B mm m HILLTOP HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME V 1967 HENDERSON CENTRAL SCHOOL FOREWORD A yearbook is a record of the past year, and in the pages of this fifth edition of Hilltop Highlights we have tried to record a portion of our school life during the 1966-67 year. Within these pages you will see our people in the news, a cross section of our activities and a special section devoted to the seniors. Herein pictured are the people who make our school run, along with both formal and informal shots of those for whom it runs. Yearbook time is a time for reminiscing. A look into the past of our Alma Mater reveals that just 35 years prior to the issuance of this yearbook, April 4, 1932, to be exact, Henderson Central School first opened its doors to the youth of our community. Since then some 323 have graduated from high school, of whom approxi- mately 71% earned Regents Diplomas, 301 earned Preliminary Certificates until their discontinuance in 1959. One hundred thirty- seven older students have earned their MV28S Blue Cards in driver education since this course was added in 1957. But none of the staff who served the new Henderson Central School back in 1932 re- mains. Change is apparent in any school's history, and ours is no ex- ception. But certain aspects of a school, its basic concepts and ideals, must remain constant. What will the next 35 years bring? The only thing of which we can be certain is the transition into a brand new century—the 21st. It is the sincere wish of the staff that those who may possibly read this yearbook in 2002 will find an accurate record of H.C.S. for the year 1966-67. 2 DEDICATION Some people serve their fellow men in the grandiose, spectacular manner; others accomplish the same results by a kindly word, a helping hand and an ear turned to the troubles, real and imagined, of others. Mrs . Horton, our school nurse, belongs in the latter category. Who of us students has not had the benefit of Mrs. Horton's healing touch to a bump or a bruise? Who has not left her office feeling that the world in general and school in particular were not such bad places after all because here was a person willing to hear us out? Who of us has not felt her kindly influence in the clinic, the cafeteria, the library and even in our own home ? To you, Mrs. Horton, we dedicate with grateful hearts Volume V of Hilltop Highlights. In this small way we are trying to say thank you for all that you have done for all of us. The Staff 4 FRONT ROW: L. Vorce, S. Ramsdell, Business Manager; K. Lane, Editor; J. Basar, E. Moore. SECOND ROW: B. Murray, L. Lane, E. Gutierrez, J. Benjamin, Mr. Lamb, F. Babcock, M. Vroman, K. Bennett, V. Rams- dell. YEARBOOK STAFF The Yearbook faces two major problems: the actual production of the school annual and earning the necessary money to pay for it. We are proud of our tradition of not selling advertising to finance our Yearbook. Also we are grateful to the Student Council for helping make ends meet last year. We hope eventually to become a self-sustaining activity. This year we had an earlier deadline to meet for our publisher. Fortunately, many of the staff were willing to remain after school and assist with the typing, pasting, and other tasks necessary for com- pletion of the book. The staff wishes to take this opportunity to thank all who have helped in any way to make Volume V of Hilltop Highlights a reality. 5 The Staff FRONT ROW: Mrs. William Quimby, Secretary,• Mrs. Lloyd Fralick, President; Mrs. Ralph Babcock, Treasurer; Mrs. John Whitney, Historian. SECOND ROW: Kenneth Lamb, Second Vice President; DeWitt Hubbard, First Vice President. PARENT-TEACHER HOARD OF ASSOCIATION EDUCATION FRONT ROW: Mrs. William Quimby, Cordon Benjamin, President; Mrs. Truman Moore. SECOND ROW: Francis Sliter, Truman Whitney, Vice President. FRONT ROW: Mrs. Fishel, Second Grade; Mrs. Lam, Art; Mr. Hyde, Fifth Grade and Elementary Supervisor; Mrs. Hess, Kindergarten; Mrs. MacCall, Music. SECOND ROW: Mr. Walker, Sixth Grade; Mr. Wheeler, Physi- cal Education and Science; Mr. Welsh, Industrial Arts; Miss Stevens, First Grade; Mrs. Mereand, Third Grade; Mrs. Heath, Fourth Grade. FACULTY FRONT ROW: Mrs. Horton, Nurse; Mrs. Montague, Secretary; Miss Quackenbush, Business; Mrs. Guga, English; Miss Niciu, Science. SECOND ROW: Mr. Guga, Social Studies; Mr. Armstrong, Languages; Mrs. Pope, Home- making; Mr. Inman, Guidance and Driver Education; Mr. Kelley, Mathematics. Mrs. Thomas, one of our five Co- operative Board teachers, divides her time between this school and Belleville on a 2-3 day basis per week. In addition to being the school's dental hygienist Mrs. Thomas serves as advisor to the cheerleading squads. As JoAnn Shutts, class of 1963, she was editor of our first yearbook. JO ANN S. THOMAS ARTHUR S. INMAN Mr. Inman, guidance counselor and teacher of driver education, spends half his time at H.C. S., the