The ceremony begins with the new members carrying a candle repre- senting knowledge. The ceremony is concluded with the new members reciting a pledge and re- ceiving a membership card. Students are tapped by the advisors of one of the three high school publications-the Lance, the Halberd, or the Troubadour. Nominees must also be in the top third of their class academically. The pur- pose of Quill and Scroll is to encourage stu- dents to pursue journalism as a possible career and to strive for quality in their high school journalistic endeavors. RASMUSSEN ELECTED SECRETARY OF STATE Carroll College was the sight of Montana Girls State from June third to the eighth. The girls were taught the duties, privileges, and rights of American citizenship and also practiced the mechan- ics of government. Eight girls were selected by the faculty on the qualities of character, leadership, hon- esty. and scholarship. The Junior girls elected four del- egates and four alternates. MAGONE 1ST RUNNER UP FOR GOVERNOR Western Montana College hosted Boys State from June eleventh to the seventeenth. Montana Boys State is a workshop in state and local gov- ernment and is planned so that the students put into practice the theories they have been taught in their government courses. The delegates are assigned to cities which form the state that is run using Montana law as a guide. The six delegates and six alternates are chosen on leadership, char- acter, and scholarship.
