But noise and bustle of the day G-ive way to quiet, and with night, Falls silence through deserted halls. The shadows steal across the floors, And hide in gloom the empty desks, While ghostly moonbeams light the vacant porch. Then through the halls, with graceful step And laughter light, the Muses come. Released from toil in dog-eared books They gather there in merry mood And revel all the night away, 'Till dawn recalls them to their tasks again. Ah! Would you see the merry group Who gather nightly? Nay, not so, Few may behold it, those alone Whose hearts to beauty are attuned Whose minds on learning are bestowed, May see at night the Spirit of the School. K. C? - O.. lr..-.Q1..33l fE-..l1-.....-..-. - I . A HISTORY OF THE COLONIAL The first edition of the Colonial of Hempstead High School, was published by the class of 1923. It was through Mr. Maure's suggestion and the voluntary aid of Miss Ratelle and Miss Beattie that the publication of a Junior year book was under- taken. The Editor-in-Chief of the book was Renwick Hurry and the staff consisted of twelve members. The first Colonial was dedicated to Superintendent of Schools, Mr. J. T. P. Calkins, and a note of appreciation for the splendid work which Mr. Maure had done in the new school was included. That pioneer year book of 1923 was a great achievement and was a fine start for the volumes which have followed. The staff of the Colonial, '24, headed by Ira Hanson, was enlarged by 4 members. Miss Beattie and Mr. Shifferdecker were official Faculty Advisers, and Miss Snyder, Miss Ratelle, and Mr. Kistler also gave their time and efforts toward the success of the book. It was changed in form somewhat, and to accommodate a larger group of sen- iors and a greater number of organizations, was made bigger. It was dedicated to Charles H. Ludlum, Head of the Board of Education, and contained a history by him of the Hempstead Schools from the time of the settlement of Hempstead in 1644. In the following book an interesting ac- count of the High School was given by Miss Nellie F. Munger, to whom the volume was dedicated. This memoir of Miss Munger's twenty years in Hempstead High School was a fitting preface to the story of the school during 1923-1924. There was one faculty adviser, Mr. Howard Goldy, and Fred Miller was Editor-in-Chief. Mr. Howard Goldy supported the staff of the following Colonial also, with Roger Whitman as Editor-in-Chief. The book was dedicated to Miss Eugenia Miller, who had taught in the High School for twenty years. Miss Miller, as had Miss Munger, gave an account of her years in Hempstead. The Colonial, '27, under the faculty guidance of Miss Hilda Roberts inaugurated attractive panel frames for the Senior cuts. The staff, led by Sherwood Silliman, dedi- cated their book to Miss Dorothy Powell. The Colonial, '28, dedicated their book to Miss Grace Sammis Reed. The staff was piloted through one-half the year by Miss Roberts and, after her departure in January, her work was continued by Miss Eastburn. So, through six volumes, the growth of Hempstead High School has been recorded. In 1922 a staff of twelve published a Colonial in which were forty Seniors and three organizations. In 1927, a staff of 28 has published a Colonial in which are 156 Seniors and 21 organizations. Cannot Hempstead be proud of such an increase? Nor have the classes and organizations alone grown. Under the fine leadership of Kenny Glenn, Hempstead's all-around athlete, the team fought furiously but all went for naught. However, they held the red-jerseyed Flushingites to only one score, this coming at the last minute of the game. HEMPSTEAD, 10, STUYVESANT, 0 Following a defeat at the hands of Flushing, our pigskin chasers adminis- tered a sound set-back to the Stuyvesant aggregation. Captain Glenn and Bus Watterston led the Hempstead attack and were rewarded in the first quarter by a field goal, followed, in the third period, by Watterston's touchdown. The line held firmly and Stuyvesant gained very little through the center. HEMPSTEAD, 9, SOUTHAMPTON, 0 With our team suffering from injuries, but morally strengthened by the victory over Stuyvesant, we went to Southampton and there administered a good beating to the Suffolk County players. During the second quarter, Hempstead earned two points through a safety, and, not long afterwards, Johnny Wolff caught a for- ward pass on Southampton's goal-line and made the only touchdown of the game. HEMPSTEAD, 05 NEW UTRECHT, 25 We knew not what a stone wall we were going against when we met New Utrecht on the home gridiron, October 16. In a mighty rally in the third period, New Utrecht earned all its points and in the last quarter the play was quite even, neither side being able to score. Ley and Heatherton starred for Hempstead. HEMPSTEAD, 265 LYNBROOK, 13 Willing to repeat Hempstead's 1925 vic- tory over Lynbrook, our boys went on the field to prove that they were equal to the task. The teams scored alternately until the count was 13-12, Lynbrook's favor, but touchdowns by Ley and Glenn soon provided the margin for Hempstead's victory. HEMPSTEAD, 0 3 LAWRENCE, 41 Our team proved no match for the 1926 