HENDERSON CENTRAL SCHOOL HENDERSON, NEW YORK Foreword Each year we gain a little. For one, it may be an idea or a philosophy. For another it may be a friend or a memory of a good time. The purpose of Hilltop Highlights is to record these ideas, friends, and memories and save them for all to share. Through the pictures contained here everyone can remember thrilling moments in a basketball game or meet a person coming to Henderson Central School for the first time this year. Hilltop Highlights, '65, is of special importance to the Senior Class, for it provides a summing up of their last, most important year. For these stu- dents who will so soon be separated, it is a link with the past, a memory in handy form. Each year, also, the staff of Hilltop Highlights gains a little. From each past issue we have gained knowledge and experience, and we sincerely hope that you, the reader, will find our efforts of each year more pleasing than those of the year before. 2 Contents Seniors Classes Athletics Activities Dedication Gladys B. Montague The yearbook staff takes great pleasure in dedicating Volume III of Hilltop Highlights to Mrs. Gladys Montague. Unfortunately, you may have trouble finding her to offer your con- gratulations, since she is constantly on the go. You might try letting your makeup slip become overdue, or perhaps stopping her after one of the study halls she monitors. If you're a class treasurer, simply mention it to her while she handles your money affairs. Haven't caught up with her yet? Try the supply room; she may be running off P.T.A. flyers or lunch menus . Wait, I can hear the famous high speed typing which awes every’ fledgling business student. Dash into the office quickly before the telephone rings. While you're there, add my thanks for the genuine concern which Mrs. Montague has for every student in Henderson Central School 4 Yearbook Staff FRONT ROW: K. Lane, E. Yerden, C. Billings, L. This was the year that Eileen worried Miss Mayhew by sleeping through play period one afternoon. And how many times did we hear her say, You've got that boot on the wrong foot! After wearing out Miss Mayhew, we descended upon first grade and Miss Stevens. There Nancy Grandjean took up the cause by refusing to drink her milk, and Susan Vroman, who joined us that year, wouldn't say her alphabet. In second grade Mrs. Vorce tried unavailingly to find someone, anyone, with a sense of rhythm, and finally fastened upon Danny Cornwall as making the best of a bad situation. This was the year of the un- forgettable May Day Program, in which Suzanne was the Queen with a broken arm. In third grade we were moved upstairs to remove our bad influence from the fourth graders. There we engaged in life-and-death basketball dribbling and checker contests. This was the year that our roving cor- respondent, Chick Glessing, joined us. We thought our move was permanent, but next year, to our disgust, we were back downstairs. Bill Crowder joined us just in time for the Halloween Play. In fifth grade a boy joined who was later to be known as Mrs. Shearer's little darling-Peter Q Quimby. We had a birthday Party for Mrs. Montague and thought we had finished her off, but to our surprise she sur- vived and was back the next year to continue our education. And who could forget that memorable play, This Is Your Life, Virginia? At last! Now we were upstairs to stay! Seventh grade was full of excitement. Coach Wheeler entertained us with his stories about World War II, and Mrs. Shearer described the horrible punishments we could expect if we didn't do our work. That year we were introduced to Mr. Rose who taught us Social Studies and chap- eroned us on our trip to Albany. The following year we added two new girls, Pat Rhodes and Carol Edwards. Finally we became the Class of '65. As lowly Freshmen we conducted innumerable fudge and cookie sales and got the movies that no one else wanted. Cindy Billings joined us, as did our class advisor, Mr. Hierneisen. Some inspired soul suggested a car wash and who could forget that soapy, drenched riot? As Sophomores we carted back a whole truckload of heavy paper, and visions of hundred dollar bills danced before us, but we discovered we couldn't sell it! Remembering our successful car wash in 9th grade, we held another one, but our luck has vanished with good weather and we made a grand total of $6. So we gave up and became Juniors. Choosing the color scheme for our Prom, Paradise Island, caused endless arguments. No- body thought royal purple and ice blue looked good together. One of our talking alligator's eyes wouldn't light, but thanks to Bill and Chick, our electricians, he was soon back in shape and ready to announce the King and Queen candidates. We all had fun getting ready for the Prom as well as cleaning up after it. Does anyone remember the boy who contracted the measles the next day? Finally we arc Seniors in our last year of school. In September we began practice for the play, Wonder Boy, to be presented in October. It wasn't exactly a hit for various reasons, although everyone had fun doing it. Following the play the cast was invited to a party at Klod's. We have sponsored many successful dances this year, and can hardly wait for our trip during East Vacation. Thanks is given to all those teachers who have tried so hard to make this, our last year, a year we shall never forget. 15 B A B r p i x AND P I X I E S CLASSES FRONT ROW: F. Edwards, V. Briggs, R. These pupils sing as if they enjoyed it -- and they really do! Meeting only once a week for a half hour period, these talented musicians from grades 5 and 6 demonstrate what can be accomplished when interest, enthusiasm and desire prevail, guided, of course, by Mrs. MacCall. 37 This and That From Here and There KNEELING: R. Cornwall, Coach Clifford Wheeler. 1964 Sectional Basketball For the fourth year in a row Coach Cliff Wheeler s Henderson Central School Blue Devils reached the finals of the Class D Sectional Competition. Henderson lost the Class D Championship Game of Section III to Brookfield Central by a 51-40 score. The game was the first one of a five-card program at the Syracuse War Memorial. The first period of the game was hard fought and closely contested as Brookfield pulled out to an 18-14 lead. The difference in size took its toll in the second period, as Brookfield outscored the locals 14-5 to take a 32-19 halftime lead. Henderson started the second half with a burst that cut Brookfield's lead temporar- ily, but the score at the end of the third quarter was 39-28. Both teams scored 12 points in the last period as good sound basketball was displayed by all participants. James Burr, team high scorer with 16 points, was aided by Art Yerden with 9, Dave Roof 5, Gary Richmond 4, Jack Ditch 3, Dave Cornwall 2, and Gary Flagg 1. Brook- field pushed in 16 field goals and Henderson 15. The opponents, however, made 19 points from the foul line and Henderson 10. Henderson ended the season with a fine 12 and 7 record. 39 SEATED: Patricia Rhodes, Carol Edwards, editor, Gerald Nichols, Hugh Laird. Roundup Several years ago a contest was held to select a name for our school mimeographed newspaper. H.C.S. Roundup was chosen, and for over a decade students and parents have eagerly awaited each new issue of this publication. Again this year the staff is composed of the members of the twelfth year vocational business class. Four issues arc published each year to keep pupils and public aware of activities and happenings on the hilltop. An interesting phase of our organization is the exchange of papers conducted with other nearby schools.
