy Montgomery Editor Billy Pernell Business Manager 3 T edicaiion We dedicate the 1966 PEP PAC to one who has shared his vibrant personality and much of his time with those around him to promote the various phases of Henderson High School. He is known to many as an ex- cellent teacher because of his enlightened methods of explaining the complicated pages of mathematics. Serving efficiently as spon- sor of cheerleaders, he is responsible for their transportation and well-being. He is a friend to all and a companion to his fellow teachers. His students consider him a person of high esteem, and one who strives for the true realities of life. These years at Henderson High School are filled with pleasant thoughts of his wise judge- ment and courteous nature. They have instilled in us a sense of deep gratitude for his devoted service to both students and the public. He has had faith in us when we had no faith in ourselves. Because of his perception of both truth and honesty, we, the PEP PAC Staff, gratefully dedicate the 1966 PEP PAC to Mr. John Paul Jones. 5 Veterans Field Joreworcf As Time Goes By , we do not often consider the enjoyment of life that we are missing. If we would only recognize the importance, in later life, the things we are enjoying now, we would watch and enjoy each year more carefully; we would probably cherish each moment to its fullest. It is almost as if we are in a play: we take our part and script, learn the rules and regulations, and then act according to our knowledge and desires. Sometimes we succeed and become a great star; at other times we fail and have to begin again. Finally we come to realize that sooner or later the curtain will go down on this part of life. It behooves us to play our part with sincerity and enjoyment. 6 Uime Soes Cast 18 Act I Organizations Act II Features Act ni Athletics 7 W ;- ' v r -A ; Miss Jones ' Typing I Class Henderson High School offers a variety of subjects, which are meant to help each student toward making a success of his or her chosen career. Students are aware of this purpose and the classes are participated into a wide degree. Each class offers a challenge which is accepted every day by the students in forms of tests, term papers, and daily homework. These are just a small part of our class activities. Miss McIntyre ' s English class Mr. Jones ' Algebra class 10 Coach York ' s Business Math class Freshman boys study diligently in health class. Nedra Floyd and Martha Braswell enjoy office work. The English Department is well organized and offers a very interesting program. The Freshmen and Sophomores are studying a combination of American and English literature; while Juniors and Seniors concentrate on one facet of these subjects. Freshmen enjoy their Latin class. Mrs. House ' s Spanish class In a communicative world, such as ours, it has become man- datory that languages be widespread, even in other parts of the world. Henderson High School has three foreign languages in- cluded in its curriculum. They include the recently added Spanish, along with Latin and French. Most students find these a great challenge, and very interesting. Math is also a subject of which at least a small portion is required of everyone. Freshmen take either General Math or Algebra I, then proceed to greater heights in the Math field. Competent teachers make this subject exceedingly interesting. Can you tell just how the history of the world will change, or how it has changed? Enabling the students to understand the government under which they live is the purpose of Civics and Problems of Democracy. World History and United States History teach the students world and U. S. operations. World History and United States History teach the studen t world and U. S. operations. Understanding people is one of the most complicated busi- nesses today. Psychology helps people to understand one another as they go from day to day. Science opens new avenues for all students at Henderson High School. Freshmen are introduced to science through a year of General Science. Biology is taken by the sophomores, and leaf projects are an annual event. Chemistry and physics are courses taken by juniors and seniors. The library is well equipped for all of the students ' needs. The wide variety of magazines and books provide the sources needed for research and term papers. The full-time librarian is ready to help students find needed materials. Seniors concentrate on ac- celerated English. Physical Education is enjoyed by Freshman girls. Mr. House tacks up a reminder. All students are grateful for a school source such as this. Promoting good business positions are the Distributive Education classes. The students attend classes in the morning and work in their various positions in the afternoon. In class, a basic knowledge of buying, selling, advertising, merchandising, and stockkeeping is acquired. This knowledge is useful in their part-time jobs and prepares them for the future. Many Commercial courses are given to prepare students who plan to enter the field. Among the courses offered are Typing I and n. Accuracy and speed are the goals to achieve in this class. Shorthand interest people who plan to do secretarial work. While bookkeeping trains you for a particular phase of work. General Business helps to present a wide view of the business world. Freshman boys and girls are required to take this course. It promotes the physical fitness of each student. In the class- room, students learn first aid and how to care for the body in general. Time is also given in class to learn the operation and care of an automobile. These different facets of study help to keep the student mentally and physically alert. Hayden takes up absentee slips. Mrs. Glover checks papers. 