Because he is a friend and help to all students, we give this as a tribute for the work he has done for the students as well as for the general welfare of Hempiield High School. H1 rev FORWARD The class of nineteen hundred fifty-seven has published this year- book depicting our years at Hemp- field. We have learned a great deal from our classes. our teachers, and our fellow students. The academic opportunities available to us have been superiorg the extra-curricular activities have added much to a well-rounded school life. Thus we present our achievements. our good times, our joys and our despairs in this. the Epilogue of l957. We hope that the underclassmen will continue in our place to carry on the wonderful spirit of Hemp- field. CONTENTS Dedication .... .... The Hemplield Joint School Board is made up of only six members and, although this number is comparatively small, their duties and powers are tremendous, and demand much time, energy, and hard work in order to utilize the taxpayers, money to best advantage for the present education of children and future governing generation of these United States. They do such duties as hire teachers, plan budgets and provide for additional buildings when necessary. We, the class of 1957, salute the School Board and say thank you for doing so much for the Hemplield Districts. OFFICERS President . lra K. KaulTman Vice President . J. JefT's brothers and sisters, l-ly, a football enthusiast, Carol, a movie fan, and Wes, a typical teenager, add comedy and proceed to thoroughly confuse their brother. Hy plans to play football on a vacant lot but Lenore, a rich heiress and admirer of Jeff's, insists on having her house built on it the very day of Hy's big game. The results are hilarious, but everything ends well for everybody except Lenore, who gets a horrible case of poison ivy. Karen Andre, Bjorn Faulkner's eth- cient secretary, is standing trial for the murder of her wealthy boss. Young defense attorney, Stevens, gives a very convincing argument as to the improbability of Karen Andre's murdering Mr. Faulkner, she loved him, a supposedly mutual feeling. The conflict arises when Nancy Lee Faulkner, Bjorn's hypocritical widow, also expresses the deep mutual affection which the wealthy couple had for each other. It is very evident throughout the play that Nancy Lee feels deep hatred toward the poised and confident Miss Andre. District Attorney Flint, a very clever lawyer, uncovers a secret plot of Karen Andre and her gangster friend, Larry Regan. They were planning to help,' Bjorn escape to South America with some of his money before his crooked bookkeeping was discovered. Gangsters, detectives, eye witnesses--these characters increase the suspense and mystery involved in the play. The unusual part of the play involves the audience, for the jury was chosen from members of the audience. This jury then formed their verdict according to the evidence they heard presented. The play was a great success under the capable direction of Miss Mary Lee Forney. ffiy SE IUR PLAY y CAST District Attorney I-'lint John Cooper tclever lawyerl His Secretary Winnie Meshey Defense Attorney Stevens Tom Cope ta young but brilliant lawyer! Barbara Hackman, Louise Rliineer, Brenda Coclmauer. Sue Bender. JoAnn Kunkel tmanageri. Because of the inexperience of the team members, Hempiield's hockey team came through with only one win and one tie this seasong however, the girls have practiced hard and have shown a great deal of improvement which means good potential players for the future. Donegal proved to be Hemplield's best match for the girls were the victors in the first game and lost the second by a close score of 3-2. As in past years, Elizabethtown gave the hockeyettes a tough fight and set up a barrier which the team could not break. Grace Miller did a fine job as goalie, and Barbara Hackman provided the necessary speed for a capable center forward. The three seniors, Pat Starr, Janet Charles, and Judy Eby all played good games and will be a great loss to the team next year. The enthusiasm and will to learn demonstrated by the Junior Varsity gives a bright outlook for future Hempfield teams. Coach Houston sparked the team's incentive and worked patiently to build the team into a strong fighting unit. Although their record wasn't very impressive, the Knights always played hard and showed plenty of hustle and good sportsmanship. This hustle and hard playing earned Jay Smith and Bruce Ger- lach places on the second All-Star team and gave Larry Castleman and Jay Shenk honorable mentions. Bruce Gerlach was the leading scorer for the Knights with 5 goals. This will he the second year for Hemplield's tennis teams. and as we go to press. the girls have just won their lirst match against Manheim Central I5-23. The system of competition within both teams is known as the ladder system . This method ol' selecting players allows any interested person to play tennis and have his name placed on the ladder. ln order to advance. the player may challenge either ol' the two people directly preceding him on the ladder. The top live people are the participants in the league matches. This sport has already created a great amount of interest among the students of Hemplield and is proving to be a line asset to the sports pro gram.
