These groups practice, drill, rehearse, plan, attend, and perform to boost spirit and morale in our pride of Lions. The colorful, performing groups like the cheerleaders, drill team, pep squad and band spend many hours — mostly after school — polishing and perfecting cheers, kicks, chants and routines. Other groups led by the Student Council plan special events, take care of concession stands and give rous- ing encouragement to the Lions. It doesn’t matter if the contest is athletic, scholastic, team or in- dividual, we are all Lions, and we are all behind each other. Cheerleaders huddle to decide the weekly winner of the Spirit Stick. Linda Linthicum, The drill teams add color and pageantry to the pep rallies and games head cheerleader, makes each announce ment as full of suspense as possible. Pep Squad members arrive long before the fans to set up and get prepared for the pre-game activities. The student body, whether it be pep squad, drill team, fans, cheerleaders, band, or football team, is tha backbone of team support. Terry celuavecter cornpletes her fourth year as a high school cheerleader which makes her the first in years. Thanks for four years of dedication, service and plain old hard work. A microphone is no stranger to Burke Brack, but this time he’s playing radio an- nouncer instead of singing. Test Question: Who is acting normal in this picture? Junk foods in countless varieties are the staples of our diets. Give us tacos, pizza, hamburgers, french fries, chips, candy bars along with gallons of soft drinks, and we _ consider ourselves well-fed. Whether it is lunch at school (required by a closed campus), afternoon snacks on the highway, or dinner at home, as long as we're fed frequently (every hour on the hour), we're easier to live with. The snack line is a popular spot in the cafeteria where students can choose from a Variety including pizza, corny dogs, and frito pie. How these ladies prepare enough food to fill up 1004 teenagers is impossible to imagine. Karen Belcher takes Jo Nan Morris's order to McDonald’s which opened on Hwy. 79 this year. Henderson is finally on the map. Lineman get Pei Me instructions from coach Mike Teafatiller before the season opener at Hallsville. oe Doug Konchek and Wesley Goode are all smiles even though John Polk is the only one with the money. Susan Cassity and Adrienne Stover proof- read advertisements before going on the air during the Band Radio Day at KGRI The back of the band comes through loud and clear. Clothes Line “To each his own’ has been the motto for each generation with its choice of fashions. Our generation has taken this as a slogan for the individual because anything goes. What went this year for girls were ruffles, ruffles, ruffles everywhere — on shirts, skirts, hems, sleeves, collars .— anywhere. The trick this year was to find a shirt, skirt, sweater, or pair of jeans without some kind of insignia. Foot fashions saw some old style revivals with ballerina shoes, flats, penny loafers, and topsiders. The dependable boots and tennis shoes have stayed and stayed and stayed. Mini-skirts (longer than those of the ‘70’s) showed up again, and sweater dresses made a_ brief showing. The main characteristic of fashion this year was_ that everyone was in style in anything — 1oeach his own. Tangela Gates wears a mini shirt and Jackie Runnels sports a sweater dress and leg warmers. Chris Terry gets his first taste of senior outside reading selections with How Green Was My 7. Valley. Dawn McRae admires Angela Lutz's homecoming mum that was sold by the Band Boosters. Cindy Green, Scott Whitehead and Jed Davis give the beat that keeps the pep rallies jumping. Patrick Pollard altered his normal dress code for Punk Rock Day. Jed Davis won second place on Bandana | Day for his colorful scarves and first place on Punk Rock Day for his attire. Supporting The Lions We call ourselves a pride of lions, and we are proud of the support we give each other. A week-long special event this year was Spirit Week directed by the Student Council. It was a fun- filled time of activity that everyone could get involved in. One project was the class lions where each student signed to show his class’s support of the team. The Student Council also planned Red and Blue Day when everyone was to wear school . colors. Bandana Day had students and faculty tied up with bandanas everywhere. Lion Day was a challenge to see who could attach the most Lions to himself. The hit of the week had to be Punk Rock Day which made one think we were having a Hallo- ween Carnival. Even the faculty joined in (after they found out what “punk’’ was), and some pretty outlandish costumes were worn. There was everything from plastic trash bags cinched with _ gold belts to multi-colored Nikes. The more adventuresome sprayed their hair in a wide array of colors. The Homecoming Pep Rally ended the school day, but many stayed on for the car parade through downtown. The entire week built up to the Homecoming Game which climax- ed the week with a 21-0 victory for the Lions. Lions, lions, lions cover Derinda Brooks who was a strong contender for the most lions on Lion Day. Many of these balloons were floating downtown after the car parade that followed the Homecoming Pep Rally. It’s Friday. The pep rally is over. The weekend is beginning. YEA! Presiding over the Thespians Troupe is Tonya Deck who gets plans underway for the year. 7) Any teacher who can wear a mini skirt left over from the seven- ties, attach 27 lion emblems to herself, then sit in the hall in a snug sack covered with lions deserves something. Even before she did this, the an- nual staff decided to dedicate this volume of the Lions Den to Miss Joe Hudson for her evident school spirit. Her enthusiasm is obvious since she was also voted as having the most school spirit by the seniors in a fun faculty Hi-Life Poll. A familiar face at sporting events, Miss Hudson is not con- tent to be merely a spectator. This year she supervised the construc- tion of a gigantic spirit sign placed Joe Hudson Dedicatee on Hwy 64 for the football team to see as they were on their way to the bi-district playoffs. Miss Hudson teaches a variety of social studies courses from world history to sociology, depending on her schedule. She supports her students in the Classroom as well as on the play- ing field and is always quick to give compliments, encourage- ment and good constructive Criticism. Whether in or out of class she is always there with a smile and cheerful word. So it is with respect and sincerity that we say — Miss Hudson, we think you are Top of the Line. 17 Big people, little people, tall people, short people, dark peo- ple, light people, adult people, student people, bright people, not-so bright people — there are all kinds of people that walk the halls here, and this variety is what makes the school have its own personality. One special group of people this year is the Seniors. (Aren't Seniors always special?) They are the first class to be graduated after walking the halls of the new high school for four years. The building opened back in 1979 when they entered as freshmen. They are the first of a long line of graduates who will have attended classes here for four years and discovered they are special le aie Reset ot Reon - ee a A ee = ROE eae Tite sees eet Wer , 2 : a. 4 ! ee PATRICIA ANN ADAMS -.. going to college, starting a new life. The thought of spending six periods a day, every day, in class, with no variety is enough to make a student turn off the alarm, crawl back in bed, and stay there. The many groups on campus plan activities that are fun, enter- taining, worthwhile, and as a bonus — educational too. Not all learning comes from a textbook. Activities sponsored by these groups — pep rallies, band trips, talent shows, Christmas parties, Valentine post office, Christmas greetings, can food drives, candy sales — make the day worth get- ting up for. All that practicing paid off when the band won Sweepstakes at the UIL marching contest in Rose Stadium in Tyler. Backed by a strong Booster Club, the group raised money for a spring trip to Washington, D.C. by sponsoring a radio day on KGRI, holding a car wash at Wal- Mart and selling a variety of novel- ty items. As new businesses come in here and others expand, it’s difficult to understand the economic dif- ficulties of cities seen on the net- work news. The merchants and _ industries offer a wide variety of goods and services that rival the selection of any comparable town in the area. This makes trading at home easy. A large part of the yearbook’s budget comes from the following advertisers whose help keeps the price per copy of the annual reasonable. This year has been a lot of fun and one that will not be forgotten at least by one class — the Class of ‘83. However this year is not only dear to the seniors but to every class. The freshmen will always remember their first year in high school and the underclassmen can look forward to the day when they will get to become the up- perclassmen. As the senior class spends its last few days here, they can recall the good and bad times. However, it has all got to stop somewhere so for the 1983 Lions Den this is the end of the line.
