It was through Mr. Maure's suggestion and the voluntary aid of Miss Ratelle and Miss Beattie that the publication of a Junior year book was under- taken. The Editor-in-Chief of the book was Renwick Hurry and the staff consisted of twelve members. The first Colonial was dedicated to Superintendent of Schools, Mr. J. T. P. Calkins, and a note of appreciation for the splendid work which Mr. Maure had done in the new school was included. That pioneer year book of 1923 was a great achievement and was a fine start for the volumes which have followed. The staff of the Colonial, '24, headed by Ira Hanson, was enlarged by 4 members. Miss Beattie and Mr. Shifferdecker were official Faculty Advisers, and Miss Snyder, Miss Ratelle, and Mr. Kistler also gave their time and efforts toward the success of the book. It was changed in form somewhat, and to accommodate a larger group of sen- iors and a greater number of organizations, was made bigger. It was dedicated to Charles H. Ludlum, Head of the Board of Education, and contained a history by him of the Hempstead Schools from the time of the settlement of Hempstead in 1644. In the following book an interesting ac- count of the High School was given by Miss Nellie F. Munger, to whom the volume was dedicated. This memoir of Miss Munger's twenty years in Hempstead High School was a fitting preface to the story of the school during 1923-1924. There was one faculty adviser, Mr. Howard Goldy, and Fred Miller was Editor-in-Chief. Mr. Howard Goldy supported the staff of the following Colonial also, with Roger Whitman as Editor-in-Chief. The book was dedicated to Miss Eugenia Miller, who had taught in the High School for twenty years. Miss Miller, as had Miss Munger, gave an account of her years in Hempstead. The Colonial, '27, under the faculty guidance of Miss Hilda Roberts inaugurated attractive panel frames for the Senior cuts. The staff, led by Sherwood Silliman, dedi- cated their book to Miss Dorothy Powell. The Colonial, '28, dedicated their book to Miss Grace Sammis Reed. The staff was piloted through one-half the year by Miss Roberts and, after her departure in January, her work was continued by Miss Eastburn. So, through six volumes, the growth of Hempstead High School has been recorded. In 1922 a staff of twelve published a Colonial in which were forty Seniors and three organizations. In 1927, a staff of 28 has published a Colonial in which are 156 Seniors and 21 organizations. Cannot Hempstead be proud of such an increase? Nor have the classes and organizations alone grown. Their growth is the result of a feeling of pride in our school, a desire to make Hempstead High School the finest possible, and the realization of this ideal.
