Mr. Benford was born in Flint, Michigan. He graduated from Flint Central High School in 1945. Mr. Benford continued his edu- cation at Central Michigan University earning a BA in 1951. He received his MA in 1956 from University of Michigan. Mr. Benford came to Hemlock and began work in the Hemlock School system in 1951. It is said his outstanding characteristics are patience and his sense of humor. He gives a lot to life and gets a lot from it. He resides at 360 Norbet Lane with his wife Betty and children Jim, Barb, and Mark. He also has another son, Mike, who is mar- ried. Mr. Benford, to you with honor and devotion, we dedicate this yearbook. 6 ACTIVITIES HOMECOMING MEMORIES '71 King Dean '70 King John '71 Enter the new king and queen. STUDENTS EXPERIENCE NEW CULTURES Pontus Lindburg is our only exchange student this year. He lives in Turku, Finland with his par- ents and older brother Rufus. Turku is the third largest city in Finland and as in many big cities, most of the people live in apartments. His hob- bies are sailing and snow skiing. Before he came to America he had never had jello, marshmal- lows, corn, or sweet potatoes. He would really like to get to see a bigger city. The Barr fam- ily, with whom he lives, is traveling to Florida over Easter so he may get his wish. L. to R.: Joanne Grubaugh stayed in Frederick-William- Lubke-Koog, Germany. It was a small farming village of about 200 people. It was beautiful country, and the people were beautiful too. Teresa Barr spent one month in Dovai, France and one month in Vigneiu, France. Her feelings are expressed J'aime La France! Janet Young had a jolly two months in Ochten, Netherlands. It was a great experience. Bi- cycling, going shopping in Amsterdam, and learning Dutch was a lot of fun. Jon Wardin spent his summer in a suburb of Stockholm, Sweden called Lidingo. It was really fun and interesting. Throughout our lives, we are constantly meeting people. As we go through grade school and then high school, we make many friends. The dictionary defines a friend as, One attached tfi another by esteem, respect and affection. At graduation we feel happy but also a little sad. We sense an ending of what has been and a beginning of new experiences in an adult world. We may never see some of our friends again. Others may be seen less and less often through the years. However, let's look toward the future. Wherever we go, whatever we do, we will meet new people and make new friends. As we become involved in other lives, we find ourselves needed and needing others. After all, that's what life is all about, isn’t it? 136