County Champions. Before Hempstead had quite awakened, the first half was over and Lawrence had collected 21 points. During the second half, Law- rence again scored three touchdowns, and might have had more had it not been for the fine work of Captain Glenn and Rocks Ley. HEMPSTEAD, 135 BUSHWICK, 0 On Election Day, our boys met a new opponent in an out-of-town game with Bushwick. Ley made both touchdowns, the first after receiving a thirty-five yard pass from Kenny, and the other by a spectacular fifty yard run. A HEMPSTEAD, 6, GLEN COVE, 7 HEMPSTEAD, 63 FREEPORT, 21 Team! Teaml' Team! Hardly had the echoes of this cheer died away when Hempstead kicked off to Freeport, and the Hempstead fumbles paved Freeport's first two touch- soon afterward, Freeport game was on. the way for downs, and scored again. This was soon followed by only touchdown. No fur- Hempstead's ther scoring occurred. Toward the close of the game, Ray Heatherton inter- cepted a forward pass after which the final whistle blew and the 1926 football season was over, Hempstead having gained four victories and met five defeats. Not enough praise can be given to the substitutes, as well as to Coach Fay, who made our team so successful as to win four victories on so difficult a schedule. l . Though not a championship team, the boys played extremely good ball and won practically all the games played. In spite of the lack of seasoned material at the beginning of the year, our reliable coach, Mr. Fay, turned out a team of which any school would feel proud. The team and the substitutes are to befcongratu- lated-the team for the fine rk it did and the subs for the loyalty sand deter- mination they showed in stayirfg with the squad. .. Harold Manning, a fine player and a veteran of many seasons, was chosen to captain the team. He filled his office ad- mirably and made a fine record in pitch- ing and batting. J acquiss once again held his position at third base and played as efficiently as ever. Glenn, Courtney and McHale, all three veterans, showed real baseball ability and greatly aided the team to establish the fine record it made. Fiola, Dorkins and Leslie Cheshire made good at their respective positions of catcher and first and second basemen. Wolff, Aus- tin Cheshire and Schneider played in the outfield and handled long fiies in great shape. Besides the players, great credit is due to Ellsworth Brown, the manager, and his assistants. Managing a baseball team is no easy job, as most students know. The season started with a victory over Bryant High School by the score of 6 to 2. All the players did well for their first game but Captain Manning was the star of the game. He knocked out a homer and struck out fourteen opposing batters. The next game was a closely fought contest with Lynbrook. Hempstead received sev- eral tough breaks and the visitors man- aged to squeeze in the winning run and end the game with the score 5 to 4 in their favor. Lawrence was next on the list but the game lasted only two innings and then had to be called off because of the illness of a neighbor. Three days later, we beat Baldwin High in an extremely close game, the score being 5 to 4. This victory seemed to inspire the players with success and started a lucky winning streak for Hempstead. We trounced Southside 12 to 3 in a one-sided contest. The next game, with Lawrence, was more closely contested, but the boys managed to pile up eight runs to their opponents' five. The streak continued and in a return game with Lynbrook, the Hempstead nine emerged victorious by the score of 3 to 2. This game avenged our former defeat at the hands of the Lynbrook players. Several other games were played, which only served to swell Hempstead's list of victories. The home team continued to play fine ball and show great ability. We hope that the team of 1927 will be able to show as fine a record as the aggrega- tion of 1926. According to all indications they have a splendid opportunity of doing so. Although several of last year's play- ers have been graduated, there is ample material this year for Mr. Fay to work with. Our next game was played against St. Agnes on our court. Our boys played hard and with suprising team work, so that they scored thirty more points than their opponents. But in the next game our team was to be barely beaten by Lawrence, our old rivals. This narrow margin existed in the next game which was won on the home court by the Manhassett quintet. In the following game, against Lynbrook, we were beaten by the very small margin of two points. About this time our shining center, Beep Cheshire was lost to the team and a very capable substitute for Beep was found in Albert Steuib. However, our team was a little bit shaken up and as a result, dropped the next game to the Free-- port boys. This is not an alibi but an honest fact. That game at Freeport was followed by a defeat on our home court at the hands of Woodmere Academy. In the next game we lost our second game to Lynbrook this season, thus proving Lyn- brook a team worth much recognition. We met the New York Stock Exchange quintet which showed fine team work and speed in defeating us 37-20. Next