Along about the year 1941 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor everyone thought that was a world- shaking event, and so it was, but not nearly so important to the Seniors of 1959 as the fact that most of them were born just before, during or just after that year. Yes, truly afine crop of baby boys and girls came into the world at that time. For six years these children played and were hap- py enjoying the privileges of childhood, carefully and lovingly protected by affectionate, proud par- ents. But finally the day came when like baby birds we-the present Seniors - were pushed out of the nest by the mama and papa birds and sent off in our prettiest new dresses and suits to meet ad- venture in the Hemingway School. Some of us were too shy, some too eager, and hardly any of us just right but we had finally set out on the 12 year voyage throughthe sea of books, class rooms and activities which we now call life, and our life together during these twelve years has become very dear to our hearts. In the beginning we were 56 strong but some- where alongthe way we lost some and gained some and now today we are graduating 21 girls and 13 boys. Of this number 17 started out together in the first grade. These were Sylvia Eaddy, Linda Has- elden, Cynthia Haselden, Larry Eaddy, Harry Huggins, Ginny Galloway, Patricia Cox, Dena Cribb, Dorothy Brewer, Charles Jowers, Betty Newell, Billy Hanna, Mary Douglas, Faye Hart, Jean Cox, Jimmy Wilder, and Edward Haselden. We were joined by Gwen Oliver and Tommy Snowden in the second grade, Lemont Rogers in the third, Katie Collins and Jimmy Prosser in the fifth grade, Nancy Altman, Peggy Pope, and Rhoda Ann Myers in the sixth grade, Harry Tanner, Albert Mae Woodberry, Victor Lawrimore, and Audrey Perry in the seventh grade, Betty Lou Johnson, Myrtle Lee Johnson and Rudolph Barn- hill in the eighth grade. This brings us to the end of grammar school. CLASS HISTORY Things hadbeen simple during these years. Our mothers could help us if we got stuck! Then we were glad and sorry too to be leaving grammar school and entering high. It was with sorrow that we left the familiar scenes behind and with fear and trembling that we entered the portals of high school. Still we were glad to be venturing into the unknown. We'll never forget those gruesome initiations into the different organizations of high school, neither shall we forget the pleasures we had on our class trips to Charleston in the seventh grade and to Columbia in the eighth. In our high school years weadded onlytwo new names to our class roll, Ethel Morris who joined us in the tenth grade and Carole Lee in the twelfth. As Freshmen we were really green horns, not knowing our way around. As Sophomores we became a little more intel- ligent through the guidance of some truly wonder- ful teachers. As Juniors we were in the know and in the swim. Our Jr. Sr. was a dream come true. The hours spent working on it andthe sleep lost over it were only stepping stones to some of our happiest mo- ments together. Then we became dignified seniors and along with our growing up won a few honors for oiu'selves. Our class has always excelled in sportsg making up a good per cent of the basketball, football, and baseball teams. Making the money for our trip to Washington and New York seemed impossible in the beginning but by cooperation of our parents, our class and our loyal sponsors, Mrs. Mildred Johnson and Mr. Dan Daniels, we made it. And so we come to the end of a perfect twelve years together. When we look back, we know that we have worked hard and well and that each life will be a little better for having been touched by the others. I Sylvia Eaddy
