So don't throw it away But handle it with care: When reading it, think of H. H. S. And the pleasant times had there. We don't trust your memory- It will decay with age- So this book will aid you As you turn page after page. Youill think of the good times, Maybe a few sorrows too, But mostly of your dear teachers Whom you thought so unjust to you. THE STAFF. Crowder Charlotte Hardee Fntire Company Music: Margaret Candler, Alice Harrison CLASS HISTORY 193 S NANCY PARHANI, Historian Four years ago, and as green as grass A proud group entered the Freshman Class. They numbered one hundred and forty-two, And received all the taunts the Freshmen do. It didn't take long for the threats to be o'er. And the dumb, green freshmen were no more, For we soon learned to obey the rule And become a real part of the school. We held our first class meeting, a jolly affair, And a sponsor as we chose is very rare. For Doc Crowder started us on our way And landed us safely where we are today. The rest of the year passed all too soon, And it wasn't long 'til the month of june. We were no longer Freshmen, but Sophomores glad For we could tease the Freshman lad. We worked for our school. took part in her games Loyalty, honor, and praise were our aims, H. H. S. took first place in our hearts And for her each Sophomore did his part. Our number has decreased to one hundred nine, But we worked together and results were fine, Miss Bethea, our Sponsor, helped us rise-- Her advise and counsel was always wise. Our Junior year proved to be grand, One hundred two-a happy bandg Miss Kyle and Mr. Latham led us that year Their struggles for us were very dear. We gave our play which we thought wasn't bad, Whrn it was over, we were very glad. For we were rich as kings and queens And with our money, we would buy many things. We all became Dutchy , and there came a chance, So one night we gave the Seniors a dance, There were windmills, tulips. and Dutch scenes gay As a farewell to those who were going away. But hark! Then came the best of all years,- We are Seniors and parting time nearsg But loads of good times together we share With never a worry and never a care. We're seventy-five happy Seniors with Sponsors They're always ready, with a helping hand. To Miss Taylor and Doc,' praise is due For our success we owe to you. We gave our party at Hallowee'n And our Senior play was a roaring scream. We had lots of fun as together we worked By no boy or girl were duties shirked. We went to the banquet the Juniors gave We Although we were happy we were also sad To think of leaving seemed so bad. had a good time and about it did rave. And after four years of work and fun, To the day of graduation we have comeg We must say adieu to Alma Mater, dear, And wish her luck, and give her a cheer. Here's to her memory, her honor, her fame, And may her But by other Best wishes from the Class of '35. glory never wane, classes be kept alive! grand LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT --f-f--4-3-4- '--- We, the Senior Clas of Henderson, North Carolina, in the year 1935, do leave the following will. To We To An To We SECTION V the High School student body as a whole, leave you our friendship, body and soul. Henry, who proved to be our truest friend, automatic bell to put his worries at end. the school itself, an unconquerable shrine, leave many a tear for the good times of Auld Lang Syne . Signed and sealed on this the 21st of May in the year ninteen thirty-tive WILLI.ALI jEFFi:RsoN Powisu., Testator Kermit Clayton, he said, was then representing Vance County in the North Carolina legislature and was rapidly becoming outstanding. Bill took mf over to the law firm of Eason, Stainback, and Edwards, none of the lawyers were, in however, so I had to be satisfied with talking a few minutes to their secretaries Jessie Clopton, Margaret Woodlief and Lecta Stone. While there, Leslie May came to see Paul Stainback on business but Leslie seemed worried and did not recognize me. After he left, Lecta to-ld me that he had married Lucille Hamm and was operating a large truck hauling business, and had been having a pretty tough time lately. Bill and I went over to see the chief of Police, J. W. Rose, and J. W.. good sport that he was, offered to show me over the city the next day. The following morning while on my down town from my hotel I noticed an airplane field with a large sign over the entrance- U-Fly-It Airplane Co. owned and operated by Hodge Newell. Going a little further down the street I saw a well kept, prosperous looking lumber yard, J. W. told me that Meredith Watkins was rapidly making money there. Before reaching the main section of town, we stopped by Tennie Hardee's florist shop and got a rose bud for our coats. We then went down to one of the Pender's stofres and talked to Elden Du Priest, its manager. Our next stop was the offices of Milady Beauty Shops, a large chain of'beauty shops owned by Carolyn Polston. I learned from Carolyn that she had Mary Frances Williams, Blanche Wcrtham, and Mary Betty Dunkley operating shops for her in Dur- ham, Greensboro and Charlotte, respectively. Under the offices of the com- pany I noticed a great rumbling. It came from the Modiste Shoppe, a very exclusive ladies ready to wear store which was operated by Mary Mitchell Baity. Visiting it, I saw Erma Hicks modeling a gorgeous black velvet even- ing gown and Fannie Bowling a green plaid sport suit. I recognized also Ruth Branch and Mary Carroll, who were clerks in this store. I then, found myself facing the largest building in town, judging from the signs, it turned out to be Rose's 5 8: 1Oc store. On the side of the building were several office entrances and over one of them? I read this sign, Wallace Kelly, Chief Accountant. We passed through the business and professional women's building and I observed these signs on the doors: Anne Mills, Interior Decorator , ttjeanne Dunn, Portriat Painting , Piano Lessons for Advanced Pupils, Margaret Candler, Instructor , Classes In All Kinds Of Dancing, Tom Parham and Virginia Lowryf' We took lunch and then drove out to the Hospital, three miles on the Richmond highway. While there I had a long conversation with Dr. Dorothy Wiggins, nurses Evelyn Murray and Juanita Hester and welfare worker Lucille Basket. On the way back to town we stopped at J. W.'s tennis club and played several games. Fred Hecht, the tennis professional, helped me considerably with my backhand stroke. We ate supper at the club and, upon my compli- menting the meal, he told me that Mildred Tucker was the dietician there. As soon as we got down town, J. W. had to go tb the library to look up some information and 1 went with him. While he was busy I talked to Nancy Parham, the librarian. about the phenomenal growth of the town. I found out from her that Ruth Parrish and Elizabeth Beardt were' writing a book on this subject. After J. W. finished his work he went home, but I went to the picture show. I was very much surprised t-o find so much home talent on the screen. Louise Flowers and Alice Harrison starred in the pic- ture while the costumes were designed by Ruby Mae Hagwood. A special feature dance was given by Mary Lee Hamlet. The next morning while wandering around I came across the magnificent high school. This building was so much larger and better equipped than the one which was proposed when I graduated and the one in which I had wished so much to go to school. that I could hardly believe that it was the same building although it had had about a half more added since its original planning. I went in to the building and talked to the principal, Miss Margar- et Reavis, and the Latin teacher, Miss Fannie Mosley. From them I learned that the pupils were now offered courses in shorthand, typing, economics, do- mestic science and other useful arts, also that the very latest methods of teaching were used. On my way back to the hotel I stopped by the courthouse and listened for a very few minutes to a case Judge Donald Evans was trying. It seemed that Effie Flannagan was being tried for running into farmer Hamit Ellis. At the time of the accident she was trying to wave to Reverend Ellard Yow and turn a corner at the same time. Hasn't she learned to do that yet? That night after thinking of my trip I discovered that I had seen or heard from ali of my old schoolmates of the class of 1035 and having thus satisfied my desire, I returned to Honolula to continue my own peaceful life.