we met a new rival in Brookyn Tech, and we went down but not without a game fight before their powerful onslaught. In the following game we were again beaten by Southside, this time the score being much better on our part. THEN, we hit our stride. Our first vic- tim was Glen Cove, whose score we trip- led by the fine work of Kenny Glenn and Les Cheshire. Their shots were accurate and their teamwork great. Steuib, Tommy Campagna and Paul Schwitz were also to share in the glory of winning this game. The following Friday we played Mitchell Field and subdued the Army aggregation by the count of 34-26. But we were to lose still another game and this to Jamaica Training, which boasts of a splendidly trained team. Our winning streak was then broken but was started again in the game with Glen Cove the following week. Then we turned the tables on Manhassett and beat them to the tune of 26-14. Well, that was great, but it was still greater when on the following Wednesday we beat Hicksville in an overtime period by the narrow mar- gin of three points. If it had not been for Leslie Cheshire in that game there might have been quite a different story. We won the next and last game of a hectic season, in which we lost eleven games and vaon seven. Our defeats were well earned by better teams and our victories were well earned by clean, hard fighting and game boys, most ably coached by Mr. J. H. Fay. He showed his fine ability on the court against the varsity on March the 3rd, when he was by far the outstand- ing player on the Faculty five which, due to lack of practice, was thoroughly beaten by the varsity. Kenneth Glenn and Leslie Cheshire were by all means the high-lights of the past season's basketball team. Their abi- lity in shooting baskets, combined with the excellent guard work of Campagna and Schwitz, enabled us to win the major part of our victories. Steuib was a very reliable asset to the the team and it was indeed seldom that he did not get the tap-off. H. S., was the motto of the girls' basketball squad this year. They bent their energies to the ulti- mate achievent of this aim and a glance at the schedule will show you how well they have succeeded. With Ida Ryerson leading the team, good will in the squad, hard work at prac- tice and victory in the games were as- sured. A more fitting position than center could not have been assigned to Captain Ryerson. Her ability to secure the tap-05 gave our team an advantage in all the games. Wherever the contest, it was Captain Ryerson who started the ball a-rollin'. By unending good sports- manship and enthusiasm, and by accurate shooting, she kept the team in a fighting spirit and the score in Hempstead's favor. Little Charlotte Oatis, right forward, despite her diminutive size, proved in- valuable to the team. Her pass work and shooting of both field goals and fouls won her the respect and admiration of the rooters. Isabell Cook, left forward, by hard work and alertness added many points to Hempstead's score. Unfortu- nate is the guard whose duty it is to fol- low Cooky . Grace Schweiker, center guard, gained the honors of the guarding zone. With the tenacity of a bull-dog, the speed and endurance devloped by hard practice, and the foresight and alertness of mind which determine an athlete in any field, she held her man down to comparatively few baskets. Alice Schnecko, left guard, whirled through the games, causing much grief to our opponents by intercepting passes and getting the ball swiftly to our forwards. Nell Wattly and Florence Taylor, guards, and Jeanette Streater, forward, worked hard and showed them- 1..,.1...1..1..1uu1m.1un1nu1nu1.svn-nu1l..-un-n---14.11.41-u selves capable players. With speed and good passwork, they contributed much to the success of the team. A great deal of praise is due to the subs -Washburn, Ackley, Ambrose, Pease, Courtney, and Joe Wattly. They dressed for all the games and showed their good sportsmanship in remaining loyal to the team although their chances of play- ing were few. They were ever ready to replace one of the first-string players, and came regularly to practice to offer worthy resistance to the first team. The team played many exciting games this season. Who can forget the thrill received when the team faced Freeport, our ancient enemy? Ida Ryerson endeared herself to the High School by those accu- rate shots which carried our score far above the opponentsl And the Woodmere game! Remember Gracie's wonderful guarding and the per- sonal foul which was called on the Wood- mere forward, when she discovered that even charging couldn't keep Grace from her duty? And that foul shot! The whole Hempstead contingent praying for the basket which would break the tie and place Hempstead ahead! Did we make it? Why of course. With a cool head and the accurate aim which has seldom lost her a foul shot, Charlotte Oatis flipped the ball into the basket two seconds before the final whistle blew. Hempstead, 305 Woodmere, 29. Rah! Rah! Rah! During the entire season, the girls have been defeated only twice. A successful season such as this can be gained only by diligent practice, good sportsmanship, and co-operation.