13 Typing I requires concentration. The newly added art class arouses interest , Freshman band students listen for instructions. The Henderson High School Band is one of the highlights of our school. Each musician spends hours practicing. The band exhibits its excellence at home football games and the Christmas and Spring Concerts. Homeroom period is very active for room 211. General Science has its advantages. 14 Psychology increases knowledge. Students take advantage of library materials. French I takes time out to study. Mrs. Murphy attentively watches her class. The Home Economics classes promote the idea of home life. The girls who enroll in class study interior decorating, child care, cooking, sewing, and home nursing. To increase the interest of students, a study in personal and social development is taught. The National Honor Society of Henderson High School is outstanding in that character, service, leadership, and scholarship are the four basic requirements for membership. Fifteen per cent of the Senior Class, ten per cent of the Junior Class, and five per cent of the Sophomore class compose the membership of the organization. The main project of the National Honor Society this year is the Stu- dent Book Store, which is located in the Majorette room. Many students are grateful for this facility, and take advantage of the opportunity which is being offered to them. 66 Mrs. Margaret Glover Coleman Bailey Sponsor Danny Edwards Greg Edwards Dianne Ellis Dottie Ellis Ann Gooch Pat Johnson Paula Johnson Pam McDade Nancy Petty Woody Phillips Barbara Ronner Rose Romer Joyce Smiley Kathy Rose Woody Rozier Ryland Shaw John Storey Larry Taylor Allen Terry Joe Tyson 67 Siuc eni OFFICERS: Coleman Bailey, Treasurer; Joe Tyson, Vice-President; Ronnie Moss, President; Libbo Leathers, Sec- retary; Mr. Harold House, Sponsor. Each homeroom sends one girl and one boy as representatives to the Student Council. After the meetings, the student rep- resentatives report to the homerooms the cur- rent affairs of the Student Council. Projects are undertaken by the Council each year including Homecoming Events, Sadie Hawkins Week, School Spirit Week, and Re- ligious Emphasis Week. Com mittees from the Student Council are responsible for various activities of the school. The Student Council enables the students to voice their opinions in a democratic man- ner. Membership in the club is open to all interested students. The Forensic League is divided into three major areas of interest; dramatics, debating, and public speaking. Members of the club who were interested in dramatics presented a Thanksgiving play to the student body in the fall which was well received. The debating team will compete with many other schools in the district during the year on topics of current interest. Students interested in public speak- ing will have many opportunities to display their efforts during the year. Henderson High School welcomes this new organization to its curriculum. FIRST ROW: A. The underclassmen can lookforward to return- ing to HHS again next year, but for the seniors, a twelve year segment of their lives is drawing to a close. This year we, the PEP PAC STAFF OF 1966, have thoroughly enjoyed compiling your yearbook, which serves as a record of our high school memories. As time goes by, we will often look back on our high school years with longing. We sincerely hope that this annual will serve as a constant reminder of our schoo l year 1966. We have worked long and hard, and this is the product of our efforts. Thus we the undersigned place our signatures below to illustrate our de- sire to please you with this PEP PAC OF 1966. nOiSL M3 AWAY Sin JKemoriam I cannot say, and I will not say That he is dead. He is just away. With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand. He has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be since he lingers there. And you — O you, who the wildest yearn For the old-time step and the glad return - Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of there as the love of here; Think of him still as the same, I say He is not dead - he is just away! jMilton ' Ra Ays cue IN MEMORY OF GAIL TOLBERT I am left behind To sorrow and grieve; She was a beloved friend, And it was hard to pee her leave. Yet I Jcnow in my heart, What her purpose is to be: I must share her with God, As God shared her with me. She left this mortal world Of strife and pain, ; To becoipe the sweetest angel In God’s domain. I once knew an angel, Whose, purpose on earth Was to spread love and joy From the day of her birth. I never saw her cry, Or frown with scorn; Her smile enhanced like sunshine On a summer’s morn. Though the fingers of death, Clutched her in their embrace. For sixteen years, She made our world a better place. Senior S)ireclor ABBOTT, PAUL FRANKLIN PETE Spanish Club 3, 4. ALEXANDER, CAROL ANN HOGARTH CAROL Goldsboro High School, Goldsboro, N.
