As the clock begins its Descent from tvvelve to zero, and The first ball is kicked off, A multitude of thoughts race through the Minds of those concerned. To the eager and enthusiastic fan, Football season represents an Exciting and Wonderful time. Suspense and thrill, Joy and apprehension, Disappointment and breathless glee, Are visible in each movement, in the eyes, And in the cheers. We, as spectators, feel carefree and gay, Proud and hopeful- But What is going through the minds of the players? Each is remembering the long, hard road he traveled To be prepared for this, the iirst of many Big nights. He thinks of the Weekly drill sessions which Began in Iune, of the tiring exercises, Of the grueling week at camp. Each guard and quarterback, halfback and lineman, Is silently rehearsing the various plays So that when his chance comes, he Will not fail. He possesses a stamina and desire so intense He is not only Willing, but happy To remain after school each day until Darkness says it is time to go home. The first string players are crossing their fingers In the hope that they Wonit fumble or Cause the Spartans to lose. The second and third string players, The bench Warmersf' Are Whispering a prayer, not only for the Success of the Spartans, but that maybe, Iust maybe, they might get to play. Football is a great game, but it becomes Something even more when it is realized What all goes into the preseason Workout- The time that it takes to master Each maneuver, each play, each game. 10

Little is known of the back-stage excitement, The tenseness, nervousness, and Work which brought This solemn moment in a long-awaited assembly, A silent moment of thought for those who have Fought and died for our freedom. For a short while it all becomes real, and We appreciate our Hag and what it symbolizes. 12
