However, most cat owners had more than one while dog owners stuck to Just one canine. Out of the 13 students who didn't currently own pets, a little less than half of them had taken a pet to the Humane Society and 10 out of the 13 thought about adopting one from there. The survey also show- ed that Hellgate student like to keep their students healtily. 28 Community Looking For fl Home Behind Bars- R kitten wonders whether he'll be adopted from the Humane Society. he Missoula County Humane Society has been sheltering animals in Missoula for the last 24 years. Though the first organization was formed in 1919. There were no bylaws and the animals didn't have very sanitary or satisfactory shelters. It wasn't until 1963 that a group of people became concern- ed about the care of the animals and set out to build a new shelter that set the standards for today. There are 108 pets born every minute In the United States. €very three days there are more pets born than there are people in Mon- tana and every eight hours there are enough pets born to out- number the people in Missoula County. If those figures sound alar- ming imagine being the person who has to put to sleep the thousands of unwanted pets. To the nine women employees at the Humane Society in Missoula, the death of animals is a reality. It is not the irresponsible people who let their pets run wild without being neutered or spayed that have to see healthy animals be sacrificed because of the lack of adequate space. R regular day at the Humane Society starts out with two people working for 2-3 hours cleaning and sterilizing the cat cages, plus feeding and exercising the animals. Then another two people comein for 3-4 hours to do the same to the dog kennels. Needed medication is given, floors are scrubbed, and finally at 11:00, they open knowing that between 80 and 100 animals could be brought in during the week. They also face the good news up to 57 of those animals might be adopted into good homes. The price for adopting an animal is $20 for a puppy or an adult dog that has not been spayed or neutered. R $10 deposit Is added to get the dog fixed which Includes temporary vaccination and a visit to the vet. Cats are $10 plus a $10 deposit also. R fixed adult cat is $15 which Includes the vaccination and vet examination plus a cat carrier. The shelter can hold 21-30 cats, 37 dogs and enough puppies to fill seven pens. But still that Isn't enough to save half the animals In the Missoula shelter that are put to sleep each y.eor. In 1986, 3,513 dogs and cats were brought in and 1,936 of them had to be put to sleep because of poor health or lack of space. For the nine employees, It is something they have to face every day. We take the good with the bad. Cveryone is really involved with it...It's not just a job. said Jan Miller, Humane Society employee. Although he added that the grading is harsher in America because of percentages. The tests in Germany ore much more intense than in America. They hove around eight huge exams per subject and they ore never multiple choice. After Smolko graduates, he soid he'd enjoy going to o college in America but he hasn’t decided which one yet. She is an only child and lives with her parents who own a sporting goods store. Mueller spent her senior year here at Hellgate. U.S. History and Algebra II were the hardest sujects she had, especially the story pro- blems in Algebra II. Mueller enjoys skiing, music, animals, playing squash and going out with friends. She liked the trees and mountains Brienuga’s. Nielsen came to the United States because he wanted to improve his Fnglish” and his father felt he was too young to go on to the col- lege level. UUhen he returns he will resume his schooling. He felt that schooling in Denmark is around Missoula and found the people very nice. One thing that bothered her however, is that everything is located so far away and you always need a car to go anyplace. €vo Bourns Eva Baums is an ex- change student from UUest Berlin and was a junior at Hellgate this year. Here, the relationship between teachers and pupils is better, com- mented Baums who liked more difficult, but Hellgate is much bigger and has lockers, he said. Judith Kuehne JJudith Kuehne was | an exchange stu orm Lirbeck, Schler- wig Holstein, UUest Ger- many. She stayed with the Frank and Jenny UUalker family, which she very much enjoyed. I love my family here, she stated. West Germany Hellgate and her classes but said it is harder for me here because of the language, but I think the classes in Germany are a little harder. School ends at 1:30 in Germany so teens have a lot more free time during West Germany One thing, however, that bothered Kuehne is the overstated sense of nationalism or patriotism that she felt, everybody seems to think that America is the greatest. She was impressed with Missoula, but also likes many other countries that Hellgate students tend to put down. Some of Kuehne’s favorite things about Missoula were the moun- tains and the trees, the people are very friendly. Although you can't say whether you like it or not, there are some things you don't...you could say it is a different world, she explained. the week. Baums felt that there is an extreme sense of overpowering patriotism that she didn't like. She hoped to get into Drama during her year at Hellgate, and maybe learn to ski in the winter. UUith this new ond expensive goal in mind, come many new pro- blems. Getting enough money to poy the bills was one of the top dif- ficulties. This involved endless hours of selling advertising ond the year- books themselves. R campaign was set up involving posters and stickers to promote the selling of the books. Class competition was another method used to try ond stimulate interest. Advertising, however, wasn't the only time consuming project, late nights ond long afternoons were spent with poste-up of the pages, writing copy and finding ideas to moke the yearbook more unique. Wayne Seitz Getting The Scoop With the return of Wayne Seitz from o year's sabbatical leave, the Lance underwent many changes. Unlike last year's newspapers, the 1987-88 Lances came out bi- weekly, putting more pressure on the staff of 20. To help the paper look more professional and ease the pressure of getting enough stories to fill the paper, the Lance cut three inches off the size of the paper. With this reduction, it was easier to get out many issues without unused space. But size reduction, more issues and Seitz's return were not the only changes. Coach Bob Holden hoped to stren- then the team and develop a bet- ter sense of togetherness. Frosh Soph Soy's Basketball 145 Unstoppable Poor scheduling in pre-seoson placed the Knights ot o disadvantage early in the season. Coach €rlc Hays was strongly against playing class A teams who weren't in the same division as the Knights. The athletic directors made the schedule to cut traveling ex- penses. The Knights, playing only eleven class AA teams had con- siderably less experience playing upper level teams like cross-town rivals Big Sky and Sentinel. Although there was much dislike about the new schedule, the Knights will probably have the same schedule next year. The Knights rolled to a 8-0 start, playing only four games against AA teams. Having a lack of height, Hellgate used their quickness to create a fast paced game which enabled them to force turnovers. The Knights lost only two players from last year's team. They also hod o new coach, Rueben Martinez who wanted to bring a strong wrestling program back to Hellgote. During the rebuilding stage, Martinez depended on in- dividual efforts to overcome the team's inexperience. UUlth more flexibility, he hoped the wrestlers would push themselves to become successful. His goal for the season was to get more students interested. Since none of the lower schools have wrestling programs, Martinez hoped to Interest students by visiting the grade schools and en- couraging them to Join wrestling when they get to Hellgote. He only entered nine wrestlers in the annual Rocky Mountain Classic and luckily found three of them plac- ing. The lack of talent drove Hellgote to be tied for 10th place out of 13 teams. Success just doesn't come in winning, but in just trying our best. stressed Martinez. UUhich One?- Junior Nathan Sigars plans his move on his opponant at the Rocky Mountain Classic.
