PHOTO BY HAUGEN’S HALBERD VOLUME 14, 1979 HELLGATE HIGH SCHOOL MISSOULA, MONTANA 59801 Most people remember their high school days in detail. The changes and experiences that occur make that short time seem hard to forget, but somehow even the best memories grow dim. This is what a yearbook tries to prevent. One of the biggest reasons so many are reluctant to graduate is the enforced separation from friends and the loss of their four year home away from home. Friends go away to college, find work, marry or move away. A re- '•'on may happen in ten years or so. or never. One day in their old and gray years the question may arise. “I won- der if whats-her-face was ever in Pep Club” or if whats-his face made vice-president of General Motors. The year- book can be referred to. to see what he used to look like now that he is balding, perhaps has a white beard and maybe a double chin. The staff hopes that the Halberd has provided a smatter- ing of memories that can be looked back on in the years ahead. Eileen Hammill Editor Editor's Page 5 ■ is Leading wherever I choose. Cars are often backed up, schools are overcrowded and there are no decent parking places to be found. Good things also came with the growth, the Southgate Mall was one example. As the Mall opened, many students flocked there for various reasons. Some went to find jobs, some went to eat and shop and others just went for some good clean fun. The Mall has truely been a highlight for the 1978-1979 year and will probably continue to hold a prominent place in the future of Missoula. Southgate 21 Fair 22 August 23 - 27, the week of the Western Montana Fair was a very busy week for most Hellgaters. Concessions attracted many stu- dents to work for their extracuri- cular activity's booth. The horse- races were a good way to win money, but the best bet would have been to enter something in the fair. Inland Empire shows pro- vided the 23 rides for the Carni- val. Everything is different and much profitable. The A.F.S. exper- ience is giving me a great year and I am so happy to be here in Missoula. Montana. I like everything about Missoula and the people have been so nice with me. My host family, the Booths, is a wonderful one. They have a uncommensurable human warmth and have fulfilled my life here with much love. I love them very much. I shall say ‘thanks so much’ for them, and I really hope that ‘thanks so much’ can mean, in Eng- lish. how thankful I am. Thanks so much to my fam- ily in Brazil, who wanted to see me here very much and is. surely, very happy that everything here has been wonderful for me. Thanks also to the teachers, who helped me a lot in this beginning which is a little hard, and thanks to all the people here, who have been really nice with me. I love here. This year has been so great for me. folks, and I’m sure it will be always recalled, of a special way. The time goes fast and just thinking about going back has me sad because I feel that I am really going to miss everybody here.” “Eu estarei sempre lembrando de tudo aqui de uma maneira muito especial. Exchange Students 26 NYQUIST VISITS FINLAND BRENT NYQUIST Everything here is great! Everyday I meet new people at school so that every moment is exciting and new. There are three grades in our school, which is called a Gymnasium-meaning it’s a College Prep. Highschool. I am taking classes in all three levels, plus some classes with comprehen- sive school classes. I can manage in every class but Geography, Biology and Finnish where everything is in Finnish. Even if I was able to under- stand Finnish it would still be hard because they speak so fast. But. my Finnish vocabulary is increasing every day. My schedule is on a repeating two week basis with classes being forty five minutes long with a fifteen minute break in between. I will be taking a Finnish for Foreigners class at the Turiku University with other Turiku AFS’ers. We will have class twice a week and hopefully learn some Finnish. We eat roughly four times a day. Breakfast is hot cereal and little sand- wiches and lunch is served at school in the classrooms. We eat again after school and dinner is at six o’clock. With almost every meal we eat something that has been grown by the family. One thing I have really noticed is the little meat they eat. It is always a side dish or added for taste. Bread is hard and flat and served with every meal. Finland is like England. There are no virgin forests. Everywhere you go there are signs of man. The forests are carefully managed but all have been cut at one time or another. The thing I find most