HILLTOP HIGHLIGHTS Henderson Central School Henderson, New York Volume I 1963 FORE WORD Trim the wick. Flick the light switch. Train the spotlight. These acts usually have but one purpose: to illuminate a given area and thus bring into prominence something upon which it is desired to focus attention. So it is hoped that this, the first yearbook of Henderson Central School, will acquaint you with some of the activities and personalities of our Alma Mater during the 1962-63 year. It is our sincere hope that you, the reader of these pages, will share some of the pleasure that was experienced by those of us who collected and assembled the material contained herein. The Staff 2 Staff Seniors Classes Activities Sports DEDICA TION Jessie N. Montague In recognition of your more than forty-five years of service as a teacher in Henderson schools, in appreciation of your dedicated ef- forts in bringing out the best of the boys and girls who studied under you, and in gratitude for our privilege of once coming under your guidance and good influence, we the staff of Henderson's first year- book, humbly and respectfully dedicate Volume One of Hilltop High- lights to you together with the sincere wish that you may enjoy a long and happy retirement. 4 IN MEMORIAM Roy V. Cornwall Our little community was stunned by the sudden and accidental death of Roy V. Cornwall on October 30, 1962. A member of the Henderson Board of Education since 1955, Mr. Cornwall had served as its President during the 1959-60 school year. Nor did he confine his interest in the school merely to the policy making body. Mr. Cornwall attended and participated in all activities available to parents and patrons of the Henderson Central School District. His loss has left a void in our midst that will not be soon or easily filled. We shall always remember Roy Cornwall as a friend -- the man with the ready smile, the kindly heart, and the helping hand. 5 YEARBOOK STAFF SEATED: Ellen Lamb, Sybil Kenney, Business Manager; Jo Ann Shutts, Editor; Eileen DeLaVergne, STANDING: Shirley Kepner, Cynthia Billings, Alice Besaw, Linda Ramsdell, June Roof, Mr. Lamb, Douglas Shear, Barbara Nichols, Carol Edwards. 6 SEATED: Jean Hess, Kindergarten: Kathryn Stevens, Grade 1; Jessie Horton. SOCIAL STUDIES CLUB The Social Studies Club is organized to accomplish three main aims: one, it gives the member added knowledge concerning all the phases of the social studies; two, the club provides recreational op- portunities; and three, it trains leaders and presents social skills that can be used throughout an individual's life. Social Studies Clubbers attend meetings once each month. One part of the meeting is devoted to a program and business session. The second part is set aside for recreational activities. All students in grades nine through twelve are encouraged to attend these meetings. Members can also join the Yorkers Club. This is an affiliation with the New York State Historical Association. Yorker members receive The Yorker magazine and free admission to die Farmer’s Museum and Fenimore Cooper House at Cooperstown, New York. Tlie officers for 1962-1963 are James Burr, President; Suzanne Ramsdell, Vice President; Sybil Kenney, Secretary; Barbara Nichols, Treasurer; Linda Ramsdell, Historian; Carol Edwards and John Besaw, Recreation Directors. 26 FRONT ROW: J. The Henderson Parent-Teacher Association observed its thirtieth anniversary during November of this school year. The unit enrolls upwards of one hundred members annually, and every year presents an honorary life membership by virtue of its contributions to the Jenkins Memorial Scholarship Fund. Special projects sponsored by the local unit include administration of a revolving health fund for use in remedial citizenship and donations of cash awards for the high school speaking contest. This year the Henderson P.T.A. was honored by having a past president, Mrs. Marston Smith, selected as director of the North central district of the F.T.A. One of the first projects of the Henderson P.-T.-A. was the establishing of a hot lunch program -- an operation still going strong today.
