HILLTOP HIGHLIGHTS 1974 VOLUME XII HENDERSON CENTRAL SCHOOL CO-EDITOR CO-EDITOR TREASURER ART EDITORS LINDA BABCOCK DEBRA WEAVER MARY MILLARD JUDY SIMMONS KEVIN WARNER FOREWORD The purpose of any yearbook is to accumulate friends, past times, and memories, so all, young and old, can share them in years to come. Over the years at HCS, the seniors have acquired many memories and will always look back on HCS with growing admiration. The mem- ories enclosed in Hilltop Highlights '74 will always remind them of their final year here at Henderson. Their senior play, magazine sales, dances, and senior trip most certainly will bring on mixed emotions. In this yearbook, we hope to gather together the thrilling mo- ments we have shared, the activities in which we have participated, and the friends we have made. This edition of the yearbook, Hilltop Highlights ’74, has special importance to the Seniors, as it provides a summation of their last year, their last look at HCS. For these class members who will soon be separated, it is their link with the past, a memory which is always close by. DEDICATION Mr. Wilson, The 1974 yearbook staff takes great pride in dedi- cating this edition of our yearbook to you--a man with a sense of humor, great devotion to everyone, especially the Senior Class. Your tolerance, consideration, integ- rity and adaptability to the students and faculty makes you an asset to our Alma Mater. FRONT ROW: Linda Babcock, Kevin Warner, Mary Millard. Each with their own individual dreams and plans. Here comes Linda back from the hospital in her physical therapist uniform. As she relates to us her many exciting and satisfying experiences with her patients, we all think, We knew Linda would make it. She is now head therapist at Upstate Medical Center. Greg found it possible to spare a short time away from his political campaign and attend the Class Reunion. He now leads such a busy and exciting life and we all pledge our support for his election. Debbie arrives and tells us she just flew in from Europe. She has been stationed there for several years as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. She has seen much of the country and traveled to many parts of the world so tells us of the many interesting places she has seen. Chyme has made quite a name for himself in the architectural field. He holds the promising position of architectural technician. He design and contracts buildings for the biggest engineering company in the United States. Deb arrives next donning her sneakers and a whistle. She was the athlete of our class and has done very well to accomplish her dream--She's very happy as a coach. Look out here comes Bob! He’s used to wheeling big Mack trucks around and might just forget what he's doing. As a tractor trailer driver for Bums in Watertown, he manages to confirm the impres- sions we've had of truck drivers by the stories he tells. A waitress at every truck stop--You'd better believe it!! Judy made it. She found time to get away from her Art Studio in Paris to come and spend a few hours with us. We always knew she d make a splash in the Art world some day. Charlene has managed to raise her five children into young adults and is now very happy as a homemaker and secretary in a big office. All that training in J V T C is now being put to good use. Continued on Page 37 IN T994 FRONT ROW: Juanita Villeneuve, Dennis Smith, Brenda Barnett, Scott Brown, Richard Vallance. Debbie, Rod, Chyme, and Linda are still hanging on. This was the year Ronny joined our eager mob. We remember Mrs. Hess telling us to be quiet, taking those ugly naps, learning to tie that big shoe and playing in the comer with the toys. We advanced to the first grade, learning play time was over. We read Jimmy and Sue books, learned counting to a thousand, and how to add and subtract. Miss Stevens had a big time teaching us those three things. When we entered second grade Bob came into our class. Mrs. Fishel gained a new group of natural musicians. Triangles, bells, and singing were our specialties. Perfecting our math was Mrs. Fishel's biggest aim and teaching us to get along with others was her next. Tliird grade was next in line with Mrs. Mereand. This was a big jump for us be- cause we not only ate lunch with the bigger kids but had gym class with them too. Spelling bees were Mrs. Mereand's pride and joy. We advanced to fourth grade not knowing what was in store for us. Mrs. Heath's reading aloud, the pledge to the flag, multiplication tables, and Kevin and Charles hitching up with us did us in. Tliis was the year when we learned to pay attention in class. Mr. Hyde kept us on the alert by tlirowing chalk at us. We also managed to survive through those state reports. Charlene joined us tliis year. Bruce came to our class along with Miss Richardson, an assistant to Mr. Walker. Rod's fainting spells before shots brought a laugh to everyone. We took a big step when we went upstairs and also gained Jim. The girls found out how to make aprons along with Mrs. Pope’s help, while the boys made leafshelves in shop class. In eighth grade we became more acquainted with the upstairs, knowing the rooms and teachers better. We had to earn Howard Hughes money to pass eighth grade English and History. We will never forget Coach Wheeler's World War II stories in good ole Science 8. Debbie Weaver hopped into our