ARTHUR SNYDER Master of Education This busy personage who hails from California State Teachers College, was on a leave of absence from teaching this year to take on more duties as assistant Vocational Director. FACULTY VOCATIONAL INDUSTRIAL CURRICULUM purpose is to produce a competent worker and a citizen who is economically, socially, e- motionally and physically adjusted. Practical experiences provide students with saleable skills for entrance into a trade upon gradu- ation. lt is a three year program. One-half of each day is spent in trade training and the re- mainder in regular academic classroom work. An exchange program is in effect between Hempfield and Jeannette Senior High Schools in the field of vocational education. A limited number of training stations are reserved at Hempfield for Jeannette students and vice versa, Participating students spend one-half of each day at their home high school for the required academic classroom work and the balance of each day at the other school for trade work. INDUSTRIAL ARTS knowledge acquired in this course gives the students an opportunity to search and discover the field to which they are best suited. All of these courses are offered on an elective basis to students of the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. The subjects offered in the program are Mechanical Drawing, Metalwork, and Wood- working. COMMERCIAL HAS DFJ K I. . .this is the basic factor in the typing course which is one ot the important sublects stressed in the Com- mercial Department. Also offered in the commercial course is Bookkeeping l and ll, Business Exploratory, Business Mathematics, Consumer Education, Economic Geography, General Business, Sales, Shorthand l and II and Transcription. The most modern and up- to-date business machines are available to the students who are taking Office Practice and Machines. These machines supply the stu- dents with an excellent background and teach them the proper and efficient way to operate the business machines ot today. Textbooks, practice sets, bulletin board displays, and film- strips are some of the ways the subjects are taught. The Commercial Department enables the students to secure training which will pre- pare them for a further education or a iob in the business field. DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION better known as D. E., is a course available to members of the twelfth grade only, who are interested in a position in retail selling or any other distribu- tive occupation. Students enrolled in this course spend one-half of their time in class- room subiects which include: English, Econom- ics of Distribution, Store Arithmetic, Job Problems, and other related subiects. They then are employed by local stores in retail selling for the balance of each day.
