The Theater Arts Club is in full swing behind the scenes at nearly all programs presented an the Hempfield stage. Those who have seen these boys in action realize what a tremendous responsibility they assume in taking full charge of sets, lighting, curtains. acoustics. and proper- ties. The boys have spent many hours constructing and painting sets whenever they were needed. Besides learning the many technical arts of production, it is necessary for the members to be familiar with all that is happening on the stage so that perfect timing can be attained. This practical knowledge will be important and useful to them in the future. Seventeen , a musical adapted from a novel by Booth Tarkington, starred Ray Oberholtzer and Sylvia Eshelman in the lead roles. The colorful chorus and dancing team. accompanied by the orchestra, helped make Seventeen a memorable operetta for everyone. Appropriate selections were presented at Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises with the sophomore and junior members of the Chorus saluting the seniors in song with the traditional Speedwell . Calypso 'ver where 99 ' s UPERETTA HSEVENTEENH Seventeen is a delightful story by Booth Tarkington. which takes place in Indianapolis in 1907. Willie Baxter is moonstruck from the moment he meets cute, blonde, and baby-talking Lola Pratt, who has come to the country for a summer visit. The new change in Willie causes his family to worry and wonder. but Jane, his little sister, sees it as a line advantage to get some spiteful joy out of mimicking him. Every other boy in the neighborhood is in competition with Willie for Lola's attention. He goes to great lengths to impress her, and even wears his father's much-too-large formal dress suit whenever he calls on her in the evening. With a talented cast and the superb direction of Mr. Kline. Miss Forney, and Miss Neff, Seventeen will be remembered as another of l-lempfield's very successful operettas. -4 ft' 2 5 Lola Pratt B BB SYLVIA ESHELMAN Willie Baxter RAY OBERHOLTZER Jane Baxter BB B BB B BB ROSIE HOLBEIN Mr. Baxter B Genesis BB Mr. Genesis May Parcher Mr. Parcher LOIS HAAG Mrs. Baxter BBB BBBBB B B BBB DON FORNEY B DICK HOLLINGER B B B B KEN BRABITS BOB EBY Joe Bullitt BBBBB BBBBBBBB BB BB B BB ELAINE EARHART B BBB B B JOHN DENLINGER George Crooper B B BBB BBBB B B BBBB. Although this record is not an impressive one, the girls practiced hard and played their best. Coach Myers did much to build the team and to bolster the girls' enthusiasm. 1 The senior team members, captain Barbara Hackman at center forward, Sue Bender at right fullback. Deanna Pelfley as goalie, and Carol Graybill at fullback, all turned in notable per- formances throughout the season. The team will surely miss them next year. The Junior Varsity displayed enthusiasm as well as a good showing of prospective players for future teams. At the close of the regular hockey season, Hemplield played host to a county-wide hockey playday. ln this daylong tournament the Hempfield girls amassed a total of three wins against one loss and two ties to place third in the standings. The selection of the county All-Star teams highlighted the day. Hempfield was honored with the placing of Barbara Hackman on the first team of All-Stars, and Sue Bender on the second. Bruce Cjerlaeh will again be hitting that net and with the able assistance of Ted Wissler and Fred Rudy. both tirst string boys. along with all the other tine players that are being developed. they should have their eyes on the championship. This year they lost only three league games while winning eleven, which is quite an achievement. Jim Beamesderler led the J. V.'s in scoring and has proved to be an up and coming player. Jerry Springer and Bob Mumma aren't to be left out. however. for their shooting and rebounding were. without a doubt. a major factor in their vie- tories. Mr. Mentzer is certainly looking forward to having these boys on the Varsity Squad. As usual, the whole team showed the spirit and ability needed for a winning team. Coach Charles can certainly be proud of his boys, for they went through the league with only one loss compared to twelve wins. During the season, the boys produced a victory nothing short of sensational by defeating Manheim Central 55 to I. In the play-off game against Elizabethtown for the county title, the boys again proved their tremendous shooting ability. Coming from behind a 10 point deficit, they won 32-28 in one of the most exciting Junior High games seen in Lancaster County in many years. Throughout the season, Rich Sigman, Ted Ayres, and Frank Fair, under the leadership of Rick Horst, proved that Hempfield boys are hard to beat . As we go to press the team has played only two league games, they have shown that they have what it takes to make a fine, workable organization. In the game against Columbia Ted Wissler held the opponents to a no-hit, no-run game through the fifth inning. During the sixth inning Columbia showed its experience and overcame the Black Knights to pull ahead.
