One place in our school seems to breed havoc. It has a different meaning To all who cross its borders. For the juvenile offender it brings punishment, Detention, or perhaps suspensiong For the lost and bewildered sophomore, It can soothe and bring comfort And help to show the right direction. A teacher may find that Long-awaited filmstrip in His already overstuffed, overflowing mailbox. This is the high school office- The central nervous system of our school. Everything coming in, Going out, or Caught in the middle Must pass through these boundaries- From keys to coffee, ta es to permanent record cards. And who is the head ofp this mighty lace? The principal . . . who ascends his tlfnrone And rules his subjects. The office . . . it becomes something much Like an oversized, Sometimes disorganized catch-all.

They say we are living in the Swinging Sixties, where nothing is done In moderation-we eat too much, We drink too much, we wear dresses too short, We let our hair grow too long, we drive too fast, We rise in our profession too easily. We have the habit, ingrained within us, Of trying to do too many things, of living too fast, And of ying too young. Our motto . . . Live now, quickly, for who knows What the morrow will bring. Even in our schools, this idea is reflected by Each individual. Waste not, want not-that is waste not one Single second, one hour. In school we learn the basic Rules for kee ing up with our hectic world. We start each, morning by racing to catch The bus, then continue through the day by Hurrying to classes, running to and fro, Back and forth, up and down the halls. A mad world, a hectic society, A constant battle to beat Old Man Time . . . Are we winning . . . or losing? 19