class this year. Fudge and cookie sales helped toward our Senior trip. At last we were known as the Class of '74. Who could forget our paper drives, along with our dance and jacket sales? How many times did we stump Mr. Kraft with our geometry problems? Mr. Wilson was the only person brave enough to take on the task of our class advisor. Our Junior year brought on a lot of activities: sales kits, stationery and jacket sales, a square dance and our prom. We also lost Paul Slums tliis year as a graduating Junior. Greg Scott, returning from a leave of absence in Mexico, joined our merry group that year. It seemed as though Regents Exams (English and History) were tlirown at us that year, but we survived them. Finally we became Seniors. With only thirteen of us, money-making became quite a problem. Graduation preparations kept us busy all year. Maybe our class will start a new tradition with color Senior pictures. As Graduation draws near, we wish to thank the students, the faculty, and especially Bruce Wilson for making these thirteen years certainly some of tlie happiest and most memorable that we ever hope to have. He had trouble making travel connections to make the trip here and be with us. He too is very happy with his job as a custodian at the Pentagon. Rod is next. He’s been busy making a name for himself as a Professional Basketball Player. With practice and appearances he manages to keep very busy and see a lot of the country. We enjoy hearing how his chosen profession has made him happy. Kevin has followed his original instincts to become a big game hunter in Africa. He enjoys the danger and satisfaction of this type of life and has led many a Safari through the big game territory. He has many pictures to show of game he has captured and the animals he has stuffed as keepsakes. Bruce's indecision was short-lived. He's become a very successful and distinguished lawyer and his name is very well-known. He handles many of the criminal cases of the Supreme Court, which leaves him very little time for socializing, so we feel honored that he took the time to be with us today. Charlie took advantage of the education and training he received at J V T C to become a sales- man. He has recently been promoted to Sales Manager and represents one of the biggest firms in the state. Jim hadn't decided what field he'd enter when we graduated so he has had a variety of jobs. We hope that he has now settled on his present one as an actor. Everyone has arrived now and after a few minutes of conversation and becoming reacquainted, someone suggests a walk through the school. As we stroll down the halls of our Alma Mater we reminisce a little and hope to see a familiar face we find that we see very few except for an occasional niece or nephew. The faculty members have changed and strangers have taken our places with their ideas and voices echoing through the rooms and halls. Many memories and inner feelings haunt us, each with their own sentimental values. We hear an occassional laugh from one of the group as he relates to us something that is brought to mind of twenty years ago. Memories of class activities, teenage crushes, disappointments, accomplishments and anticipations are relived with mixed emotions. As we return to the hall to leave the school we see a group assembled outside to greet us, the remaining available members of our faculty. We had asked our Class Advisor to join in our celebration today, but, received no definite answer. But, who’s the first familiar face we see? It seems that he has contacted the available members of our teaching staff and asked them to join us here today for our picnic. What a surprise!! It seems he still teaches and after all these years is still keeping Bachelor Quarters. Would you believe Good Ole Mr. Wilson!!!!!! We've had a lot of fun, good food, friendly conversation and done a lot of reminiscing. As we now leave, each to our individual worlds, we have a great feeling of satisfaction in knowing each is happy and successful in his own field of endeavor. We are very proud of each and every member of our class and feel we have covered a broad variety of occupations as a result of our initial education at H.C.S. It was with great pride we became members of the Alumni and now vow to have another re- union in the near future when it is convenient for all. 37 COMIC THE CLASS CUT-UPS: Kevin McGrath, Bruce Boynton THE MOST BASHFUL: Charlene Shattuck, Bob Schryver 38 THE CLASS CLOWN: Charlie Chaufty CAPTIONS THE CLASS COUPLE: Debbie Mc- Grath, Rod Richmond THE MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED: Greg Scott, Linda Babcock THE MOST AMBITIOUS: Pat Stallman, Jim Schryver 39 YEARBOOK PATRONS Although the Yearbook Staff has kept the price of the 1974 Yearbook relatively low, it continues to cost approximate- ly six dollars per book to produce. It is the continued support of our Patrons that enables us to minimize the cost of in- dividual yearbooks. The 1974 Yearbook Staff would like to express their appreciation to the following people who made contributions to help defray the cost of the 1974 HILLTOP HIGHLIGHTS: Mr. Mrs. Bruce Babcock Mr. Mrs. Ralph Babcock Mr. Mrs. Ralph Lester Babcock and Family Jessie Besaw Ellen De Lavergne Mr. Mrs. Karl Gillette Mr. Mrs. David Gravino The Charles Gregory Family Miss Nancy Haller Mr. Mrs. Arthur Hess Dr. John J.
