HALBERD VOLUME 16, 1981 HELLGATE HIGH SCHOOL MISSOULA, MONTANA • CONTENTS STUDENT LIFE 8 FACULTY SPORTS HONORS ACTIVITIES 81 CLASSES Go placidly amid the noise haste, remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly clearly; and listen to others, even the dull ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain bitter; for always there will be greater lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. Found in old Saint Paul's Church, Baltimore; dated 1692 Editors Shawn Ryan Margo Buckles When Missoula voters passed a bond issue to build a third high school, a bond was also passed for construction of a new annex at Hellgate. The annex was completed by the onset of the new year. This building includes a library, gymnasium and shop and science facilities. Homecoming 80 Color, spirit and blasting brass bands created a merry celebration as Hellgate and Sentinel combined troops in joint Homecoming festivi- ties. Hellgate seniors nominated Neil Blakely and Nadine Thompson as Homecoming King and Queen. Runners-up were Karen Bianchi, Shelly Clay, Kip Kimerly, Brad Larson, Fran- cie Marcinkowski and Mike Ramos. This year all three high schools, Hellgate, Sentinel and Big Sky combined their bands to perform in the Homecoming Parade. This band and drill team also performed in Dallas, Texas for the Cotton Bowl Parade, New Year’s day. Students Dash To Lunch Although most of the day the cafe- teria is a quiet study hall, the mo- ment the twelve o’clock bell rings, it is transformed into what seems a world of total anarchy and confu- sion. Students form two lines, one circling the cafeteria, the other ex- tending into the hall, and settle in for a surprisingly short wait for lunch. With the new six period day, all of Hellgate’s students have lunch be- tween twelve and one o'clock. This is the only time during the day that they are free to wander or leave the campus. While many students chose to eat elsewhere, the cafete- ria is always thronging with those who have chosen to make use of it’s facilities. The new system is not flawless and seems a bit chaotic most of the time, but Hellgate stu- dents are being fed, and manage to survive. The new boundaries and the new school have been the cause of the influx of people from Sentinel to Hellgate and from Sentinel and Hellgate to Big Sky. Old friendships are being split up and new friendships are being formed. Slowly, people are be- ginning to cope without the nine period day and free periods scattered pleasantly throughout. The hall pass system, however, was not so well received. This is of no consequence however, compared to the importance of knowing people with whom one shares a likeness of mental atti- tudes. Clearly, friends old and new, are important to ones en- joyment of life in general. Old Friends Here are the people who run this school—part of this year without facilities and space. While they watied to move into the new building, some conducted classes in the auditorium and the hallways. Overcrowded and shorthanded, they still designed curriculum, innovated new ideas, discussed life and how it works, corrected tests, ordered supplies, listened to problems and excuses and encouraged the student to try again. The lable “Sports People” covers a diverse group of individuals. But all of these people share some basic experiences and feelings. The athletes and coaches put in countless hours of preparation and physical training. They work regardless of weather, be it sunshine or freezing rain. They practice and play despite painful injuries, and keep their morale and spirit going long before and after the student body adopts this spirit and gives it’s support. The “Sports People” dedicate much time and effort to their events, and deserve praise and recognition for their representation of Hellgate High School. Early in the season the Hellgate Knights could easily have claimed to be one of the most traveled teams in the country on the road to Billings and Bozeman. The Knight’s future looked dim after losing both these non-conference games. After returning home, the Knights were reignited and proceded to sweep the football teams of Libby, Havre, and Anaconda aside. The Knights then met crosstown ri- val Big Sky at Rollins Field. The underdog Eagles led Hellgate 3-0 from the moment a 30-yard field goal was made in the last two minutes of the first half, until the last play of the third period. The leading Eagles, who were fac- ing a fourth down on their own 27, lined up to punt. But before the