In addition, I was given a shower, kidnapped, dodged hundreds of wads of paper while serving as master of cere- monies for the talent show. Don Weidenfellcr Boss State 35 American Field Service Benny Kornum It has been a fantastic experience to come here from Copenhagen, Denmark. I want to give a special thanks to AFS, my family (both here and in Denmark), to Hellgate, and others who have brought my dream to reality. I also want to thank the teachers and students who have helped me to feel at home here. I really feel at home at the Pfister's (my family) and I want to thank them for what they have done for me. People here are almost the same as people in Denmark. But, the school system here is very different from the school system 1 was used to in Denmark. My biggest problem at this time, is that 1 have so much homework that 1 don't have much time to do any- thing else. But, still I am enjoying my stay. I took this trip because I wanted to try something new and to try to find out why Americans are as they are. I recommend it to anyone else who wants to learn more about the world. DE BEDSTE HILSNER, Benny Angelo Kornum 36 American Field Service Linda Parker, senior, was an American Field Service domestic exchange student to Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Linda lived with John and Lily Lee and their daughter Lydia from September to January. The Lee family is Chinese, and although very much Americanized, treated Linda to a few old country delicacies such as bird’s nest soup and seaweed soup which Linda said “tasted like aquarium water that fish had been swimming around in.” Family activities included swimming or playing tennis on the family court, attending the World Series games in Los Angeles, a vacation in Palm Springs and Christmas vacation in Acapulco. Linda attended Rolling Hills High School and took classes ranging from dance choreography to gourmet cooking. Linda said being a domestic exchange student was a wonderful experience and highly recommended it to anyone. Linda Parker “AFS has made it possible for me to experience a great new environment. I have noticed many differences and at the same time many similari- ties between Missoula and my home community. I have especially enjoyed the beautiful scenery here. 1 really appreciate the help and kindness that I’ve received from all the people here at Hcllgate. You have made my stay here very rewarding and have given me a feeling of accept- ance. I feel as if Fm a part of my family (the Albini's) and of Missoula. I am glad that this opportunity to exchange communities was avail- able to me.” Donny Brady from Fillmore, California Don Brady American Field Serv All-State Music Festival ALL-STATE MUSIC FESTIVAL-Selccted band, choir and orchestra students from all over the state were brought together in Billings to form the All-State Music Festival. Row 2: Coach Eric Hays, Greg Miller, Mark Merila, Greg Frame, Jerry Huggins, Tim Ryan, Bryan Adams, Mike Huguet. This year’s basketball team started the year off slow but grew with more experience. “Three problems were the cause of the slow start,” said Coach Hays, “lack of height, lack of varsity game experience and a new coach with a different style of play.” The lack of height couldn’t be changed but was dealt with by developing better basketball skills. Having only two players that saw varsity action last year hurt the team during the first half of the season. But the team's perfor- mance improved as the season progressed. Coach Hays commented on the third problem, “Starting the season with a new coach is a learning experience for all.” Hays had both new offensive and defensive plays plays that the team had to cope with. The team dealt with these problems very well with a 3-3 conference record and a 6-7 overall by the end of January. With the continuing improvement, the Knights should make an appearance in their tenth State Tournament. Students who are selected for this choir must have worked for two years in other choirs and are required to audition for conductor Neil Dahlstrom. Although the choir performs music ranging from pop, jazz and blues, their repertoire also includes traditional works such as portions of Handel's Messiah. Chamber Choir performed in various concerts throughout the year. They traveled to Great Falls for the AA Choral Festival where they worked for two days under the direction of Dr. Eph Ehly, one of America’s most sought-after conductors. The two day rehearsal culminated in a mass concert with the five other attending schools. Many vocalists from the choir sung in the December 18 production of Amahl and the Night Visitors and the choir participated in the Christmas assembly. Chamber Choir financed their trips with the money they raised from selling magazines and fruit. The cooperation within the choir and the resulting creation, their music, are the two elements that make this choir a close one. Chamber Choir-Front Row: Carrie Netzer, Kelly Sandberg. The ensemble is the