HE local squad was called together for practice soon after the curtain tell, which closed the football season. The prospect seemed bright for a winning team, although several letter men of last year had been lost by graduation. Captain-elect Baker Vpton, Marvin VVatkins. Harry Moore, Jack Upton, and Knox Porter reported at the lirst practice. Several new candidates proved worthy of mention. The schedule began with three victories, but heavy scholastic duties took two regu- lars from the squad, in Watkins and Porter. Sam Watkins proved himself worthy of filling the berth as guard. It is said that the loeals were at their best when they defeated Oxford High School in the first game by a score of 21-23. Later the event was repeated in Oxford. The locals were given a three day trip to Wilson, Rocky Mount. and Raleigh Orphanage. This was the tirst trip of this kind for the boys, but they came back with the scalp of the Wilson High lads. The fans report that the most thrilling game at home was the eontest between the Roanoke Rapids tive and the lot-al quintet. Trailing by a lone point Captain B. Upton started the fireworks during the last two minutes and won the game. Although the team lost more than halt of the games played. the total score of the season shows that they always gave a good account of themselves. The Henderson second team made a better record than the varsity. This fact alone is enough to predict a winning team at H. H. S. next year. Dee. 7 H. Dec. 20 H. Jan. 4 H. Jan. S H. Jan. 9 H. M. C. A. The drive was over siibsnribed, much to the joy of the young people. In September, Mr. John T. Fesperniaii of Augusta, Ga., was secured as whole ti111e Y Secretary. Upon his arrival, he iininediately made himself popular with every- body. His Iirst real duty, perhaps, was to take to tl1e Older Boys' Coiiference in Raleigh, N. C., December fl 111111 111, 1922, a group of Henderson Boys. Thirteen were taken o11 tl1is trip, and. 1111011 their return, Mr. Vail, then State Iloys' Work Secretary, was secured to come over and organize a Hi-Y Club for Henderson. This was done on Deceinber 11, 1923, in the C1l1ll1l1lCl' of Coniiiieree. The Iirst ot'- ticers were: President, Marvin Watkins: Vice-llresideiit, James Cheatham, Secreta1'y, He11ry T. Powell, Treasurer, George McDaniel. During this year the growth of the Club was rapid and soon the li111it of twenty boys was reached. Among the llllllly things done the lirst year were: The sei-uriiig of twenty-seven dollars to aid in the foreign work, the securing of Dr. E. C. Branson of Chapel Hill to address the boys and the llllllllllllllly on Robert E. Lee, the Chris' tian GQl1t1Cl1lflll.U The Club early took a stand to eradicate whatever 1'Ol'lll of cheating there might be among the students, and at its weekly meetings every phase of this work was dis- cussed. Its influence during this ti111e was l1lZ1l'1iGt1 and at the end of the year the Principal of the High School, i11 tl1e presence of the school, paid a high t'OlllD11lll0llt, by saying that the Hi-Y Club had more intiueiive U11 the morale of the school 1112111 any other organization. At the end of tl1e school the Club dispensed with the weekly meetings for the Slllll- 111er, but resumed them the second week i11 September. About this time the Y Secretary, Mr. Fesperman, was made State Boys' Work Secretary, and 1llllC11 to the sorrow of everyone, announced that he would leave the Hrst of November. He is gone but not forgotten. Mr. W. A. Welsh, from Jackson. Miss., was secured to take his place. While the boys we1'e sorry to lose Mr. Fespermau, they were glad to get Mr, Welsh, and are finding as time goes on that he is also willing to do whatever he can for the advance- ment of the boys in tl1e COllllllllll11y. On November 30, December 1 and 2, 1923, tl1e boys of the entire state met at Greensboro, N. C., for the 5th Older Boys' C0ll1'E'l'91li'P. The Hi-Y Club was repre- sented by twenty-seven boys, everyone of wl1o111 was made better by attending this con- ference. Upo11 returiiing from Greensboro, tl1e need of a Hi-Y Club at Middleburg. N. C., a small town six miles 1101111 of Henderson, was seen, and a coinmittee of tour boys was appointed to visit the tow11 and organize a club, which was done on December 12, 15123, AS this goes to press, the Club is preparing to organize a .1lll110l' Hi-Y for the Hen- C19l'S0l1 High School.
