T X x f 5 I MRS. EDWARD SAWITZKE Q . . , Latin 4 - HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1947 WE, THE SENIOR CLASS of 1947, started our high school careers in the fall of '42. Ours was the first class to enter the twelve grade system as it is now. The group of one hundred and twenty-four which entered then has been reduced during these five years to the present number of seventy-one. The class consisted of four home rooms which were under the sponsorship of Miss 'VIorton, Mr. Apple, Mrs. Nanny, and Miss Sexton. Of course, in our first year here we needed a while at H.H.S. to get accustomed to our new high school routine. After the iirst semester, we naturally began to feel that we were more a part of the school. As we look back at it now, it seems that the eighth grade was very insignificant except for one assignment which we had during the last part of the year. This may be remembered as the writing of a five thcusand word theme, the like of which we haven't seen since then in any class. Everyone having recovered from the previous year's mental strain in the summer, the class started the ninth grade with the official title of freshmen, One of our homerooms now was sponsored by Miss Virginia Neece, who had Miss Sexton's homeroom. During this the war was on in full swing, and many of us were seriously concerned because of this. On into 1944 and the next year of school we continued. Just a short while before we entered the eleventh grade. the war ended, and the world was again at peace. This was in the fall of '45, and the class was again diminished so that the two Junior homerooms were those of Miss Morton and Miss Neece. Now we were really up in the ranks, for we were Juniors, and only Seniors stood above us. This was the year of the Junior Class Play, the Student Council election from our group, and the year we received our class rings. All this contributed to the great activity which was carried on by the up and coming class. Our play may be remembered as Girl Shy, and from our ranks C. D. Hamm was elected President of the Student Body. The Junior-Senior was considered one of our greatest undertakings. The circus atmosphere was achieved most effectively for the banquet and dance. With a little bit of a hustle and bustle we took our second semester exams, and said Hallelulia, next year we're seniors! There wasn't any excitement, and it was a regular matter of routine last fall when we came back to school for the last time. This would be our Senior and final year. Never again were we to come back as students. We all entertained this thought seriously for a few days, but it was soon forgotten, for we were down to work. It hasn't been a hard year, maybe it's because we have Hnally settled down, but it has been a busy one. From the first, we have been looking forward to and planning different events. The Senior Play, In Ole Virginnyf' proved a great success, as did all our undertakings. The Junior-Senior was greatly enjoyed by all of us this year when we attended as the honor guests. Coming ever nearer the end of the year, the trip to Washington was made, cards and invitations were ordered, and other preparations were being completed. Now, as ga ' cluation draws near, the superlatives have been selected, class day exercises are being carried out, and graduation is the last item on the agenda for the Class of 1947. Not only is it noted for its musical and marching ability, but it shows how Cooperation in a large group gives best results. The band displays its marching ability at football games and by parades at home and out of town. Each year the band offers two concerts. The band enters in the State Contest annually. both in marching and in playing, not for competition but to find its rating in both these fields.