Eagles could get the kick clear. Brad Larson broke through and blocked it. Mike Martin scooped the ball up and ran the 14 yards to the goal line. Big Sky rallied and drove 70 yards to put the Eagles ahead 9-6 with 5 minutes 55 seconds of time remain- ing. But a lot can happen in 6 minutes and Hellgate quarterback Dan Ta- bish proved that. Tabish hit Mike Callahgan from the Knights 39 yard line. Callaghan drove 47 yards to Big Sky's 14, which was the best run of the night. Four plays later Mike Ramos carried the ball over the goal line to make the score 13- 9, Hellgate. The Eagles retailiated by driving to the Knight’s 23; but their hopes were shattered when Mike Martin slapped a hand on a Big Sky pass which completed the victory for Hellgate, with 35 seconds remain- ing. The next game Hellgate suffered a crushing defeat from the Flathead Braves. Demoralized, the Knights battled the Spartans, but the result was from the mold of eight previous seasons. Hellgate ended the sea- son with a 4-3 record. 40 Knights Vs. This year Hellgate faced Sentinel as its Homecoming rival. Hellgate’s team controlled the game through the first half; however, in the third quarter Sentinel pulled ahead and Hellgate was unable to gain the lead again. The Knights experienced a twofold loss, not only losing their Homecoming game, but also a position in the divisional tournament. Sophomores then moved up into the Junior Varsity squad and formed the bulk of the team; there were only six Ju- niors on the team. The team split the season 4-4. 42 Far Right- Coaches Gary Gernant and Byron Anderson took sides on whether the team had won 50% of their games or lost 50%. Below- Brian Barry ran the ball well against the Spartans. Frosh Break Records The Hellgate Freshmen had a spectacular year, breaking many standing Western AA conference records for fresh- men. Perry Sample and Terry Thomas broke the record for most fumble recoveries in a game with two apiece. The team surpassed the record for most points scored in a game, racking up 39 points against the Spartan Frosh. The first year Hellgate team also broke a record for the most games won: 6 wins, 1 loss (against Frenchtown). NEAR LEFT- It takes two Loyola players to bring the ballcarrier. Pat Foley, down. Girl's B-Ball Despite the lack of experience, the Knights played well this season. The team, consisting of three seniors and the rest juniors, showed a lot of spirit and worked hard. As a result, every game was better than the previous. The leadership was exceptional this year, thanks to the first rate seniors. They were very strong aggressively, they passed well, and worked very hard on defense. The team showed some of its hard work by ending the season with a 13-3 record. The sophomore team also did well. Despite their record of 2-10. the team was enthusiastic and hard working. By the end of the season, they improved quite a bit, not only on defense, but on working as a team. 46 Running Is Our Business Hellgate’s Boy's and Girl’s Cross Country teams participated in an all city meet against Big Sky and Sen- tinel, in which they placed second. Joan Woodbury deserves special praise for placing first in her division and being named most valuable runner. She is easily one of the top runners in the state. Top: Bill Kelly. Matt Rothermel. The team had strong ends and were quick on defense, but lost the game with Sentinel because of a illegal touch- down called for Sentinel. 50 Knights Add More Power Freshman Cody Bryant, underneath, fought defending state champion John Neiss when Hellgate met Ronan on December fifth. Bryant kept Neiss in hand for the first two periods but could not completely control the Ronan senior, losing the match 5-1. Adding to the strong Hellgate wrestling team is junior Matt Campbell, right, defending state champion for the second season. Here Matt closes the gap in his match against Brent Rolley of Ronan. Campbell is a transfer student from Havre and is living with coach Lanny Bryant because of his interest in freestyle wrestling. ■ Varsity Wrestling VARSITY WRESTLING-Standing: Coach Lanny Bryant, Dale Foster, Al Lewis, Todd Fisher. For two days in January the Hellgate gym was filled with groans and cheers as Hellgate played host to the Rocky Mountain Classic Wrestling Tournament. The Classic was attended by sixteen teams from Montana and Idaho and began Friday, January 16th. Hellgate produced two champion wrestlers in their weight class, but was unable to accumulate enough team points to place higher than fourth overall. 