We walk alone in life, each of us With our independent natures, Our separate goals and desires, Our failures and successes. But we do have friends, and We do belong, Even though we often get lost In a mass of bodies. We become an infinitesimal part of a Huge and overwhelming structure. We pass in the halls, We see our friends, and Find ourselves repeating greetings Almost automatically . . . It has become a habit- Sometimes not even knowing to whom we speak. We become too absorbed in our own inner thoughts Our own troubles, our own plans.

The glow of the new harvest moon, Hay stalks and pumpkins, An outhouse too, All bring a glimpse of a different world- The world of Dogpatch, U.S.A. A life more carefree and joyous, A place to enjoy the smallest things of life. The living and dancing and singing, The frolicking and cider-sipping, Cookie-munching, barefoot-walking Life of a hillbilly. A life that brings out the Best and happiest side of everyone- Even the biggest grouch of the year! That funny, squeamish feeling that comes with Dancing over the remains of a pumpkin, The peace of relaxing in a mound of hay, That exhilarating joy of saying I don in Pappy Yokemis slap-happy, down-to-earth, but Sentimental marriage ceremony All contribute to the memory, the thought, Of a left-over night, A souvenir pumpkin, of patches and rags, Faded and worn-out clothes, The thought of an evening to remember- The Sadie Hawkins Dance.
