Zhe We, the seniors of 1959, gladly dedicate our annual to a hard-working, dedicated, and well-liked teacher of our Hemingford High School, Mrs. Alberta Byrum. Because of her eagerness to help students in later life as well as school life, we believe she fully deserving of this honor. We feel that not only as a teacher in school but as a person in daily life that she sincerely en- deavors to help young people everywhere to lead better lives. MR. GLENN BOSLEY MRS. JOSEPHINE JOHNSON M. E., U. of Nebraska Chadron State Teachers College Superintendent Principal, English MR. RAY SCOTT, B. S. Chadron State Teachers College Agriculture and Shop MR. ROBERT WILLIAMS, B. M. E. Chadron State Teachers College Music We Keap the of Education We look towards the field of education with confidence in those who have gone before us to prepare a sound foundation--as the farmer looks forward to a field of golden wheat through his own preparation. Our wheat fields must undergo a lengthy series of preparation before a single tiny seed can be dropped into their furrows. The farmer is faced with a decision of choosing the variety of wheat best adapted to his locality. In our educational system we must fulfill the requirements of a series of preparatory grades before graduating on to the higher level of education - high school. Our teachers shoulder the responsibility of selecting the best possible curriculum, with respect to available facilities in order to turn out more intelligent individuals and more well-rounded citizens of the U. S. £et ’$ Begin to Ceam The beginning of school, kindergarten, is the time when the seed is planted to achieve a plentiful harvest toward reaching your senior year in school. When planting the seed there are many things to consider: Learning to play with others, as well as working together; to become more inde- pendent; learning to use scissors, paste, and crayons; listening to stories and poems, and learning many songs. Learning to read is the fertilization that cannot be neglected, because: Its relation to other school subjects: Its use in meeting simple demands of daily life for information: Its power to enrich lei- sure time and widen life contacts: Reading has cer- tain character building values, as: a. helping boys and girls to lead a fuller, richer life; b. giving them new experiences: c. stimulating them to do their own thinking; d. giving them a taste for the best things in life. We Ceam to Study The future years in school depend on the security of the roots. In the Second grade we develop a stable vocabulary, a real desire for learning and healthy atti- tudes toward STUDY. We Ceam the Qolden Rule In the first stages of the growing pro- cess we find the Third grade stressing citizenship, manners, character building and exercising the Golden Rule. We try to respect the opinions and rights of others and practice the simple social courtesies. In so doing we hope to be better boys and girls along with attaining our required aca- demic achievements. Zkiuk for Xfoursclf Still in the process of growing, the Fourth grade must make a definite advance- ment in the assuming of responsibility and development of independent thinking. As far as subject matter is concerned, new subjects are introduced and a firm founda- tion laid for future work in the subjects in the years to come. Jr actions Stumped Us As the wheat continues to grow we come to the Fifth grade. Here we learn to think and reason for ourselves. We learn to ask wholesome questions, and begin our work in fractions and learn to read all types of supplementary material. We also learn to be good citizens in all of our activities. Knee Deep in earning In the Sixth grade we decide to meas- ure our crop to see how much it has pro- gressed so far. Here we find that it has grown to be knee high in self-reliance, self-direc- tion, and good study habits. We also find the use of the dictionary, good spelling, and speed and accuracy in the basic number skills. Here we emphasize the work-type skill pro- gram which tends to provide techniques and insure successful study habits. The Junior High football team had a successful year in 1958. Here we are starting to prepare for our further education in High School. This is a big undertaking. Once we have searched out our special talents and interests, we find it profitable to band together with other individuals possessing like interest, to practice our grow- ing knowledge, and to make the fullest use of our abilities. What a struggle - ad- justing to a new schedule, rushing from class to class and slipping in the door just as the tardy bell clangs, entering into the many new activities, making new friends, idolizing the upperclass- men, and at the same time trying not to appear as a freshman. All in all, though, you had a good year. With your class the school board established a precedent in order to re- ceive a special merit diploma when you graduate. Our speech class had a pretty busy year, too. The first big project was the bimonth- ly radio program. The Bobcats Scratch.