138-pound Dale Foster and 119-pound Matt Campbell finished undefeated in their respective weight classes. Hellgate had gained 119 points after eight rounds of competi- tion leaving the Knights in fifth place at the start of the final rounds. This loss moved the Knights again to second. The next night Hellgate hosted and beat the Libby Loggers. With the creation of Big Sky the Western AA division was juggled between the three Mis- suola teams, such that each game played could wrest first place from almost any team. Unexpectedly in mid January Big Sky held first after beating both Hellgate and Sentinel but was unable to retain that title after falling into a slump, and was replaced by the Spar- tans. The Spartans held the first place position, but the Knights trailed Sentinel by only Vi game and then tied for the first with Sentinel after a win over Columbia Falls. The standings were once again juggled on February 19, when Hellgate hosted Big Sky and lost 56-57 be- The first half of the season entailed no major injuries until Ralph Ashmore contracted pneumonia on the day before the first Hellga- te Sentinel game and missed three ball games returning for the second Hellgate Big Sky game on February 19. All seemed well for the Knights, Ashmore was recovering quickly, until Dan Tabish stepped on another players foot during practice and tore ligaments in his ankle and chipped a bone. Tabish underwent Surgery on February 26 and remained out for the rest of the sea- son. All in all the team was very strong and worked excellently together. In the first half of the year Senior Reggie Hall played on the JV team but was then moved to a varsity position, Hall is a transfer student from New Orleans and is living with Coach Demmons. On Friday March 6th the Hellgate Knights played the Big Sky Eagles in their second game of the Western A A Basketball Tournament at the Harry Adams Field House. The Knights, trying to break the jinx of the Eagles, having lost to them twice earlier in the regular season, played a very hard and intense game. One of the most admirable performances was given by senior Gary Steubs. who suffered from leg cramps in the vital fourth quarter, but continued to play. The team’s hard work was rewarded with a 49-46 win. Saturday, the 7th. the Knights met the Sentinel Spartans to determine the divisional champion. Helgate was crippled by their lack of power at the backboard because of missing guard. Dan Tabish. and lost 65-44. The State A A Tournament was won March 21 by Billings West. Into New Gym When the old annex was torn down, (in the 1979-1980 school year) to make room for the new addition, Hell- gate Gymnasts were without an area to practice. This year the Knights came up with winning teams under the direction of Vicki Brown, Greg Farnum and Cadi Kirby, incor- porating the high skill level and interest of the players to the best advantage. The teams had an abundance of strong hitters, said Head Coach Vicki Brown, “These girls want to win and like to win.” Interest was apparent by the num- ber of girls that went out for the Hellgate volleyball teams, over thir- ty prospective players showed up after school for practice in early January. In fact so many good players came out, said Coach Brown, “It was hard to decide who would go JV and who would be on the Frosh team.” FROSH-Front Row: Deanna Papke. Coach Candi Kirby. Diana Hiller. This section honors those students who are outstanding in academics, music and diplomacy. Their recognition comes in various forms. The musicians, representing band, choir and orchestra, participate in state and regional festivals. The scholarships range from commendation to gifts of money. And the diplomats attend state conferences. But all, in their areas of excellence, have received awards given to only a fraction of the students who compete for them. Many hours go into developing talents to this degree, and the achievements of these people are evidence of their dedication. During the first two weeks of June, Montana’s top male and female delegates gathered for their respective sessions of Boys’ and Girls’ State. The stu- dents learn the basic procedures of congress, pass bills and elect state officers. Students apply for Boys' and Girls’ State during their junior year. Semifinalists are chosen by their teachers and the final delegates are chosen by their classmates. Francie Marcincowski was elect- ed at Girls' State as a delegate for Girls’ Nation. In this section, the Halberd pays tribute