IN MEMORIAM DR. rl. T. P. CALKINS, AB., MS., Pd.D. 11877-19423 f NE of the guiding powers behind Hempsteacts Puhlic School system for a long period of time was Dr. .lohn T. P. Callcins. He was instrumental in the construction of Hempstead High and furnished the plan lor the modern one story grade schools where education gets its lirsl start. After the huildings had lmeen created, he next proceeded to install the super- visory system lo malae them worlc. But some ot his hest accomplishments were yet to come. ln 1935 he helped the dream of Hofstra Col- lege lmecome a reality. He had concrete plans that would enahle those eager to learn to olntain college level instruction in high school. This is important to every high school student, for it goes a long way to- ward solving the problem of college expenses. The tact that Dr, Callcins considered education a tremendously important factor in the progress of a nation may he seen from his dedication of our school: . . to the unnumhered throng of children who here will gather lcnowledge, virtue, lcindness. reverence, and hope-this house is dedicatedf'

S well as continuing the fine jola which they have alwaysdone in communicating lcnowledge to the sometimes unwilling students, the faculty have talcen their place in the war etlqort. From air-raid wardens to First-aid instructors, they are doing their hit, and we are proud of them, Already more than occupied with curricular activities, each has managed to Find time to do something to help. We present them to you with respect and admiration-the faculty. HE Colonial belongs, essentially, to the seniors. It is their hoolcg the Final record of four eventful years. Soon, many of them may he lighting for their country, for they are the generation upon which American depends. We hope that the Colonial will he a valued and permanent reminder of their years at H. H. S. H Of no less importance, of course, are the other classes who will he talcing over the heritage left to them. The Colonial serves as a trihute to them as well as to the seniors. H. S. Otters innumerable opportunities to any student who wishes to participate ' in some extra-curricular activity. lts many cluhs, organizations, and service squads provide excellent training and experience in leadership, initiative, and cooperation. This is especially important now, when these qualities are essential to a good citizen. Whatever your interest or hohhy, you will find some extra-curricular activity in which you may par- ticipate. These organiaations are time-honored institutions of H. H. S., and essential assets to student life. N lceeping with the times, a military note has heen added to sports in the form of com- mando training for the hoys. Physical exercise is especially important nowadays, when strong hodies, as well as minds, will he needed for the winning of the war and the suh- sequent rehuilding of our democracy. The commandos, hraving extreme weather and almost impassahle ohstacles, have gained experience which will he valualole in the future. lndeed, from foothall to badminton, each sport is not only a recreation-it is a necessity. N the closing section of the Colonial, we have assemlaled a number of those familiar scenes which give H. H. S. its own particular atmosphere, These have been placed among the ads, which are a most essential part of our yearhoolc. We are sincerely grateful to our advertisers and are confident that our readers will patronize them at every opportunity.
