The laughter in the halls, the morning announcements, report cards, the patient and understanding attitude of our teachers, cramming for exams, dances, the friends we 've made --- all this we know as H. H. S. Time has a way of erasing many of these wonderful memories, so, we, the Pep Pac Staff, offer this small collection of memories of 1960 - 1961 here at Henderson High School --- LEST WEjFORGET. fr If AY V V L I 1 , I 1 1 I L . I wondered how many dreams had come true for our graduating class. As I glanced through the register for our first reunion after ten years, I noticed the class roster and their achieved positions: Becky Adcock, leaving Raleigh and the little Finches behind, came to the reunion on horseback since she still doesn't have her license. Sylvia Carver, Mildred Burgess, and PeggyAllen have opened their Gateways to Success as the leading business women of Henderson. As usual Ronnie Michels wants the world to know of his success, his operations may be seen on Medic. Margie Lou Hicks leaves Richard in care of the shoe store while she adds her witty ways to the reunion. Johnny Adams has just opened his new supermarket with Mrs. Adams singing at the opening. Ruth Knott flies in from Charlotte with additional char m and beauty, which she receivedfrom her own charm school. Charles Collins is found distributing his latest book, Sleep is a Beautiful Thing. Coach Garland Greenway proudly enters after bringing Henderson High School's football team to an all time high. The beautiful and sophisticated Kay Hoyle has followed the long line of beautiful Hoyles by adding a lengthy number of beauty titles to the clan. Sarah Atkins has used her warmth and understanding wisely, all of your problems may be answered in her helpful column. Mary Lacy Hannon, Carolyn Reavis, and Randi Deacon have made Henderson High their second home as teachers of history, English, and typing, respectively. Fateena Abbott's love for horses has brought her much success, she was selected for part in National Velvet. David Hedgepeth, Victor Horton, and Charles Roberson's love of cars has proven obvious, since the 1971 Fords have been designed by them. From privates to generals in the army have come the following: Billy Brame, Ronnie Hedgepeth, Jeff Hinsley, and Freddie Sanford. Legal or private secretaries, these are the positions held by these shorthand cuties: Jean Franklin, Becky Bar- nette, Judy Brame, Frances Lloyd, and Joyce Roberson. Between modeling jobs and airline hostessing, Carolyn Faulkner, Scarlette Herion, and Elizabeth Roberson are able to put a little fun in their lives. tAs if they needed it.j David Rose just designs the buildings for Roses and lets the rest of the family make the profits from the merchan- dise. Even though Margaret Hamm is the mother of four, she still has the honor of having the best figure around. lAll aroundj With her sparkling eyes and her glowing smile, Matil- da becomes the Homeloving Queen of some lucky man. Dennis Hughes has decided not to let work interfere with his career so he's living it up. The men in the jets may be comprised greatly by Hen- derson High students: Curtis Bradsher, Ronnie Evans, George Grissom, Bobby Parrish, and Marvin Wortham. Pat Hanford, Chloe Hart, Margie Mangum, Jean Rober - son, Ann Vaughan, and Eddie Jean Wiggins have formed their own organization called the Perry Mason Secretaries. Mollie Bagley andaMr. Lanier have joint ownership in drive-in theaters over the world. Phyllis Brown has openeda new world of science since she has discovered the key to moon flights. It seems that Frank Cowan has all the highschool boys drivingvhis floral trucks for Frank's Florist. Bennie Fields has sore feet from walking the floor all day. This is sad but is one of the requirements as aRose's floor manager. Rita Adams has put her talent of hair styling to use, she even invented a hair style for Yul Bryner. We find Nona Vick the leading saleslady and director of Davis's fashion show. Mary Parhanrs friendliness has been a great asset in her life. Due to her grand personality she has been selected as ambassador to Cuba. Some have laughed, some have cried. All have nearly died- but the Pep- Pac and the Bulldog have gone to press. Some of the annuals and newspapers will be stored in the bottom ofa chest, and some will be displayed on a table in a bedroom to one day welcome an adult returning from college. Some will become the victims of our children's inquisitive little hands, and some will be misplaced as we move to a new home. But none will be forgotten. Many years from now, in the fall of our lives, some of us will open this book again or look back at our dated newspapers. This represents the physical side of our Well- rounded student, who must have an outlet forpent-up energies. On gridiron, track, court, field, or course, he develops skill, coordination, and sportsman- ship. These are necessary qualifications for the game of li.fe. Physical development is the evident reward of par- ticipation in high school athletics, but the intangible re- sults can be much more important to the individual. Here is another way to grow and to mature mentally and spirit- ually. The yotmg men and women on our various teams, and the cheerleaders who encourage them, profit im- mensely from each contest, be it won or lost. Good sports- manship and sincere effort are the important elements of athletics. Keepingthese in mind, the participants develop in the ability to think quickly, and to act quickly. In the fall, the glory of the football season begins and leads the agonistic life at H. H. S. The series of varied sports that follow offer Wholesome entertainment for the Bulldogs. High School without athletics is difficult to imagine, for they are an essential part of our year. I-43 1960-61 COACHING STAFF Our coaching staff for the year 1960-61 includes three returning coaches: Coach Piestrak, Coach Stephenson, and Coach Rollins 5 and one newcomer, Miss Mary Greene. The Head of our Athletic Department, Coach Emil S. Pete Pie strak, has returned for his seventh year at Henderson High School. Originally from Pennsylvania, he re- ceived his Master's Degree in Physical Education from East Carolina College. Coach Piestrak is head basketball and baseball coach and an assistant football coach. Coach Wade Stephenson is at Henderson High for his fourth year. Prior to coming here, he graduated from Angier High School and Atlantic Christian College and coached at Selma High School for five years. He serves as head football, freshman basketball, and track coach. Returningto H. H. He attended Selma High School and Wake Forest College. Miss Mary Greene, a native of Star, N. C., has come to Henderson High for the first time this year. The pitcher is on the mound, gets his signal fromthe catcher., There's the wind- up, the pitch, a called strike, and the 1961 baseball season is underway for the Henderson Bulldogs. Out baseball teams, coached by Pete Piestrak, have always given us fine performances, and this year they can hardly be anything different. 162 L 1vr4- zzig- V-nz,-. fl v-V---aw 'A -A -- en. iii. --:H y y r W y i.L.w I, hung.. , - 'lm Left to right: Wesley Kelly. 'P 'P I can't and I'm sure you can't if you have any school spirit at all. People have the impression that cheering is just a lot of fun, and pleasure. Well, this is true but there is also work to do. Cheering takesvigor, vim, and vitality. Under all weather conditions, these twelve colorful girls are always on hand to back their team, whether it is a win or a loss. The cheerleaders show good sportsmanship by welcoming the opposing team and students to our home grounds. This year the cheerleaders chartered buses so that they and the students could follow their team on out-of-town games. Yes, wherever you hear the sound Come on everybody let's YELL, then you know our cheerleaders are backing H. H. We saw many of the traditions: College Career Day, School Spirit Week, Homecoming, the Key Club Auction, and other events that we will always cherish.
