HILLTOP HIGHLIGHTS HENDERSON CENTRAL SCHOOL HENDERSON, NEW YORK FOREWORD In this, the second yearbook of Henderson Central School, you will find some of the highlights of 1963-1964. The final basketball game with Belleville, the Senior trip, the All-County Concert, all can be recalled by a picture and a word. And so it is hoped that each of you will find here something which will bring back an es- pecially warm memory. The response to the first yearbook was gratifying. From the mis- takes and successes made then we have gained knowledge, and we sincerely hope that you will find this issue even better. The Staff 2 YEARBOOK STAFF F RONT ROW: M. Nichols, Secretary; J. WHEELER Waving a towel over his head, his red socks flashing, a man shouts encourage- ment to his team. Who else could it be but Coach Wheeler who has enlivined his science classes for years with his tales of World War 2. Seriously, however, the yearbook staff of 1964 is proud to dedicate Volume II of Hilltop Highlights to Coach who does a remarkable job of enriching our minds and our bodies through informative classes and friendly, competitive sports. 5 FRONT ROW: Mrs. Truman Moore; Mrs. Grant Shaver, President; Gordon Benjamin, Vice president. HIGHLIGHTS FROM domiH CLASS HISTORY On a bright September morning in 1951, twenty-three kindergartners became Mrs. Hess's little darlings. Not only were the doors opening into a new world for the children but also for our new principal, Mr. Lamb. Even though Jack Ditch frightened Mrs. Hess into a new early gray hairs by getting paint in his eye, she was able to advance us to first grade and Miss Stevens. No major catastrophes happened in first grade except that Gary Richmond knocked out Alice Besaw's two front teeth. Mrs. Vorce was next in line. That year we were the stars of the May Day program. Nancy David, who is now in Belleville, was the queen. Mrs. Vorce had a canary that used to fly around the room and sometimes his presence was felt on our heads. By the time we were ready to enter third grade with Mrs. Bonnett, who is now Mrs. Heath, we had lost a few members and also gained a few. Nancy Rathbun, Bob Shearer, and Pat Kennedy were now in our happy clan. Another surprise was awaiting us when Mrs. Bonnett introduced us to Pat Babcock and Linda Phillips who would now be in our class. Third grade was our first year in the lunch room and we created quite a problem by always losing our lunch tickets. By the time we were fourth graders, Mrs. Bonnett had taught us how to add, subtract, multiply and divide quite rapidly. Mary Hess and Mary Collins also decided to join our class that year just so they could take part in the fourth grade Halloween Play. Before we knew it Mrs. Montague had taken full charge of us as fifth graders. She kept us busy that year making parts-of-spcech booklets. We thought we knew all this until Mrs. Stevens asked us the difference be- tween a noun and verb! When we were sixth graders we had the honor of being upstairs. We were the first class ever to be moved upstairs before seventh grade. Mrs. Mereand was our new teacher. Our sixth year was very eventful. It began by Gary Flagg's joining our class. The next events that followed were the Science Fair in Watertown, an International Dinner that our parents attended, and a play following entitled No Suit for Bill. The highlight of the play was Bob Shearer with Mary Hess's suit on! We were now entering junior high and had the feeling of seniors. Upon entering seventh grade, we became Mrs. Shearer's dimpled darlings and Mr. Rice's favorite history students. Mrs. Stevens though she would have to be our homeroom teacher for two years, but Mr. Miller rescued her from that strenuous task in the eighth grade. At last we were Freshmen and Mr. Lamb was the only person brave enough to become our class advisor. During the year we had many fudge and cookie sales in preparation for our senior trip. We were now the Class of 64. In our Sophomore year as a money making venture we bombarded the town with H. C. S. Cook Books. Any- one who was dissatisfied with a cook book could always give it to the Sophomore paper drive. During our Sophomore year Coach Wheeler kept our biology classes alive with World War II stories. Our Junior year began w'ith a new face added to the faculty. It was none other than our beloved red-head, Mrs. Pope. George Clark also came to join us. We started our class activities with an overwhelming sale of stationery. Then came the choosing of class rings. They were what most every junior received for Christmas that year. Our next big event was our Junior Prom, Moonlight and Roses. Never will we forget the cookies, cream cheese, sandwiches, and punch that were left over. It was the punch that helped the boys win the Spring Carnival! At last we were Seniors! Our year started with a gigantic magazine campaign. Linda Phillips was our top salesgirl. After our campaign was over we all celebrated with a hayride at which Johnny Whitney presided with a tractor and wagon. A certain person's garden was missing a few tomatoes for this event and our English teacher's would have been but between having lights on and Gary and Jim seeing a skunk we couldn't find it. Next on our program was the Senior Play, The Sky's the Limit. Mrs. Stevens directed us through many practices and helped make our play a big success. As our yearbook goes to press we are awaiting our senior trip. We are now' sixteen in number. There will be many happy memories from good old H. C. S. that we will take with us in June. We wish to thank Mr. Lamb, the Faculty, and the Staff for making these last thirteen years of our lives some of the best that we will ever hope to have. The Class of 64 FRONT ROW: P. Rhodes, S. PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION Over 30 years of promoting the welfare of children and youth in home, school, church and community. That is the service record of the Henderson Parent-Teacher Association. Year in and year out this organization in an unobtrusive but effective way continues its good works of promoting student health, encouraging the art of public speaking, honoring excellence in the fields of English and good citizenship and, soon to be launched, awarding scholarships to aid local graduates in securing a higher education. In addition to a provocative program the monthly meeting features a business session which includes awarding of attendance banners and last, but in time only, refreshments and good fellowship. The high flying Henderson quint posted A 13-4 record before going into the Section III finals and finished in the Frontier League B Division as well as second in the B Division play-offs. Henderson was crowned North area D Champions as a re- sult of wins over Glenfield 48-33, and Lyons Falls by a 46-34 score. However, the Henderson squad failed in their third attempt to win the Class D sectional title as they lost to Oppenheim Central School by a 47-28 score. The team was in the game for three quarters and even led early in the third period. The winners shot very well in last half, while the locals couldn't seem to hit and as a result lost the lead and the ball game. John Whitney led Henderson in scoring with 11 points as seniors Captain Bill Dunbar, Frank Phillips, Allen Maitland, and Whitney played their last ball game for the Blue Devils. John Besaw and Ray Gilbert were reserve seniors who saw thier last action for the Henderson team. The fine Henderson club made a total of 966 points in the 18 games played with an average of 53. 7 per game. Meanwhile, the locals held their opponents to a 43. 4 point average. James Burr was high scorer for the team with 293 points and john Whitney followed closely with 251. Awards are sponsored by the Student Council for excellence in sports and music. Like- wise each senior receives ten dollard toward his Washington trip expenses. 39 AUTOGRAPHS
