BRAZILIAN SPENDS YEAR AT HELLGATE “My experience here has been fantastic. Everything is different and much profitable. The A.F.S. exper- ience is giving me a great year and I am so happy to be here in Missoula. Montana. I like everything about Missoula and the people have been so nice with me. My host family, the Booths, is a wonderful one. They have a uncommensurable human warmth and have fulfilled my life here with much love. I love them very much. I shall say ‘thanks so much’ for them, and I really hope that ‘thanks so much’ can mean, in Eng- lish. how thankful I am. Thanks so much to my fam- ily in Brazil, who wanted to see me here very much and is. surely, very happy that everything here has been wonderful for me. Thanks also to the teachers, who helped me a lot in this beginning which is a little hard, and thanks to all the people here, who have been really nice with me. I love here. This year has been so great for me. folks, and I’m sure it will be always recalled, of a special way. NYQUIST VISITS FINLAND BRENT NYQUIST Everything here is great! Everyday I meet new people at school so that every moment is exciting and new. There are three grades in our school, which is called a Gymnasium-meaning it’s a College Prep. Highschool. I am taking classes in all three levels, plus some classes with comprehen- sive school classes. I can manage in every class but Geography, Biology and Finnish where everything is in Finnish. Even if I was able to under- stand Finnish it would still be hard because they speak so fast. But. my Finnish vocabulary is increasing every day. My schedule is on a repeating two week basis with classes being forty five minutes long with a fifteen minute break in between. I will be taking a Finnish for Foreigners class at the Turiku University with other Turiku AFS’ers. We will have class twice a week and hopefully learn some Finnish. We eat roughly four times a day. Breakfast is hot cereal and little sand- wiches and lunch is served at school in the classrooms. We eat again after school and dinner is at six o’clock. With almost every meal we eat something that has been grown by the family. One thing I have really noticed is the little meat they eat. It is always a side dish or added for taste. Bread is hard and flat and served with every meal. Finland is like England. There are no virgin forests. Everywhere you go there are signs of man. The forests are carefully managed but all have been cut at one time or another. The thing I find most fascinating, though, is the sea. I was so conditioned to a sea being a large body of water with waves, surf, and tide that to find the sea like a lake was quite a shock. There are no beaches, but only a forest and then water.