other half at Mannsville-Manor Central. Most students are anxious to take driver education at the earliest opportunity. They also find in Mr. Inman a friendly and able counselor to whom they can turn for help in higher education and career planning or just every-day problems. SENIORS CLASS HISTORY In September of 1954, Mrs. Hess, Kindergarten teacher, was greeted at the door by twelve smiling faces. Out of the original twelve, five still remain: Elsa, Jackie, Karen, Nelson, and Steve. After learning things like reading readiness, tying our shoes and being quiet at nap time, we passed to first grade. Miss Stevens was patient in teaching us our arithmetic; also in this grade we gained Mary Vroman. Then we passed to second grade and Mrs. Vorce where we acquired another member of our present class, Matthew Fleury. How can we ever forget our May Day program when Matthew placed the crown on Elsa's head and it fell down over her eyes! Third grade was an unusual year because our class got to listen in on the fourth grade lessons. This happened because Mrs. Heath was responsible for teaching both grades. Our fourth grade year was spent in the same room and under the same teacher, Mrs. Heath. Our fifth grade year was an eventful one because we were the first class at H. C. S. to have Mr. Hyde. We will all remember our sledding party and all the projects we undertook, such as the square dance exhibit for Mr. Spencer, the music teacher. Next came sixth grade and Mrs. Montague. Here two members of the present class were added: Lynn Vorce, and Gary Richardson. We will long remember Mrs. Montague's surprise birthday party and the Koolaid that was spilled all over the floor. Then seventh grade, the big year that we went upstairs to find a new and different system of classes, will be remembered by all of us. We met many new teachers and became completely confused by the constant movement from room to room. Here, too, we added members to our present class: Sandra Ramsdell, Jack Benjamin, David Vorce, and Larry Englert. Eighth grade was not an eventful year as far as doing anything special, but we all looked forward to becom- ing Freshmen. Our Freshman year was dotted with fudge and cookie sales under the capable guidance of Mrs. Whitehead. Here two members of our present class were added: Gary Smith and John Gilligan. Our Sophomore year was one of bustling activity. Two paper drives and a dance featuring the Statics were held. Miss Quackenbush, our present class advisor, joined us here. Our Junior year was also packed full of activities such as a stationery sale, several dances and the prom. We will all remember our prom, Evening in Paris, and the fun we had gathering all kinds of decorations from nu- nerous places. Margaret MacCall and Marilyn Billings joined our class here. Our Senior year has been marked with an even bigger excitement of activity from our car washes, our play, magazine sale, the donkey basketball game, to our dances and our senior trip. All of these have filled our senior year at H. C. S. with much joy. As graduation approaches, we will all look back and remember the good times (and some bad times) packed into thirteen short years of our lives. VOCATIONAL STUDENTS All students at the Area Vocational Center work with tools and equipment peculiar to the vocation for which they are preparing. Some may use the tools retired to overhaul the engine of a snowblower, while others develop skill on the electric typewriter. Another group works with the tools of the building trades, and still another class, including some of our H.C.S. girls, are mastering the skills and techni- ques required of a beautician. In this the second year of our A.V.C. participation students have accepted the new program en- thusiastically. Basic subjects such as English and social studies are studied in the forenoon. Then after an early lunch students board bus No. 14 with Mr. Nichols as driver for the tip to Watertown. Classes are held at the Senior High School, Case Junior High, Conde Building and Lansing Street School. Sec- ond year students of practical nursing attend full time and perform the practical phases of their program at Mercy and Good Samaritan Hospitals. Missing from the picture above are Patricia Greer and Eileen DeLaVergne, both in the second year nursing class; also, Ronald Babcock, another post graduate, who is taking carpentry II. A THLETICS L. With linesmen Gary Richardson, Larry Englert, Matt Fleury, and Gary Smith paying aggressive soccer, Dave Vorce booting the ball well from fullback position, Frank Bettinger kicking accurately from halfback position, and Steve Shaver making several saves as team goalie, the Blue Devils enjoyed a winning soccer season, ending in a fourth place position in the nine-team Frontier League. Dick Sliter, Harold Hays, Gary Shutts, and Steve Quimby rounded out the eleven-man squad with much capable help from the reserves.