fascinating, though, is the sea. I was so conditioned to a sea being a large body of water with waves, surf, and tide that to find the sea like a lake was quite a shock. There are no beaches, but only a forest and then water. Freshmen Doug Wooley and sophomore Russ Schmelebeck were ruled ineligible due to weight violations. After some weJI- played season openers, the Knights fell by the wayside. Several times the Knights lost games by one or two points. Perhaps the most heartbreaking ex- ample was the first Hellgate-Sentinel game. Hellgate was narrowly defeat- ed in overtime by a score of 58-59. The final basket was made by Senti- nel’s Brian Morris with only seconds left. They came back, however, and upset CMR by one point the next weekend. Coach Eric Hayes incorpo- rated the J.V. and Varsity teams into one unit. The “Runnin' Rebels.” as the team was fondly referred to, were eliminated at divisionals and did not attend the state meet. This year was basical- ly a rebuilding year for the Knights after losing six seniors from last year’s divisional championship team. The team was pla- gued by lack of height and untimely injuries as well. None of these handicaps held the girls back from third place at divi- sional and going to State where they met Billings West in the opening round. The Knights were eliminated in the Saturday morning game by Sentinel. GIRL’S VARSITY BASKETBALL-Left Row Bottom to Top: Sue Habbe. Lynda Lassise. Roxanne Lindquist, Lisa Wanke. Debbie Sager. The scene was reminiscent of the Powderpuff game in 1966 when Hellgate also beat Sentinel 6-0. In the 14 game series this year’s win marks the 9th victory for the Hellgate team. Jo Olsen, junior, scored the only points in the 4th quarter with 3:20 left on the clock by intercepting a pass on the 3 yard line and running it in. Coach Ron Jones had two defensive units and two offensive units on the field that “hopeful- ly got to play an equal amount of time. The defensive unit played one squad with a five person line and the other squad played a three person line and four linebackers. The offense played out of a shotgun formation. The Hellgate team practiced for 11 sessions after school as compared to Sentinel's four week morning and night sessions of practice. Hellgate and Sentinel also recruit players in a different manner. Sentinel only played juniors and seniors whereas Hellgate played girls from all four classes. The theory behind this practice is that they will acquire more experience said Jones. But many reasons were behind the fact that Hellgate was ranked the lowest in the double “A” team polls. It was a classic “re-building year for the team because of a new coach. Larry Stranahan, who led Havre to second place behind Butte in 1977, became the driving force behind the Knights. Stranahan had to adjust to a different school and team. The team had to adjust to new rules and a differ- ent program. Despite the problems, the Knights were able to shut out Helena High 30 to 0. The Knights also displayed a strong defense throughout the year and the underclassmen saw varsity action, giv- ing them needed experience for next year. Coaches-Tom Willis. Jerry O'Rielly. The girls’ gymnastics team decided this year to strive for a better season. They set their goal as State Champs. They showed their skills in divi- sional where they finished 1st. Gymnastics 108 Boy’s gymnastics showed Knight fans one of the most inspired seasons yet. With the help of coaches Robin Hamilton and Kyle Boyce the boys grew into one of the bet- ter teams produced by Hellgate. The boys not only performed well as individuals but were together in their efforts for the team. They put much time and effort into practice for each performance and their skill showed. The boys also placed 1st at divisionals. Next year the team will be strong with returning underclassmen. VARSITY BOY’S GYMNASTICS TEAM-Front Row: George Kimerly. Dave Bumbeck. Brad Giffin. Senior Lee Allen, ninth in the state, helped the team to a record of 5-2 overall in dual meets. Although the team is young with only one senior, determination made up for any loss of experience. However, an advantage for the team is that next year the team will be stronger with returning varsity runners. The future looks bright for the girls cross- country team and Hellgate can look forword to a winning 1979 season. Senior Lee Allen Girl’s Cross Country 112 Sixth in the state was not what the Boy’s Cross Country team expected, but it had to do. Sen- ior Jamie McKenzie was the only Hellgate runner to place in the top 15. McKenzie took sec- ond with a time of 16:05.
