When historians attempt to chronicle the events of this generation, it may be that they will overlook the accomplishments and tribulations of a group of students known as the Class of '56 of Henderson County It is doubtful that history books ofthe year 2000 will mention the activities of this group. Less their achievements be overlooked, and in order that a record be preserved for posterity this history of the Class of '56 is written. ln the month of September 1952, a darling group of teenagers throughout Henderson County began an unforgettable experience - the beginning of their high school education. Little did the residents of Spottsville, Niagra, Weaverton, Hebbardsville, and Corydon think that in these schools was the making of the greatest class in the history of the county. ln September of 1954 these schools joined forces. Together we entered our junior year of school at Henderson County High. ln order that the members of County High become acquainted, many social activities were held: the Sadie Hawkins Dance, several Sock Hops, and a Barbecue for the seniors of '55, During the year of '54-'55, the class experienced some disappointments. Juanita Mullen Jeanie Wollitz. and Jackie Crisp moved away. Ray Lewis entered the Navy and Paul Nunn joined the Air Force. The following students were married: Betty Risley, Joyce Ligon, Marlan Jewell, Lucy Smith, and Betty Gibson. Billy Pugh, Rudy Givens, Eula Courtney, Barbara Helton, and Elsie Sellars also were married but continued their education. We were fortunate in gaining some new members --John Klamm, Margaret Reinhardt, Wayne lgleheart and Cecil Lo an g . Jerry Bridges, Eddie Brooks, Ronnie Newman, Doris O'Nan, John Simpson, and Tommy Hancock were members of the basketball team. The members of the class who helped to make up the football team were Bill Augustus, Cecil Logan, Rankin Powell, Billy Jones, and Albert Glassco. The following girls made up the varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders: June Haynes, Barbara Gillham, Shannon Beasley, Bertha Kavanaugh, Evalyn Waggoner, Judy Duncan, Dixie Hungate, Sue Fisher, and Jada Thomas. Sam Galloway Bobby Crafton Jimm' Pinkston and Pl'ili Tri won honors in agricul- I 2 Y v ' P gg tural achievements. Students who exhibited their literary skills by entering essay contests were Alice Proc- tor, Shannon Beasley, Barbara Gillham, and Judy Duncan. Betty Gingell, Barbara Gillham, and Jackie Crisp were attendants for the '55 basketball queen. Sue Gail Fisher reigned as queen of the F. F. A. Evalyn Waggoner represented the County High members of All State Choir in the National Choir, being one of twenty girls from Ken- tucky to appear in this group. An ensemble consisting of ten girls won a superior rating at the State Music Festival. Of these, the following were in the Class of '56: Betty Gingell, Barbara Gillham, Nora Williams, Shannon Beasley and Carol Rhoads. The graduation exercises of the class of '56 were held in the gym- nasium on May 17, 1956. Spaum L. J. Byrum James M. Crafton James W. Holland i'h.a'X 13 Carol Rhodes Historian YD bs . T . Coach Mojo Hollowell The Henderson County Football Team was an untried team with most of the boys playing football for the first time. Coach Obbie Todd was well pleased with the Colonels, because win or lose, they never gave up. Teamwork was the key word with the 1955 ball club.
