Hilltop Highlights Volume VIII 1970 Henderson Central School Henderson, New York Foreword At the beginning of every new decade there is a strong tendency to gaze into the well known crystal ball in an attempt to prophesy the future. We, too, are tempted to make predictions and forecasts as to what the future has in store. But hold on. Is is the function of a school annual to predict the future or is it our role to review the past? A sober analysis convinces that the latter is correct. Our task is to portray the persons and events outstanding in this past school year. For mark, by the time you have this issue of the yearbook, the 1969-70 year will be nearly over. So we are hopeful that Volume VIII of Hilltop Highlights will provide an ac- curate and reasonably complete record of the school year fast drawing to a close. We would like to believe that this yearbook will bring forth some pleasant memo- ries-memories you will cherish more and more as time goes on. Leave the prognostications to the experts: we’d just like to have you see what life was like at Henderson Central School in the year 1969-70. Quackenbush The highest honor a yearbook staff can bestow is the dedication of an issue to a friend and benefactor of Hen- derson Central School. This year’s staff takes great pleasure in dedicating Volume VIII of Hilltop Highlights to Miss Quackenbush. For more years than most of us can remember, business education at Henderson Central School and Miss Quackenbush have been nearly synonymous. Now at last we appreciate your high standards in teaching, Miss Quackenbush, along with your insistence on excellence, your sense of humor and willingness to help others. We are proud to dedicate this book to you in token of our respect and admiration. The Staff FRONT ROW: V. Ramsdell. B. Nichols. J. Lane, J. Whitney, C. Shutts, L. Taylor. SECOND ROW: Mr. Caster, E. Yearbook Staff This year the senior class, under the guidance of Mr. Howlett, threw its support solidly behind the production of the yearbook. Likewise, Mr. Caster, our senior English teacher, entered the act with new and unusual ideas for improving the school annual. Student leadership roles were played by Robert Miller and Linda Taylor who were elected to the offices of editor and business manager respectively. As this is written, we are in the process of trying to meet publisher’s deadlines. Perhaps this is a good thing. We might never get the job done unless there were deadlines to meet! Naturally, we hope you enjoy this year’s version of the yearbook. True, there may be some errors and omissions but, we hasten to point out, they were not in- tentional. So happy reading to you and thanks for your support in making the ideas con- tained herein a reality. The Yearbook Staff FRONT ROW: Hazel Babcock, Helen Quimby, President ; Maxine Moore. We started our hard and long struggle to acquire an education. Seven hardy seniors have endured these vital years of our lives at Henderson Central School: Linda, Marvin, Elaine Scott, Janice, Virginia, John, and Feme. How can we ever forget the hard mats, the building blocks, the wooden shoe that we learned to tie on, and our new kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Pierce? After we grew used to having so many kids around, we progressed to first grade where we picked up Larry. We all remember the great honor of sitting on the big yellow birthday chair when “the big day” rolled around. Also, we had our first thrills when we could recognize words. Second grade was a most memorable year to us due to Mrs. Vorce’s techniques which were fun while at the same time in- structional. We remember the shoe-string thermometer, our band days with xylophones, tambourines, etc, our first French lessons and especially our first performance, the May Day, featuring “Hansel and Gretel.’ After untangling ourselves from the Maypole, we moved on to grade three. Now we were grown up enough to sit in the cafeteria with the older grades. We learned to add and subtract quickly, thanks to Mrs. Mereand’s flash cards. We found Paul waiting for us when we climbed up another notch. We learned responsible habits by tending to special duties. We all took turns at board-erasing, flag-attending, message-carrying, etc. Mr. Hyde’s grade was intensified by the lively squabbles among the girls. We also recall the weekly spelling bees and the numerous pats on the back. Here David Henchen and Joy were added to our group. Now that we were the top dogs in the downstairs department, we took great advantage and enjoyed ourselves immensely by being captains and leaders in sports and other areas. Humbly we entered 7th grade. There we immediately won the approval of all the teachers by being quiet and cooperative. Jim sneaked in and became a member of our class. Coach Wheeler’s life stories carried us through 8th grade, while we learned about astronomy, magnetism, etc. Somehow we picked up Bob as we shuffled along. Our class made a great start in the savings for our trip by cooperating in our fudge and cookie sales. Since we became ex- perts in candy, we held a spring candy sale and added even more money. Eric, Ted, and Dave Laird joined our melting pot. The dissection of mud puppies and woodchucks accentuated 1 Oth grade biology. Now Beverly and Elaine Caruso joined our happy class. The paper drives will live on in our minds. Did anyone ever figure out what caused the leak” in the ceiling while we were tying papers? Our ambitious class supplied everyone in sight with stationery in our Junior year. After holding a few dances, we drew up plans for our prom, “The Enchanted Sea,” where we decorated the gym with fish, driftwood, a ship wreck, and even a skele- ton. We’ll always remember the party afterwards. The water was cold and wet on the Island, wasn’t it, girls? No one escaped us as we embarked on our senior year selling magazine subscriptions. It was worth it: S400. profit. Our play, “The Skeleton Walks,” took a lot of time and patience, but it brought us S200. Now we are looking forward to our trip and graduation. As our days in Henderson Central School are closing, we wish to thank our teachers and counselors for making our youthful years memorable. The Class of 1970 7 18 UNDERCLASSMEN FRONT ROW: M.