to all of the students who spend extra time to make school life more colorful. Here are the actors, dancers and musicians who construct 4 plays a year. Here are the photographers and writers who put together our newspaper, yearbook and literary magazine. Here are the musicians who give us concerts, and clubs which involve the student body in politics, sports and foreign affairs. These many hours of time pay off in lifetime interests and lasting friendships. Despite a relatively inexperienced staff and a new advisor, the 1981 Halberd was published without any major problems. With the loss of 600 students to Big Sky and Sentinel, the yearbook is 40 pages smaller than last year’s. The obvious theme for this year’s book was the construction of the new annex - which the photography staff was able to record month by month and incorporate into each section. Mrs. Autio, advisor, and the staff felt that the 1981 book will be unique for fhis historical information. Front Row: Jennifer Rudio. Amy Van Schoick. Shoni Card. Faculty Editor. Shawn Ryan. This is a band comprised of select band and drill team members from each of the three high schools. Almost a year ago this band was invit- ed to perform in the Cotton Bowl Parade in Dallas, Texas. Each member of the group was expected to raise $380 by selling citrus fruit, cheese, sausage, and magazines as well as their own labor. B.O. B.B.B. is short for Back Our Bowl Bound Band, which is what most of the Missoula businesses did. Through an unfortunate mishap in cueing, the band marched past the T.V. cameras during a commercial. This resulted in not being seen on national T.V. Al- though this was a disappointment to the group, the rest of the trip was a great success. The group stayed in Dallas, Houston, and swam in Galveston Bay. A Planatarium, Sea World. The Astrodome, The Dallas Zoo, and Nasa were among the places they saw. 1. The Pep Band practices during the lunch hour and before games. At most games, the Pep Band is the noisiest, rowdiest group of people in the crowd. The Pep Band also plays for the Valkyries when they per- form. The Pep Band is appreciated by the teams and the cheerleaders, as well as the crowd. Her son Tom can’t stand his mother’s nagging and seeks escape in alcohol and the unrealistic world of movies. Laura, the daughter, is crippled, and this defect, intensified by her mother’s anxiety to see her married, has driven her more and more into herself. The crux of the action comes when Tom invites a friend to dine with the family. Jim, the friend, is a nice ordinary man who is at once pounced upon by the mother as a possible husband for Laura. In spite of her crude efforts to entrap the young man, he and Laura get along nicely, and momentarily Laura is lifted out of herself and into a new world. Mrs. Savage has been thrown into a mental institution by her step-children. However. Mrs. Savage has the entire family fortune hidden, meaning that her step children can't live off of her wealth. Eventually. Mrs. Savage gets to keep her money and is released from the institution, but only after she has become close to all of the patients and made quite a discovery: in some ways, the outside world is much more insane than inside the mental institution. “The Curious Sav- age.” the first play of the year, showed in the Hellgate auditorium Dec. 11-13. Hellgate classes this year totaled 1250. The school day was longer for most students; six full periods required students to stay until 3:00. For half the year everyone was in over- crowded rooms waiting for the construction to be completed. Woods and metal classes met in the auditorium all semester and studyhalls were in the cafeteria. Art classes overflowed into the hallways. Gradually, students moved into the locker room of the new building - then shop and science rooms - which gave everyone much needed breathing space. It is manditory for the Hmongs to take the same required classes as any other Hellgate student by Montana law. To compensate for their lack of fluency, they took special classes at Central School with the ESL program (English as a Second Language) which was de- signed to teach the English language to people with different cultural backgrounds. Many speak, Hmong, Lao, Thai, French, and English, Missoula had about sixty-nine Hmongs attending the three high schools. Nineteen at Hellgate, about thirty-eight at Sentinal, and about twelve out at Big Sky. FRONT ROW: Yang Thao. Phai Lov, Nhia Yang, Yer Thao, Pang Chang, Pang Yang, Mee Thao.
