Class History 1958 was a good year at H.C.S., for that September the Class of “71” made its first appeamace on the world and local scene. Marthe, Pat, Rick Hess, Dennis, Carla, Ron, and Deb all greeted Mrs. Hess with the usual “I can’t do this” and “1 don’t know how to do that.” After learning the basic requirments for a higher education, Mrs. Hess promoted us to first grade, either because we deserved it or she couldn’t stand us another year. In first grade Miss Stevens taught us many things such as adding and subtracting numbers. After surviving “Jimmy and Sue” in our reading books, we were all happy to go on to second grade. We met Mrs. Vorce in second grade. We all remember our May Day Circus and the wonderful time we had learning to write. Third grade was an exciting year. How can we forget all the excitement we gave Mrs. Mereand and vice versa? We picked up Mike in fourth grade. It took us awhile to decide if that was a mistake, but now we are glad to have him along. After a year with Mrs. Heath, we went on to Mr. Hyde. Fifth grade was another good year. We all liked Mr. Hyde, even when he got angry and threw his pen at us. Somehow we survived and moved on to sixth grade. Mr. Walker gave us no trouble and we tried to give him no trouble either. It worked out fine, and soon we were on our way to being “big kids” in junior high school. Mrs. Guga took care of us in seventh grade and liked us so well that she came back for eighth grade, too. Sometime during those years, we picked up a little short kid called Rick Maitland. He looked us over and decided he liked us. We adopted Miss Quackenbush in ninth grade as our class advisor. She faithfully spurred us on through our fudge and cookies sales, and the money just kept coming in. Along with it came Kay, our newest class member. We will never forget tenth grade. That was the year of the English teachers. Never before has a class had so many English teachers in such a short period of time. We also had our paper drives that year. Unfortunately, some of us don’t care if we ever see a bundle of magazines or a pick-up truck again. Finally, we got good old Mary Taylor and Gordon Benham that year. In eleventh grade we made more money on several successful dances. We had a donkey basketball game that was hilarious. In the spring we had our Spring Dance which was our version of the annual Junior Prom. It was a big success. In twelfth grade we acquired Mrs. Lamb as our new advisor and Mark, Roxanne, and Marta as our new classmates. We all worked hard selling magazines and being “slaves”, and now we are looking forward to our Senior Trip in the spring. As graduation draws near, we wish to thank all those people at H.C.S. who have made our years truly unforgettable. We es- pecially thank Mr. Lamb who has been a great prinicpal to us, and we wish him all the luck in the world. The Class of 1971 12