school’s top vocal group and is comprised mainly of seniors. According to director Neil Dahlstrom, “The students are chosen for their outstanding abilities in voice and musicianship.” The group rehearsed every day and performed for civic organizations and clubs. They also took part in choral concerts, some singing with Sentinel's top vocal group, the Spartanaires. The group took a few trips and travelled to Helena December 8 for their annual concert at the Veteran’s Hospital. Dahlstrom commented, “This year's group carries on the tradition of musical excellence that has been so well established throughout the years. Some of the most beautiful voices in the school are in this group.” Chevaliers Soloist Jacque May sings at Chevies' first performance. Chevaliers-Front Row: Toni Privett. Tammy Elser, Jacque May. The students must submit an appli- cation and have a personal interview' with the Grafs to be accepted. Students who apply should be enrolled in a foreign lan- guage or plan to take one if accepted. The countries that the group visits pri- marily speak German and French so the students who speak these languages are given preference over students who don’t. The students raised money for tips, tours, transportation and motel fees by selling wood and stationery. This year’s Orchestra played a variety of music from Baroque to contemporary and from heavy to light pop. They raised money by holding bake sales and selling magazines and fruit. They made a trip to Billings for the All State Orchestra Festival. The ensembles consist of all the string players who wish to play, and selected woodwind, brass and percussion players from the band. The Orchestra performed numerous times. They performed at the annual Christmas assembly and also took part in Hell- gate’s musical in mid-February. They gave a concert with the grade school orchestra which included Missoula string play- ers of all ages. Karen Parry rehearses with other violinists. The Marching Knights parade down Colorado Boulevard. A tour of Disneyland, a trip to the beach and a cruise in New Port Bay were a few of the highlights of the Marching Knights Rose Bowl trip. The Band sub- mitted an audition tape in the spring of 1977 and was accepted as Montana's Rose Bowl Band. To raise money for the trip, band members sold fruit and magazines and several business donated money. The Band practiced ever day during school and spent their Saturday mornings marching through Missoula streets. The Band left for California December 28 and arrived there December 30. A stop at Las Vegas on the trip down and once again on the way home gave the Band a chance to see the casinos and luxury hotels of the town. The Band headed for the parade line-up at 5 a.m. and began their 5Vi mile march at 8 a.m. The Band spent most of its time on the bus, playing games, talking and sleeping. They reluctantly returned January 5, tired, but very happy. Stepping high, Rory Krout leads the Band. Marching Knights 123 Pep Band A glance at the Pep Band’s itinerary proves that it is Hellgate’s busiest band. Besides playing at football games, wrestling matches, basket- ball games, school assemblies and tournaments, the Band also greeted Bob Hope at the Missoula airport and rallied the freshman during the Freshman Convention. The main purposes of the Band, raising spirit and keeping it high, are accomplished by playing pop tunes, peppy music, the school song and through the enthusiasm of the members. The Band can be heard rehearsing before games and matches, and during the odd times their crammed schedule allows. Freshman Band Freshman Band is where it all be- gins. In future years, the hard work, effort and talent produced in the First-year Band will be channeled into the Concert, Marching, Pep and Jazz Bands. The Band re- hearses every day and participates in concerts with the other bands throughout the year. For some stu- dents, Freshman Band is their first introduction to brass and percussion instrumentation. This class gives them a chance to experiment with different instruments before choos- ing a specific one. The Band does not take trips as the other bands do, but in the spring they give concerts during a “Mini-Tour” of Missoula grade schools. 124 Pep Band, Freshman Band PEP BAND-Front Row: Todd Hess, Carl Rising, Paul Krout, Brad Elison, Warren Sheldon, John-Rose. Mr. Dan Delaney (Asst. Supt.) very ably filled in during Mr. Zellick’s convalescence. Happily Mr. Zellick was able to return to the district in January. Mr. George Zellick Superintendant School Board The school board was faced with a dilemma this year as a result of action by the State Department of Education. OSPI denied continuance of variances obtained by MCHS and decreed that we must meet state standards by next year or lose accreditation. The MCHS school board had to deal with the question of what to do with 1000 students too many for existing facilities. Various obtions were discussed with double shifting next year a certainty.
