It has been said that a personls high school days are one of the most memorable events of his life and that the most outstanding memory of those days is the school spirit in general. Our school spirit is neither tangible nor describ- able as it is created only by the summation of our efficient, hardwork- ing, helpful teachers and leaders, our loyal, alert, active student body, and the various and numerous activities in which they engage. You, the readers of this book, have contributed to the making and are a part of this school spirit. For this reason the Staff sincerely hopes that yon, the readers, will enjoy this book now, and in the years to come, when your days in Henderson High School will have passed and you will have gone on to a new and greater life. u CONTENTS Events Administration Sophomores Juniors Seniors Activities Sports Favorites Advertisements 1 Eg M- f rw www, ., gg-,gg f -ffrffgwi w efvny f .- 3 Malt:-g 23? 2525 132.5- 1 . A MR. W. BOLTON MR. R. FLANAKIN JOHN CASSITY Head Coach ' Line Coach Manager 'G 5, Y .6- THE HISTORY OF THE 1949 LIONS The Lions of '49 were one of the biggest surprises that Henderson football fans have had in many years. The Lions, who were pre-season favorites to fight it out for the cellar, were once ranked fifth in the state standings and wound the season up with eight wins and two loses. They lost ten regulars from last season's team, and little hope was expressed as training began on a hot, sultry day in August. But there was something inside this group of boys who had been playing together sinc e 1945 when they won two championships in junior High. This team went to jackson- ville and scalped the Indians 32-0. The Lions then took the highly touted Dragons from Nacogdoches to the tune of 14-O. After over-powering the favored Palestine Wildcats 46-7, and Bryan 25-0, people began to sit up and take notice of the surg- ing Lions. District play started when the Lions edged the Longview Lobos 7-0. They bur- ied Tyler 37-O, and were ready for the game of the year with Marshall. After playing their hearts out, the Lions finally fell before the much heavier Mavericks by a score of Z1-14. This game will always be remembered by Henderson fans. Some of whom still say that Mar s hall was just lucky as well as being equal to a. college team. The next game Saw the Lions bounce back with a Z1-0 win over the Kilgore Bfilldo g s. The next game with the Texarkana Tigers was the only disap- pointing game of the season. The Lions played hard but they just cou1dn't get start- ed. Time after time, they would march down the field only to lose the ball on fum- bles. The 14-0 count in favor of T exarkana does not do justice to the game that was played. However, the Lions bounc e d back to close the season by handing the Gladewater Bears a 2.0-7 defeat. R Mr. J. W. Bolton and Mr. jasper Flanakin deserve all the credit for shaping these boys into a winning team. H e nde r s o n High is indeed fortunate to have two such fine men. We will always remember them, and the Lions, as the greatest team of all time. gf .L.......... 5- I EA l , BILLY LEACH - End Znd Team All District , ii' JI Lg M 1 r ff up L? 1 X, n n 6 . fd' ,A I ui Q- ' 'X N A .ff L 4 , ' W, , H ,, Y. ,.. - lg.
